Waukesha(WI) Blues Festival - Jazz & Blues Florida on the Road

Found my way to the festival park easy enough...some 40+ years ago I camped here while in Boy Scouts, and my hometown is only about 10 miles away. And, the state's maximum security detention facility for juvenile males is just a bit south of here - but that is another story for another time...

Arrived in time to catch the end of Mojo Hand's set and the day took off on a fine note with the Billy Flynn Band which came up next. Totally the blues, and each of these three are a part of the definition. Bob Stroger on bass and vocals, Jim Schutte on the kit and Billy Flynn on the guitar and vocals. What came after them was all excellent music, and blues-related, but this set WAS the blues for the day. Thank you.

Enjoyed Josh Hoyer & The Shadowboxers set. What they put out is something that I like a lot, and like a lot of. Having just seen him last weekend up at the Blues on the Chippewa fest, it was no strain to hear him again this day. I look forward to being able to catch a club night and take in a whole show when they come down Florida way again. Festival sets for this band are just too short for me!

Good to see fellow Floridians Damon Fowler, Matt Walker and Justin Headley get people off their seats on their feet. No as many as Damon is used to seeing, but pretty darn good for Wisconsin! Damon related his Les Paul story between songs to tie-in the secondary theme of this weekend - Les Paul's 100th birthday celebration. Les is from Waukesha and he is remembered for his contributions. Damon has been playing one of his since he started at the age of fourteen... I'll leave it for Damon to tell you the story next time you see him.

Son Little brought his three-piece unit up as I was heading down the park trail to see the sunset over the beach that I haven't seen in over four decades. Sorry I missed the set, but walk, the view, and the contemplation was all good.

Rev Peyton's Big Damn Band closed the night out. Hard-working and super talented, this power trio is truly an entity unto itself, and they are proud of it. I went to the schedule on their website and it was good to see so many major festivals and venues they are getting booked into. They deserve it, and people deserve to hear what they put out. I was blown away four? years ago when I first heard them in St. Louis club. I remember moving right up to the stage to see the finger work on what was being played and it was jaw dropping. Still is, and the Rev may not make kindly to this, but still is and a bit more refined.

A well run and organized fest, to be sure. The big top would have been sufficient if rain had come, which it didn't. Easy parking, easy access off the highways. Friendly Rotarian staff, from the parking people right through to those manning the beverage sales.

Only question.... $4 for the small bag of popcorn? Come on now...
