High Energy Norman Jackson Band to Play High Dive in Gainesville on Debut Florida Tour

WHEN THE NIGHT CALLS FOR
SWINGIN', BUMPIN',
GOOD TIMIN' BLUES,
CALL ON NORMAN!

The Norman Jackson Band, 3rd Place finishers at the 2016 International Blues Challenge, will be making their first trip to
Gainesville to play at the High Dive, courtesy of the
North CentralFlorida Blues Society.

The band is led by Norman Jackson, who was born in Canton, Ohio, but raised in Detroit and the south side of Chicago. They are a truly original and unique act that promises to not just play the finest and most genuine Blues you’ll ever hear but also transcend what a “band” does by thoroughly entertaining the audience. Norman’s true and entertaining storytelling is paired by his young apprentice and high-flying saxophonist Rick Shortt’s energy and showmanship.

Norman has sung with the Chi-Lites, George Clinton, and many famous blues, gospel and soul acts. Norman has lived the blues and says, “By the time I’m done singing about me, you’ll leave here feeling good!” Years of struggle with addiction and life’s challenges penned his long and winding journey. The band promises to make you "Get Your Happy On" with their virtuoso musicianship and smile-inducing showmanship.

Florida jazz society awards scholarships to budding musicians in St. Augustine

The St. Augustine Jazz Society presented $6,000 in scholarships to jazz music students at its May 2017 Jazz Jam.

A scholarship for $1,500 was presented to Matthew Falgowski, who recently graduated from the music program at the University of North Florida (UNF). In the fall, Falgowski will attend Indiana State University Jacobs School of Music in pursuit of a master’s degree.

Falgowski has shown great dedication to his music career through the years, in addition to bringing music to the community. He has been involved with the UNF music camp for underprivileged music students during the summer and has received many music awards for his outstanding achievements.

Rhys Bennett, who recently graduated from St. Augustine High School, received a scholarship for $2,500. Bennett has received many awards for his musical expertise and had been an important part of the jazz society family throughout his high school years.

Bennett will continue his music career at Florida State University in Tallahassee.

Henry Van Boskirk, a freshman at Creekside High School, received a scholarship for $485. Henry was chosen Florida Allstate middle school jazz pianist in 2016. He will attend the UNF Band Camp.

Henry’s sister, Sylvia, will also receive a scholarship for $485 to attend UNF Band Camp. Sylvia will be a senior at Creekside High School this year.

Both have performed at the Jazz Society monthly jams.

The scholarships were presented by St. Augustine Jazz Society President Joe Robertson.

For the past 26 years, the jazz society has assisted budding musicians in St. Johns County.

Jazz artists Pederson and Gasior perform at SMDCAC on July 14, 2017

Two of Miami's Favorites in
One of Their Favorite Rooms
TICKETS

SouthMiami-Dade Cultural Arts Center presents Wendy Pedersen and Jim Gasior as part of the Cabaret Series on Friday, July 14 at 8:30pm. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 on day of show. SMDCAC is located at 10950 SW 211 Street in Cutler Bay. For tickets the public should call 786-573-5300 and for information visit www.smdcac.org.

Two of South Florida’s most enduring and favorite performers, vocalist Wendy Pedersen and pianist Jim Gasior, present an evening of jazz. Enjoy music from their album We Two, offering new interpretations of Rodgers & Hammerstein, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, the Gershwin brothers and brand new arrangements.

About Wendy and Jim
Wendy Pedersen and Jim Gasior have been enduring personalities in the South Florida music scene, each widely known for their passionate commitment to a notable breadth of musical projects, both live and in the studio.

Collectively, they have performed and/or recorded with Ricky Martin, Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Alejandro Sanz, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Ariana Grande, Michael Bolton, Natalie Cole, Patti Austin, Smokey Robinson, James Brown, Little Richard, Arturo Sandoval, Benny Golson, Freddie Hubbard, Robin Eubanks, and countless others. As a duo they are dedicated to a deep respect for the Great American Songbook - with fresh arrangements and performances filled with freedom and joy. Their first recording, We Two, was released in March of 2016.

The songs for We Two were selected for their enduring significance and the creative malleability that they offer. The listener will at once sense their heartfelt appreciation for these well-loved standards. In addition, their partnership embodies all of the spontaneity, intimate communication and fun of a jazz performance. The playfulness of “It Ain’t Necessarily So”, the gospel-tinged “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning”, the lonely heartbreak of “Round Midnight”, and the clever spin on “My Favorite Things” in 11/8 meter are just a few of the personal and emotive interpretations by the duo.

The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center is managed by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, with funding support from the Office of the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.  The Center is dedicated to presenting and supporting arts and culture and providing access to the arts to the entire Miami-Dade County community.

It is the policy of Miami-Dade County to comply with all of the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.  The facility is accessible and assistive listening devices are available in the Main Stage Auditorium and the Black Box Theater space. To request materials in accessible format, and/or any accommodation to attend an event at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, please contact Stephanie Aponte, 786-573-5314, saponte@miamidade.gov, at least five days in advance to initiate your request.
