Hamilton de Holanda

The Faena Jazz Series presents five-time Latin Grammy winner Hamilton de Holanda, Brazil’s internationally recognized master of the bandolim (Brazilian mandolin), on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.

Known for blending jazz, choro, samba, and MPB traditions into a contemporary improvisational style, Hamilton de Holanda has become one of Brazil’s most influential modern instrumental artists. Wynton Marsalis has referred to him as a “national treasure.”

Recognized for his technical mastery and innovation, Holanda expanded the traditional 8-string bandolim by adding two additional strings, creating a broader tonal range and helping bring the instrument into contemporary jazz and world music settings.

His collaborations have included artists such as Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Pedrito Martinez, Diogo Nogueira, Jorge Glem, and João Bosco.

Appearing with Hamilton are two leading contemporary Brazilian musicians. Keyboardist Salomão Soares has performed with Hermeto Pascoal, Leny Andrade, and Vanessa Moreno, while drummer Thiago “Big” Rabello is a Latin Grammy-winning drummer, producer, and educator who has presented master classes at Berklee College of Music.

OKAN

Taking its name from the word for “heart” or “soul” in Lukumí, OKAN is an Afro-Cuban duo blending jazz, folk, classical, and global musical traditions while exploring themes of immigration, identity, and cultural heritage.

Elizabeth Rodriguez is a classically trained violinist, and Magdelys Savigne is a percussionist from Santiago de Cuba. The duo formed in 2017 after performing with Jane Bunnett’s all-female Cuban jazz ensemble Maqueque.

Since forming, OKAN has released three albums, received two Juno Awards, appeared on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series, and performed throughout North America. In 2024, the group relocated to South Florida after several years based in Toronto.
