When I went to the Juke Joint Festival in Clarksdale, Mississippi last month among the many musicians I had on my list, Ghalia was near the top. I did see here perfom and was duly impressed with the live version of what I had only heard before. Last night found her at the top of the list for my Thursday night out in New Orleans , LA in the FrenchQuarter NewOrleans at d.b.a. New Orleans. This time with a full band backing (Phil Breen on keys, Colin Davis on drums and Dean Zucchero on bass - all of which are top first-call players here and you will probably hear more about over the next two weeks) and better sound than the street show in Clarksdale, which is to be expected and understood. A few covers, and most originals that spanned a range of blues into a bit of blues rock but all seemed solidily grounded with a hill country beat/essence. Take it as you will, and dance to it as you like...

So, walking by the front window booths I see a pretty lady and am thinking to myself "I know her I think" and sure enough, it is Colleen and James Nagel (The Blues Hound who hosts Howlin' the Blues on www.kpft.org every Sunday from 2-5 pm (CDT) ) from over Houston TX way out on the town celebrating their 45th anniversary! If you don't these nice people yet, introduce yourself by tuning into Texas' best blues radio/streaming program and check out his artwork! At the band break I took a walk (a very short one!) down the block and got invited into Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro by the hostess for the closing numbers by Oscar Rossignoli Quartet featuring Herlin Riley (Oscar Rossignoli - piano, Ricardo Pascal - saxophones, Max Moran - bass, Herlin Riley - drums and superb horn player who I didn't get the name of... sorry!). Superb! Hirlan Riley is now checked off that list I came to town with! No pictures or vid allowed, so I'll leave it to your imagination. Went back to d.b.a. and was the last one out the door except the staff and Ghalia and her roadie crew (ha!).

My fav 24 hour restaurant is now a 16 hour restaurant, so I selected a new destination for breakfast on the way home and found one that advertised "the only thing worse than our food is our service" and they were right. I waited over 20 minutes (while two parties that came in after me had orders taken and were served) and no one had even reconginized my exisitence. So I left. And so I'm not telling you the name or location, because I have forgotten it already. For good. Here's some pics. Vids are still loading. When Ghalia comes to your town, get out and check her out. Very together. Very real. Very practiced. This ain’t no game for her and this band. Meets every qualification of being real music, by real people, in a real place. And they still love what they do.

  1. Thinking about abandoning FB and moving to this platform and layout for posting my music experiences. What do YOU think?
