The origins of jazz are deeply rooted in the culture of African Americans. Thanks to a grant from FAB! - Funding Arts Broward and Broward County, the Gold Coast Jazz Society is bringing this free jazz community outreach concert to Pompano Beach featuring members of the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band and Music Director Martin Hand. The concert will feature jazz standards and music from the Great American Songbook.

Join the City of Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Department’s celebration of Black History Month, as journalist, author, oral historian, media producer and professional singer Kitty Oliver, Ph.D. presents An Evening of Jazz and Multicolored Memories. This cabaret performance of inspirational jazz vocals will also feature inspiring stories.

The program draws on poignant, humorous and revealing reflections about race in a hopeful, healing way. This innovative “Race and Change” program has family-friendly appeal to audiences across races, ethnicities, cultures and generations using music and storytelling to relate history to the present and unite everyone in an evening of entertainment and learning!

About Dr. Kitty Oliver
Dr. Kitty Oliver is an author, oral historian, media producer and professional singer with a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing and a Ph.D. focusing on race and ethnic communication. The native Floridian and former university professor is founder of the “Race and Change” historical archive of cross-cultural race and ethnic relations oral histories, the only one of its size and scope in the country, Her sought-after insights and research have been featured in books, public television and webcast radio productions, on CNN, and, most recently, in a standout interview for the Ron Howard Beatles documentary Eight Days a Night-The Touring Years. This in-demand artist also has a CD of original inspirational jazz music and weaves music, media and storytelling into her innovative, creative, uplifting programs on race and ethnic relations designed to bridge audiences across cultures and generations.

Join your jazz friends for a new kind of combo! A Taste of Jazz at Bailey Contemporary Arts will feature entertaining and educational encounters with the musical genre, accompanied by wine tastings. The introduction to jazz series will showcase the musicians of the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band, under the direction of Martin Hand.  The next session will take place from 7-8:30 pm on Thursday, February 13, 2020. The session has moved to the second Thursday of each month.  TICKETS $10-$20 per event. For more information www.baileyarts.org.

“A Taste of Jazz is a fun way to learn more about the celebrated musical genre without feeling intimidated or overwhelmed,” said Jody Leshinsky, Cultural Venues Programming Manager. “So many people want to learn more about this original American art form but do not know where to begin. We created this event series for them! And by adding wine tastings from local vendors, it has truly become a fun-filled social event.”
