ART DECO WEEKEND
Special Cultural Performances
Saturday-Sunday, January 16-17, 2016
The Sunshine Jazz Organization is celebrating the 39th Annual ART DECO WEEKEND, presented by the Miami Design Preservation League Friday January 15th – Sunday the 17th on Miami’s South Beach from 5th to 15th Street on Ocean Drive. The festival celebrates architecture, preservation, education, history, advocacy, art, culture and entertainment. With SJO’s history as Miami’s oldest Jazz organization, we are delighted to join with the festival again this year as cultural and music sponsors promoting America’s indigenous music – JAZZ!
Saturday the 16th “ORIENTE & The SJO All Stars” will perform a second line parade starting at 7pm. The band will snake through the crowd toward the main Promenade Stage at 12th Street on the sand for a 7:45pm concert featuring Afro-Cuban jazz with Oriente and special guests Jesse Jones, Jr. on sax, Yamin Mustafa on trumpet, and Waldron Dunkley on trombone. Sunday’s presentation will feature “The JECC Bootcamp Ensemble” at 5pm on the Promenade Main stage. The excellent youth jazz group is mentored by Jazz Educators Community Coalition, and is directed by veteran jazz musician and educator Nicole Yarling.
ART DECO WEEKEND is a community festival held on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach that welcomes over 150,000 people every year with a commitment to the Miami Design Preservation League’s mission to preserve, protect & promote historic preservation in the Art Deco District and throughout South Florida through the over 85 educational events held during the 3-day festival.
The event is FREE and open to all ages. Full schedule and info at www.artdecoweekend.com/.
SJO programming is presented with support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.
