For the lovers of jazz piano, nothing beats the excitement of a tightly cohesive trio.  The Bill Charlap Trio is one of those kinds of tightly knit ensembles having played together since 1997.  On Wednesday, December 10, the Bill Charlap Trio will return to the Amaturo Theater to perform for the Gold Coast Jazz Society in an evening of jazz from the Great American Songbook.  This concert is a part of the Society’s 2014-15 jazz series and will take place at the Amaturo Theater of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW 5th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale at 7:45pm.  Single tickets are available for $45 per person.  Student and teacher tickets are $10 with valid ID.  To purchase tickets call the Broward Center AutoNation Box Office at 1-800-745-3000 (Ticketmaster) or online at www.browardcenter.org.  Pre-show music will be provided by the New River Middle School Jazz Band at 6:30pm in the lobby of the Amaturo Theater.

Charlap is considered to be one of the eminent interpreters of the Great American Songbook and one of jazz’s most accomplished improvisers. Bill began playing the piano at the tender age of three and throughout his childhood Bill was surrounded by music. His father, Moose Charlap, was a prominent Broadway composer and songwriter.   He wrote most of the music for the theatrical production of Peter Pan and had songs recorded by everyone from the Ames Brothers to jazz singer Joe Williams.  Bill’s mother, Sandy Stewart, was a jazz singer who worked with Benny Goodman, co-starred on TV’s Perry Como Show, and won a Grammy nomination for her hit single “My Coloring Book.”

Charlap joined the jazz world in the late 1980’s when he joined Gerry Mulligan’s Quintet and later assumed the piano chair in the Phil Woods Quartet.  Time magazine wrote, “Bill Charlap approaches a song the way a lover approaches his beloved…no matter how imaginative or surprising his take on a song is, he invariably zeroes in on its essence.”  In 1997, Charlap formed the Bill Charlap Trio with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington (no relation), now recognized as one of the leading groups in jazz. In 2000, he was signed to Blue Note Records and has since received two Grammy Award nominations, for Somewhere: The Songs of Leonard Bernstein and most recently The Bill Charlap Trio: Live at the Village Vanguard. In 2003 Charlap received the pianist of the year Jazz Award from the Jazz Journalists Association and was named outstanding jazz soloist by Manhattan's Night Life Awards in 2003 and 2004.  In 2009, Charlap was pianist and musical director for The Blue Note 7, an all-star jazz septet celebrating the legacy of Blue Note Records on its 70th anniversary. The septet performed a 50-city tour and released the CD, Mosaic: A Celebration of Blue Note Records.

Charlap is the artistic director of New York City’s Jazz in July Festival at the 92Y, in New York City. The year 2014 will mark his 10th anniversary as artistic director.  He has produced several concerts for Jazz at Lincoln Center and an evening of George Gershwin’s music at the Hollywood Bowl.  Charlap is married to another renowned jazz pianist, Renee Rosnes. The two artists often collaborate in a duo piano setting. In 2010 Charlap and Rosnes released Double Portrait on the Blue Note label.

Bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington will be performing with Charlap for the December 10 concert.  To learn more about the Bill Charlap Trio, go to www.billcharlap.com
