2012 Blues Blast Music Awards Results Announced

In May of this year 30 Blues music industry professionals nominated their choices in the fifth annual Blues Blast Music Awards. The Blues Blast Music Awards honor the years best in Blues music in eight categories. Voting began on July 1st and continued until August 31st. Voting was open to the public and more than 5,000 Blues fans from all over the world voted in this years awards.

Maurice John Vaughn is classic Good Times Blues from Chicago. He and his band are featured in the movie V.I. Warshawski with Kathleen Turner. His music was also a big part of the Charlie Sheen movie, Major League II with the hit "Everything I Do, Got To Be Funky" and other tunes on the soundtrack. Maurice is a triple threat on Sax, Guitar & Vocals. Turning his attention to the guitar, he caught the ear of Phil Guy and in 1979 went on tour with Phil and then with Luther Allison, Son Seals and A.C. Reed. In 1986 he released his self produced CD "Generic Blues Album" that was later picked up by Alligator Records and declared "Blues Album of the Year!" by Guitar World magazine.

DILLARD JAZZ BAND INVITED TO PERFORM AT INTERNATIONAL BAND CONFERENCE

Fort Lauderdale, Florida - The recognition, accolades and invitations continue for the award-winning Dillard Center for the Arts Jazz Ensemble.

On the heels of winning their 2nd national title at the 2012 Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition, Dillard Jazz has been extended a personal invitation by Wynton Marsalis to perform as his demonstration band at the prestigious Midwest Clinic, an International Band and Orchestra Conference.  Marsalis is the world renowned artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, and will be a keynote speaker at the conference in Chicago December 19-22, 2012.

For the Dillard Center for the Arts, it is a unique opportunity to perform among legends in the educational and professional worlds. However, the young performers now face perhaps their biggest challenge: raising the $24,000 needed to make the Chicago trip a possibility for the 26 students in the jazz ensemble.
 
This year’s clinic not only features Marsalis but also internationally acclaimed American conductor Leonard Slatkin.  This important event gathers instrumental music educators, students, composers and conductors from all 50 states and more than 30 nations.
 
“It’s a great honor for our band to be chosen to perform at the Midwest Clinic,’’ said Dillard Jazz Musical Director Christopher Dorsey. “I know band directors who have spent their whole lives trying to get their bands to Midwest, so being invited to perform is an amazing opportunity. I sure hope our kids get to go.”

schedule change - Al makes up his mind, regardless...

There are times when a glitch in scheduling can cause infinite harm. Other times it only hurts for a little while. On with the tale. Flo is back in the Apple helping the Archbishop get things ready for a big bash, so, I am back to "baching" it. I can cook, so meals are not a problem. Scheduling is!! My days get mixed up. Fortunately I can still tell time. Nicole Henry was to appear at Upstairs at the Van Dyke last night. My almost "bachelor" buddy, Bill, and I planned to be there. Late afternoon Nicole sent notice that she wasn't feeling well and Wendy Pederson would take her place. Our plans would change and then change again. Does that sound girlish to you? Any way the plan changes hurt, until Wendy showed up with her fantastic set of "pipes". She opened the first set with a Billy Holiday tune, "Fun Out of Life". It is one of my favorites. Wendy went on to do a whole set of Lady Day's songs. She interprets them in her own style and it is a delight to listen to. On the stand with Wendy were James McCoy (bass), Pete Wallace (piano), Aaron Lebos (guitar) and newcomer Arvel Nagundi (drums) Their individual solos had us doing the proverbial tappin' and clappin'. Wendy opened the second set with "Love For Sale". As a kid I had the good fortune to work in a band that had a season-long gig at a joint called the "Pump Room". It was on Washington and Seventh. Yes, there were hookers "doin' the stroll" on Washington back in 1947. During that stint we must have played "Love" 4 or 5 times every night. 6 nights a week, for 21 weeks. You do the math. Whenever I can't fall asleep, I run through the chord changes of that song and never get past the first chorus. Wendy and the band did it much better than the "Bot Allen Five". Enjoyed the evening as I usually do when Wendy sings. All the guys in the band did great but I would be remiss if I didn't give special mention to Pete Wallace(piano). I don't know what it is with Wendy, but she seems to inspire pianists. i.e. Jim Gasior and others. Is there something about "redheads"? Flo is one too!!!!!! Sunday is the IBC up at B.B. Kings in West Palm. If you plan to go, make plans for an early start as the President will be making a speech at the same time. Tough choice to make.  Hmmmmm---- wonder what to do. Obama or the BLUES. The BLUES or Obama--------no, it is not a tough choice, for me, at all.

P.S. staying political for a moment. At an adjoining table, last night at the Van Dyke, two young women, Maria & Diana noticed two small oil portraits on a wall opposite the end of the bar. One was of Fidel the other MaoTseTung. Maria, a Latina JAZZophile was so upset by the display that she found it difficult to concentrate on Wendy's performance. It is management’s choice to take any political stance they like. Is it a wise one?

Double Grammy Nominees Sammy Figueroa and his Latin Jazz Explosion shall be celebrating their 10^th anniversary with three concerts in New York and South Florida.

It was a little over ten years ago that the legendary percussionist Sammy Figueroa (Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Brecker Brothers, Mariah Carey, David Bowie and countless others) arrived in South Florida from New York.  There he found a vibrant Latin jazz scene, bursting with creativity, as players from Cuba, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Haiti, Colombia and Argentina created a simmering mix of multi-cultural jazz collaboration.  In addition, the University of Miami’s David Frost School of Music, a magnet for virtuosos, added to the strong collaborative environment.  With the support of South Florida Jazz and the Van Dyke Café in South Beach Sammy put together a band of the best players in town and came bursting out of the gate with a concert debut at the Hollywood Jazz Festival in November 2011.

Ten years later, Sammy and the band have released three critically acclaimed albums (two of which have received Grammy Nominations), toured throughout the world and developed a fan base of thousands.   Although the personnel has changed (former members include Irakere saxophonist Carlos Averhoff, Michael and Nicky Orta on piano and bass, respectively, trumpeter John Lovell of the Jimmy Buffet band and founding member drummer Goetz Kujack,) the sound of this band has remained remarkably consistent, featuring an impressive mixture of swirling Latin rhythms with fusion jazz. Their performances invariably invoke encores and standing ovations. 

Current members of the Explosion include Venezuelans Silvano Monasterios on piano, bassist Gabriel Vivas, both of whom have contributed compositions and arrangements that have enhanced and focused the musical identity of the group.  Puerto Rican drummer Nomar Negroni has a sound like no other, effortlessly integrating Latin rhythms of all sorts into a jazz context.  Horn players include Australian Troy Roberts on sax and master trumpet-player Alex Pope Norris, both of whom Sammy encountered while they were doing graduate studies at the University of Miami.

The celebration begins on Monday September 10^, 2012 at New York’s Blue Note and continues at WDNA’s Jazz Gallery in Miami Saturday, September 15, 2012 (Sammy is also the host of WDNA’s popular ‘Sammy Figueroa Show’ every Monday at 11 AM).  This concert is part of WDNA’s Fine Arts Series and will feature the photography of Robert Rodriguez, an outstanding Nuyorican photographer who has been documenting Sammy and the band for several years.  The third concert is at the Arts Garage in Delray Beach on Saturday, September 22, 2012.
