"We don't need no stinkin' badges" & more of that LUV stuff - Al is out there letting us know!

Submitted by Al Kanovsky, 8/23/12

If you are as much a movie buff as you are a JAZZophile, you probably remember Bogart and the film "Treasure of Sierra Madre". A memorable line comes from a scene where bandits are attempting to steal the gold Bogie had found. The bandit says "We don't need no stinkin' badges". Last night Lisanne Lyons was the featured artist at Danny Burgers Showcase at BJB's. She started the set with an up tempo "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To". Lisanne displayed her amazing "scat" skills and set the tone for the rest of the evening.  Lisanne multi layered vocalizing  says plainly "We don't need no horns". Backed by Danny (drums) Brian Murphy(piano) and the very young and very talented Josh Allen (bass) they had us tappin' & clappin'. During the second set Lisanne invited one of her students at U.M. up and perform. A young woman, Kelly Garner, took the stage. Kelly is from Nashville, Tennessee. Lots of musicians are from around there but I'll bet not many like her. All I can say is WOW!!! Her rendition of "Honeysuckle Rose" belies her youth and inexperience. This gal can sing. Now a chapter in the continuing "JAZZ Love Tales". Lisannes "someone special" is of Italian heritage. He is not in the "biz" and is not musicalI think that's the first Italian I've ever heard of that doesn't think he can sing. The saga continues as I inquire of Brian Murphy how he and Donna Blue came to be a couple. Brian "We met in Nova Scotia"---pregnant pause---Me "How did you meet?"---short pause---Brian "A friend introduced us"---I realized I wasn't going to get much out of the queries and so I thanked him for the info and released him from any further embarrassment. Fortunately a few minutes later I spied Donna. I told her about my encounter with her hubby and she burst into laughter. One of the great things about Miss Donna Blue is her talent for laughter and cheerfulness. She gave me the "skinny". Yes, a friend introduced them but that's only the short of it. The long is, Brian was appearing, playing piano and singing at a club called "The Eager Beaver" in the Hotel Nova Scotia. Donna, an actress, was working in a nearby theater. She and her friends would stop by the club after their show. It was winter. More importantly winter in Nova Scotia. It gets colder than you know what in Nova Scotia in the winter. He wore a beret and she wore a red one. I don't know whether he just looked like he was warm and cuddly, but Donna set her red beret. It took a couple of tries but she finally caught his eye and it has been Donna and Brian ever since.

This coming Monday is MJC's Rent Party at The Stage. Kelly and Lisanne promised to try and be there. Don't miss the opportunity to hear them. The featured artist is Dana Paul with a Blood Sweat and Tears tribute band.
