Jazz trumpet sensation Arturo Sandoval returns to Casselberry on Sept. 21, 2024, to perform at the FREE Latin Jazz & Art Festival at Lake Concord Park located at 95 Triplet Lake Drive in Casselberry. Sponsored by the City of Casselberry and WUCF, this concert event from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. will entice all jazz lovers to come and enjoy a spectacular evening highlighted by the award-winning trumpeter, who previously appeared here in 2017.

Sandoval began playing trumpet with street musicians as a 12-year-old boy in Cuba. In 1989, after touring with his friend and mentor, Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval was invited by Gillespie to be a part of the United Nations Orchestra. During a tour with this group, Sandoval visited the American Embassy in Rome to defect from Cuba. He became an American citizen on December 7, 1998, and was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.

Sandoval's song "A Mis Abuelos" received Grammy Award nominations for Best Instrumental Composition and Best Arrangement. This composition was featured on his Grammy-winning album, Danzon. Other highlights from Sandoval's discography featuring his compositions include Dear Diz (Every Day I Think of You), Live at the Blue Note, Rumba Palace (Grammy 2007), and Hot House (Grammy 1998).

His life was the subject of the film For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story, starring Andy García. Sandoval has won 10 Grammy Awards and been nominated 19 times; he has also received six Billboard Awards and one Emmy Award.

Opening the night is the Rumba Brothers, the brilliant guitar combo of Luis Alfredo and Jose Velez. They’ve performed many times in Casselberry and are always a fan favorite.

Prior to the concert, some of the area’s greatest Latin visual artists will showcase their works in the Latin art exhibit titled “Conexion” (Connection).  Everything from paintings and sculptures to mixed media masterpieces will be on display in Casselberry City Hall and the Casselberry Art House from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Sponsored by WUCF, the Latin Jazz & Art Festival celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with lots of colorful pageantry and excitement.

Bring blankets, chairs and lots of friends and enjoy spectacular concerts on the lakefront!
