Miami's Sunshine Jazz Presents Brenda Alford in August and Celebrates 30 Years w/ Dr. Lonnie Smith & Lou Donaldson in October

The Sunshine Jazz Concert Series Presents

Brenda Alford
Quintet

Sunday, August 28, 2016 ~ 6-9pm

The Sunshine Jazz Concert Series continues on the fourth Sunday in August with a very special presentation by a true South Florida treasure. Respected vocalist, composer, educator, actor  and recording artist, Ms. Brenda Alford will grace the stage at Miami Shores Country Club from 6pm - 9pm. Brenda will be joined by her fabulous band featuring Antulio Mora on Piano, Paul Shewchuk on upright Bass, Jesse Jones, Jr. on Saxophone and last but not least, Lenny Steinberg on Drums!

Since meeting Ella Fitzgerald in her hometown of Baltimore in 1978, Brenda Alford has traveled along many performance avenues. Her accomplishments include recording on Blue Note with piano legend Horace Silver, performing with saxophone innovator Flip Phillips, and recording and performing a tribute with Billy Marcus to Lionel Hampton for his 90th Birthday at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. Brenda has performed with jazz greats including Pete Minger, Stanley Turrentine, Sonny Stitt, Ron Carter, Philly Jo Jones and Tommy Flanagan.

Brenda attended the Univ. of Miami as a jazz vocal performance major, and her compositions have been performed by the award-winning U of M Jazz Vocal Ensemble, directed by Larry Lapin.  Her own recordings include “Brenda Alford Live at Morgan State,” “Last Night In Baltimore,” and “My Favorite Things” - recorded live at the Old Dillard Museum with The Othello Molineaux Quartet, and she’s performed in two movies - Jon Waters’ “Hairspray” and Barry Levinson’s “Avalon”. Brenda tells us she’ll be singing songs from some of the great singers of Jazz, Blues and R&B, plus some new original compositions at the SJO’s event. We will surely be in for a treat!
