South Florida JAZZ Releases 2012-13 Season
Highlighted by Gonzalo Rubalcaba Opening
South Florida JAZZ, in its 21st year, as the principal purveyors of modern jazz in the region since 1991, formally announces its new season schedule. All performances will be held at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr Blvd on the Nova Southeastern University campus in Davie. The focus of the organization remains steadfastly on presenting artists of national and international repute under the aegis of Artistic Director Ron Weber and gently guided by the world-acclaimed vibraphonist/educator Gary Burton, Artistic Advisor, who believe this lineup is potentially the strongest in the organization’s history.

November 24, 2012 – 21st Anniversary Celebration and Concert
Gonzalo Rubalcaba Trio
The conservatory-trained master pianist has integrated huge swaths of the European classical and jazz traditions, while maintaining deep ties to the rhythmic currents of his Cuban homeland. Initially coming to international prominence under the aegis of bassist Charlie Haden, with whom he recorded extensively, Gonzalo Rubalcaba has now earned 15 Grammy nominations, winning two Grammys and two Latin Grammys. At first, Mr. Rubalcaba distinguished himself primarily with his virtuoso technique and rhythmic prowess. With maturity, he has become a more introspective composer and improviser, while continuing to dazzle audiences as he explores the rich history of Cuban music.

Stanley Jordan Trio
Stanley Jordan is the most gifted guitarists of his generation, renowned as the uncontested master of the spectacular two-handed tap technique that allows him to play rhythm and melody simultaneously. Stanley Jordan is, however, much more than a technical phenomenon. His interpretations – from Bach to Bird to the Beatles - are true masterpieces. But the strength and depth of his multi-faceted music stem from his belief in the power of his art. For Stanley, making music has always been more than just entertainment; it is a genuine restorative journey, which will inspire and heal the soul, in the immediate and utterly therapeutic sense of the word.
February 9, 2013 – 8:00 PM3 Cohens (Anat, Avishai and Yuval) Sextet
The best jazz groups are made up of kindred spirits, but the rare family band has something more — an intuitive feel for one other that goes beyond words and gestures to a kind of genetic telepathy. The 3 Cohens are that sort of uncommon collective, a trio of siblings from Tel Aviv, Israel — tenor saxophonist/clarinetist Anat Cohen, trumpeter Avishai Cohen and soprano saxophonist Yuval Cohen — whose sense of jazz history and improvisational interplay is both uncannily fluent and wonderfully, infectiously warm. Even with the soaring individual careers each of the Cohens is achieving, there is something special about the music the three make together.

Fred Hersch Trio
A superior soloist, accompanist and interpreter of ballads, Fred Hersch began to play the piano at age four and composed and improvised by seven. Following graduation from the New England Conservatory in 1977, the Cincinnati native moved to New York and worked as a sideman with the likes of Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Jane Ira Bloom and formed a long-term working relationship with Janis Siegel, while also leading his own groups. He has been amazingly prolific and largely unsung creator of beautiful compositions and reconstructions. His live solo album Alone at the Vanguard received two Grammy nominations in 2011.

John Scofield’s Hollow Body Band
It is helpful to understand that “hollow body” refers to a guitar construction! The band features two guitarists - the other being the redoubtable Mike Stern - who were Gary Burton protégés and also played in 1980s iterations of the Miles Davis band, giving both bona fide fusion credentials. Scofield, or “Sco,” as he is universally known, has influenced jazz since the late 70’s and is still going strong. Sco is a masterful jazz improviser whose music generally falls somewhere between post- bop jazz, funk-edged electronica, and even R & B. He is comfortable in several idioms and blurs the lines at will creating a distinctive musical style and personality.

Tom Harrell Quintet
A supreme trumpeter and flugelhornist, Tom Harrell creates a seemingly endless flow of bubbling, intricate ideas conveyed with an almost serene delivery. Neither aggressively avant-garde, nor riveted in the past, Tom Harrell’s music simply celebrates sonic beauty for its own sake. Praised for his pure melodic brilliance, he is widely recognized as one of the most creative and uncompromising jazz instrumentalists and composers of our time. For over four decades, close to 300 recordings, and numerous accolades, Tom manages to stay fresh. His quintet has shown remarkable continuity and cohesion. It is a great band.

Kurt Elling
There are no obvious parallels in the music industry. Chicago native Kurt Elling is the greatest male jazz singer – or just jazz singer – of our time. In a career spanning 16 years, Elling has risen to international prominence as a jazz artist and creative singer. An intellectual superman, he is a master of “vocalese” and scatting. Remarkably, each of his nine albums was nominated for a Grammy® Award and Dedicated to You won in 2010. He is a perennial critics poll-winner and his quartet tours the world, performing to critical acclaim in Europe, Asia, Canada, Israel, and Australia. This will be Mr. Elling’s fifth performance for South Florida JAZZ.
