JACK WILKINS, longtime Jazz Studies Director at USF, will be joined by trumpeter JAMES SUGGS and the Bay Area trio LA LUCHA for the event, which is part of the HCC Visual & Performing Arts series.
Admired for decades for his broad sound, conversational solos, and charismatic stage presence, Dexter Gordon made a big impact in the jazz world. In 1976, his return to the U.S. after many years in Europe drew great attention and helped revitalize interest in straight-ahead jazz. Many honors and awards followed his homecoming, and a decade later Gordon was nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars, for his performance in Bertrand Tavernier’s film ‘Round Midnight.’
JACK WILKINS, a 30-year veteran of USF’s faculty, has led the USF Jazz Ensembles to great prestige and many international tours. He was appointed five yeas ago as a Fulbright Scholar to the University of Calgary, and has recorded six albums as a leader, in addition to being a featured soloist in Chuck Owen’s Jazz Surge Orchestra since it’s inception more than 25 years ago. Jack is a lifelong devotee of Dexter Gordon’s music, and he and the band are looking forward to celebrating that long and storied career – including such Dexter classics as ‘Cheesecake’ and ‘Fried Bananas’ – with the Mainstage Theatre audience.
