The North Central Florida Blues Society is pleased to announce The 2011 Blues Challenge.

The NCFBS Blues Challenge will be held on Sunday, September 18th at 7:00 PM (time subject to change, due to amount of participants) At the Dirty Bar (formerly Emerald’s Lounge), located at 2441 NW 43rd St, Gainesville, FL 32606

Winners of the competition will represent NCFBS at the 2012 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN, which will be held January 31 - February 4, 2012.

There are 3 classes of competition: band, solo/duo and CD. Please make plans to attend the competition and cheer on your favorite musicians! There will be a $5 cover, with all of the proceeds going to the winning competitors.

The rules can be found below. If anyone requires clarification of any of these rules, please contact Rob Richardson at myname_isrob@yahoo.com.

The rules for the band and solo/duo competition are:
1. Groups must be from Alachua, Marion, Levy, Putnam, Gilchrist, Columbia, Union or Clay counties. The majority (>50%) of members in the group must reside in one of these counties. NCFBS wants to highlight blues musicians from the region we serve. That is why we have this rule.
2. At least one PERFORMING member of the group must be a full (non-Student, non-Honorary) NCFBS member. Managers/agents/representatives do NOT count toward the membership requirement. NCFBS feels that if you want to represent us at IBC Memphis you should be supportive of our overall goals and objectives enough to have a minimum of one active member from the performing group.
3. The entry fee for a band is $25, solo/duo $20. All fees and door receipts will be distributed to the winners to defray travel costs to Memphis using a pro-rated system based on the number of performing individuals in both categories.
4. Bands will play a 25-minute set, with 15-minute setup. Points will be deducted for going over time per the IBC official rules (see item 5).
5. A limited backline and drum set will be provided. Personal amps are not allowed. The NCFBS follows the rules for the International Blues Challenge at

www.blues.org. In particular, see "Staging and Equipment" in the Official Rules page. NCFBS will provide PA and microphones.
6. NCFBS requires the winner to compete in Memphis, thus the expectation is that if you compete and win, you will attend. NCFBS will only provide funding from the entry fees and door receipts, no other funding from NCFBS will be provided. Thus it is incumbent upon the winner that they are capable financially of attending the IBC in Memphis. Why do we have this requirement? Entries into the IBC in Memphis are becoming more limited due to the popularity of the event. The Blues Foundation (the sponsoring organization of the IBC) has indicated that if blues societies fail to send a representative, they are in danger of losing their opportunity to send entrants in future years. Thus if you win and do NOT attend you endanger future entries for NCFBS!!!
7. A competitor may compete in no more than two entries. He/she may compete in both the band competition and the solo/duo competition, or may compete in a maximum of two different bands in the band competition.
8. The IBC Memphis does not allow someone to compete in their solo/duo competition and the band competition in the same year. Because of this, in the case that a competitor wins both the solo/duo and is a member of the winning band in our 2011 Blues Challenge, they will go to Memphis as a member of the winning band, but the second place competitor in the solo/duo competition will be the official Gainesville representative in the IBC Memphis.
9. Bands considering competing should contact Rob Richardson (myname_isrob@yahoo.com, 352-871-0676). A firm schedule will be available on September 16th.
10. There will be several judges drawn from the regional music community. They will be using the same scoring criteria that will be used in Memphis, which is available at http://www.blues.org/ibc/#ref=ibc_scoring

The rules for the CD contest are:
1.The CD must be self-produced between November 1, 2010 - October 31, 2011.
2.There is a $10 entry fee for CDs.
3.Five copies of the CD must be provided to NCFBS no later than September 4th.
4.Groups must be from Alachua, Marion, Levy, Putnam, Gilchrist, Columbia, Union or Clay counties. The majority (>50%) of members in the group must reside in one of these counties. NCFBS wants to highlight blues musicians from the region we serve. That is why we have this rule.
5.At least one PERFORMING member of the group must be a full (non- Student, non-Honorary) NCFBS member. Managers/agents/representatives do NOT count toward the membership requirement. NCFBS feels that if you want to represent us at IBC Memphis you should be supportive of our overall goals and objectives enough to have a minimum of one active member from the performing group.
6.The CD judges will be the same as the band/solo/duo judges.
Judges will evaluate:
(1) Blues Content
(2) Musical Performance
(2) Audio Quality of the Presentation
(3) Cover Art and Design
(4) Credits and Liner Information.
Anyone considering competing in the CD contest competing should contact Rob Richardson,
