Tampa Jazz Club Presents Two Great Shows in 8 Days! Nate Najar & John Lamb, and John Clayton

Presenting International
Touring Talent!
Nate Najar and John Lamb in Concert

Sunday, November 5, 2017 ~ 3pm
The Tampa Jazz Club is proud to present a Sunday
afternoon concert by an exceptional duo, guitarist NATE
NAJAR and bassist JOHN LAMB, on November 5, at 3:00 PM,
at HCC/Ybor City’s Mainstage Theatre. In countless
performances over more than a decade, Nate and John
have developed a magical chemistry together.  It’s a
musical bond that is especially evident in an intimate duet
setting such as this concert, which is part of HCC’s Visual &
Performing Arts Series.

Nate Najar – whose trio has just been voted Best Jazz
Ensemble in Creative Loafing’s Best of the Bay Readers
Poll – has gained a dedicated following with his distinctive
sound. A fingerstyle guitarist, Nate plays the acoustic
classical guitar in the jazz tradition, incorporating Brazilian
bossa nova, swing, and blues, along with classical and jazz
standards. He has recorded extensively and toured widely
– in fact, Nate will be headlining in Australia a few weeks
after the Ybor City concert. Bay Area audiences are familiar
with Nate’s annual Holiday Concert, a tradition at The
Palladium for a dozen years. His next CD is a Christmas-
themed disc, with the band including John Lamb, and will
be available at the November 5 concert.

John Lamb, with a big, soulful bass sound and perfect time,
a commanding stage presence, and a remarkable history in
music, is a Bay Area treasure. As Duke Ellington’s bassist in
the 1960’s, John toured the world and recorded on albums
including ‘The Far East Suite.’ And he has shared the stage
with a long list of the leading figures in music, including
during the early 1980’s, as leader of the house band at the
Tierra Verde Island Resort, backing the top jazz artists of
the day. As far back as 2004, the City of St. Petersburg
declared a ‘John Lamb Day,’ and in 2015, John received the
Jazz Club of Sarasota’s coveted ‘Satchmo’ Award.

Nate Najar and John Lamb, while a couple of generations
apart in age, share a musical vision when on stage. In this
rare duet concert, the magic of their collaboration will be
featured in the beautiful setting of the Mainstage Theatre
in historic Ybor City.

JOHN CLAYTON in Concert
A Swingin’ Affair!

Monday, November 13 ~ 7:30pm

One of the most dynamic figures in jazz, John Clayton, will appear in the Monday Night Jazz Series at the USF Concert Hall on November 13, leading the USF Jazz Ensemble in an evening of his music for jazz orchestra. Monday Night Jazz, now in its 22nd season, is a 5-concert series presented by the USF School of Music and the Tampa Jazz Club.

Along with being a premiere jazz and classical bassist, John Clayton is renowned as a composer/arranger, and for decades as a leader of the Clayton/Hamilton Jazz Orchestra and the Clayton Brothers Quintet. Before those groups began three decades ago, Clayton was bassist with the Monty Alexander Trio and the Count Basie Orchestra in his 20’s, before spending five years as principal bassist with the Amsterdam Philharmonic. The 9-time Grammy nominee has written music for Dianna Krall, Joe Williams, Paul McCartney, Queen Latifah and countless others.

One of the most in-demand jazz artists, John Clayton has in recent
weeks performed at festivals ranging from Monterey to Quebec to Johannesburg, and in September conducted an all-star tribute to Quincy Jones at the Hollywood Bowl. The concert with the Jazz Ensemble I will be a return visit for Clayton, as he was featured at the first USF Jazz Symposium, in 2006. And some will remember that he was the arranger of the unforgettable performance of the Star Spangled Banner by Whitney Houston with The Florida Orchestra at Super Bowl XXV in Tampa in 1991 – released as a single, the record went platinum!

Monday Night Jazz also includes a master class, and the opportunity for ensemble members to work closely with the guest artist. And John Clayton, in addition to his wide-ranging experience, spent more than 20 years on the faculty of USC in Los Angeles, and continues to teach worldwide. The top-flight students who make up USF's Jazz Ensemble I look forward to welcoming you to A Swingin' Affair!

Monday Night Jazz is presented by the USF Music Department and the Tampa Jazz Club, with sponsors WUSF, 89.7 and Stonewood Grill in New Tampa.
