South Florida JAZZ, the area’s premier modern jazz organization, presents the renowned New York Standards Quartet on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 7:45 PM. The concert takes place at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero Jr Blvd, Davie 33314. Tickets are $40 ($10 for students under age 25 with valid I.D.) and can be purchased from Ticketmaster either online via southfloridajazz.org or by calling 954-462-0222.

Four jazz master musicians formed the New York Standards Quartet (NYSQ) in 2006. The concept was a straightforward one: play jazz standards in a unique way. After performing a lot of original music they thought it would be liberating to play music based on conventional, standard jazz tunes that they had grown up playing. By playing jazz standards like “Confirmation” they put the focus on the playing of the tune, not so much the melody itself. These songs are blank slates with a lot of freedom and room for interpretation. NYSQ expanded the approach to include reinventions of these tunes, as well as some original compositions that have a close connection to forms and harmonies derived from more traditional standards.

The band has been touring and developing together for more than ten years, and it definitely shows in the empathetic cohesion of the players. Audiences respond well to familiar music that is fresh sounding, accessible, and hard-swinging.  This formula certainly worked for the Keith Jarrett Standards Trio!

The NYSQ features the swinging Tim Armacost (Billy Hart, Ray Drummond, Kenny Barron) on tenor and soprano saxes and flute; creative pianist David Berkman (Tom Harrell, Cecil McBee, Vanguard Orchestra); powerful and propulsive drummer Gene Jackson (Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland); and Ugonna Okegwo (Brad Mehldau, Tom Harrell, Kurt Rosenwinkel), a bassist with a huge sound and rock-solid time. This collaborative group has done extensive tours of Japan and Europe, and multiple gigs around the United States. The group has released CDs on Challenge Records (Netherlands) and D-Musica (Japan) and signed with Whirlwind Recordings in 2014. The New Straight Ahead was released to rave reviews that summer followed by Power of Ten in November of 2015 which also received widespread critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic, including a Downbeat Magazine Editor's pick.
