"Artists are mostly independent contractors with little training in business, and no local organization to represent them. Most don't make enough money to hire managers. They can find themselves out of a job on the very night they show up for work. There's no requirement for two-week's notice, severance pay, or even minimum wage. Less than 1% of recording artists recover the costs of their CDs, due to "middleman" costs and illegal reproductions of their work!

Musicians are often the first to go as restaurant profits decline. Both venues and musicians often employ electronic instrumentation instead of real musicians to save money."
