Jazz great Arturo Sandoval to play The Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg FL June 23, 2017

"It's so important to listen to music,
to listen again and again.
Eat, sleep and drink music."
 - Arturo Sandoval

Arturo Sandoval and his band will perform at 8 p.m. Friday, June 23, 2017 at the Duke Energy Center for the Arts - Mahaffey Theater.

A 10-time Grammy winner, Sandoval was a protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie. He received an Emmy Award in 2006. In 2013, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.

Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town on the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American Jazz. Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of 12, but it didn’t take him long to catch the excitement of the jazz world. He has since evolved into one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugelhorn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer.

Sandoval was a founding member of the Grammy-winning group Irakere, whose explosive mixture of jazz, classical, rock and traditional Cuban music caused a sensation throughout the entertainment world. In 1981, he left Irakere to form his own band, which garnered enthusiastic praise from critics and audiences all over the world, and continues to do so.

Tickets, $39, 49, $59 and $69, are now on sale. Bill Edwards Foundation for the Arts members can purchase tickets today at noon. Tickets may be purchased online at TheMahaffey.com, or charge by phone at 727.893.7832.

RECORDING ARTIST DANA FUCHS WRAPS UP THE BLUES ON THE SQUARE SERIES

Powerhouse International Blues Star to
Close Series this Weekend in Delray Beach!

Staturday, June 17, 2017 ~ 7:30-10p,
$15-GA/$50-VIP
 TICKETS

Florida born, now NYC resident, Dana Fuchs is a phenomenon, a singer, songwriter, musician, whose mesmerizing voice and presence, has led critics to compare her to Rock Legends from Janis to Jagger. Fittingly, she appeared in the off-Broadway production “Love, Janis.” The multi-talented singer songwriter stars in one of the most talked-about cult films, “Across The Universe,” where she has a major presence both in the film, and on the soundtrack. Perhaps Stereophile Magazine said it best, “Imagine a sultry, more emotive Janis Joplin, backed by a higher energy version of the late 60s Rolling Stones… Rock n’ Roll doesn’t get any better.” Dana is currently on a world tour in support of her highly acclaimed new CD “Broken Down Acoustic Sessions”.

Inevitable comparisons are made to Janis Joplin, in part because Fuchs played her quite well on stage near the beginning of her career.  She has that kind of charisma, and she has that smoky sadness simmering near the surface.  She also wears her heart on her sleeve, and makes no secret about the pain and loss she’s experienced. In fact, she shares it on stage and off.  She writes incredibly impactful songs about battles won and lost, friends and family gone too soon, and love lost just before it was realized.  For more visit http://www.danafuchs.com .

South Motors Jazz at Pinecrest Gardens 2017 -2018

We are opening in October with one of the greatest female jazz voices around, 10 time Grammy Award Winner and 17 time Grammy Nominee, Janice Siegel (founding member of Manhattan Transfer) but in addition to her long time relationship with Manhattan Transfer, she has had an outstanding solo career of her own that includes 10 solo albums. Her show is titled Ella + Gershwin = LOVE, and you guessed it, the program, a tribute to the great Ella Fitzgerald, showcasing much of the beloved Gershwin songbook along with other great jazz standards. Joining her on stage will be the South Florida Jazz Orchestra who will be performing one of the most outstanding renditions of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, a Grammy Award Winning arrangement of Gershwin’s orchestral masterpiece transposed for big band by Gordon Goodwin.

In November we are presenting for the first time on the Banyan Bowl stage, Latin Grammy Award Winner and Grammy Award Nominee Nestor Torres, hailed as one of the best jazz flautists on the world stage today. Renowned for his broad and varied repertoire and stunning technique, this jazz artist will mesmerize you with the ethereal sounds of his instrument and his amazing musicality.

In December we are featuring Grammy Award Winning jazz trumpeter, Brian Lynch. For those of you who were in our audience when Branford Marsalis performed, if you recall, Branford called Brian on stage to join him in one of the songs they performed that evening. Brian is a world class, internationally renowned jazz musician, and destined to give a performance you will long remember.

January we welcome the World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra. This is a night of great Big Band Jazz that needs no further explanation. Their name, and their DNA speaks for itself.

February will feature National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master, and the “father of them all”, the great Ellis Marsalis Jr. and the Ellis Marsalis Trio bringing you the very best of New Orleans Jazz.

March welcomes back the man considered to be the greatest percussionist in the world today, Miami’s own Sammy Figueroa who is bringing with him all the way from Rio one of Brazil’s premier jazz vocalists, Glacuia Nasser. Not so very long ago they recorded a critically acclaimed album together called “Talisman” that infuses the sultry Samba and Bossa Nova sounds together with percussive Latin rhythms. This will be one of the most memorable nights of Brazilian influenced jazz you will ever experience.

Finally we come to April – when South Motors Jazz will present a group of performers that have sold more than 10 million records in their decades of writing and performing the most delicious music that I’m sure most of you are very familiar with, Spyro Gyra. Saxophonist Jerry Beckenstein is still revered as one of the premier jazz artists and Sax Masters, and in a career that spans generations, they are today, sounding and performing better than ever.
Outside food, beverage or alcohol is not permitted.
Children not admitted without a guardian.
Event programming subject to change.
