MIAMI, FL - Master trombonist and member of the famed Marsalis family, Delfeayo Marsalis appears 8 p.m., Thursday, August 13 for the final Coral Gables Congregational Church Community Arts Program 2009 Summer Concert Series event. Delfeayo takes the stage with his quintet of players (piano, trumpet, saxophone, bass, and drums) for an unforgettable evening.

Delfeayo began playing at age 13, producing his first recording at 17. He has since produced over 75 major-label recordings--several of which have received Grammy awards and nominations--including works by Harry Connick, Jr.; Marcus Roberts; Spike Lee; father, Ellis Marsalis; and brothers, Branford and Wynton Marsalis. His production skills earned a 3M Visionary Award in 1996 and a cover article for the industry source in 1997: Mix magazine.

Marsalis attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music, majoring in both performance and audio production. He was classically trained at the Eastern Music Festival and Tanglewood Institute. In 1983, Mr. Marsalis received the Outstanding Performance Award from the Jefferson Performing Arts Society for his presentation of Marcello's Sonata #6.

Mr. Marsalis has toured internationally with legendary jazz artists Art Blakey; Abdullah Ibrahim; Elvin Jones; Slide Hampton and Max Roach, as well as touring with his own modern jazz ensemble. A mainstay on the New Orleans modern jazz scene, he has released three solo albums to critical acclaim, Pontius Pilate's Decision, Musashi and Minions' Dominion. Along with late trombone master J.J. Johnson, several music reviewers have labeled Mr. Marsalis as one of the freshest modern voices on the instrument to arrive in the 90's.

Marsalis has written musical scores for television and stage and has devoted much of his time to providing musical education programs for young people. In 1993, his original D-Blues was commissioned by "Meet the Composer" for the Filmore Arts Center in Washington D.C. In 1995, Mr. Marsalis lectured in public and parochial schools on behalf of the Dallas Opera and the Bravo cable network. He has served as director of the Foundation for Artistic and Musical Excellence summer program since 1998. Mr. Marsalis founded the Uptown Music Theatre in 2000, created specifically to provide 8-12th grade youth with musical theatre training. To date, UMT has prepared over three hundred students, ages 8-18, and staged ten original musicals.

In 2004, Mr. Marsalis obtained an M.A. in jazz performance at the University of Louisville. In 2009, he implemented Uptown Music Theatre's Kidstown AfterSchool in three New Orleans grammar schools. In addition, Delfeayo will release a new album entitled Sweet Thunder, an Ellington suite based upon the literary brilliance of William Shakespeare.

Guitars Stolen in Central Florida

Someone stole three of my Taylor Guitars; a 12 string and two 6 strings. The 12 string was a model 754 CE, serial # 20051004110. I bought one of the 6 strings a month ago and it was a model 314 CE and that serial # is 20081015011. The information for the other 6 string is somewhere in my storage unit but it has a Jon Parrot sticker right under the Taylor sticker inside the guitar. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Full Moon Jazz on Hollywood Beach, Florida, on August 6, 2009 will feature very special artists Madd Jazz Quartet, Ira Sullivan and Oriente in the monthly free public performance series.

Madd Jazz Quartet includes three young siblings from the family Maddox: Kevin (17), Chase (16), and Emily (14). Each began playing piano at an early age and picked up their second instrument, alto sax, guitar, and drums respectively, about 5 years ago. Their mentors include some of South Florida's premier musicians and educators: Ira Sullivan, Brian Murphy, John Yarling, Duffy Jackson, Ed Maina, Jim Gasior, William Stewart, Richard Procopio, Eddie Balzola (Oriente) and staff of Music Tech in Pembroke Pines. The young artists also study at the Simon Salz UM Frost School of Music Young Musicians’ Summer Camp, and eldest brother Kevin will depart soon after this concert to begin studies at The University of North Florida. MIAMI, FL - Pianist Eldar Djangirov has accomplished something that the vast majority of jazz artists, pianists or otherwise, will never accomplish: he landed a contract with a major label and received a GRAMMY nomination before he could have a drink. Eldar has recorded five albums, of which, three are with Sony Classical, including the 2008 GRAMMY-nominated album for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, Re-Imagination.

A current resident of New York City, Eldar was born in 1987 to Russian parents in the former Soviet Union. He spent his first ten years in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, a province on the eastern border (of the then Soviet Union), before coming to the United States. His first performance appearance in the U.S. was at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. Marian McPartland invited Eldar to appear on her NPR Piano Jazz radio show at the age of 12. In 2001, Eldar took top prize in the jazz piano competition of the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. The following year, he won first place in the Peter Nero Piano Competition. He then released two albums independently.

In 2004, Eldar signed with Sony Classical and recorded his third album, Eldar, featuring John Patitucci and a special guest appearance from Michael Brecker. This was followed by the critically acclaimed Live at the Blue Note with guest appearances from Roy Hargrove and Chris Botti. Downbeat's four-star review states, "Few musicians on any axe swing like Eldar...his groove is intense and overwhelming. It's not the flash and fire that should stir interest in Eldar. It's what he does when the razzle-dazzle dies down and we sense substance within and beyond his pyrotechnics." The New York Times notes, "formidable technique wedded to a mature grasp of musical structure."

Eldar has appeared at many festivals including IAJE, Lionel Hampton; Jakarta Jazz Festival; SXSW; and CMJ, and has toured throughout North America, South America, Europe and Asia. He has performed at venues ranging from the Hollywood Bowl to Carnegie Hall and headlined at the most notable jazz venues in the world, including Blue Note (NY, Japan, Italy); Dizzy's; Yoshi's; and Jazz Alley. Eldar has been seen on national TV including the 2000 and 2008 GRAMMY's, Conan O'Brien, CNN, The CBS Saturday Early Show, and Jimmy Kimmel Live. Eldar appears on the 2009 Summer Concert Series with his trio of piano, jazz bass, and drums.

Unique opportunities to engage with more than 25 NEA Jazz Masters

Washington, DC -- For the second year, the National Endowment for the Arts will bring outstanding jazz musicians, writers, producers, and scholars to communities across the nation through NEA Jazz Masters Live. For the 2009-10 season, 12 organizations will receive grants totaling $250,000 through the program to support multi-event, extended engagements, featuring many jazz greats who have received an NEA Jazz Masters Award, the nation’s highest honor in jazz. Managed by Arts Midwest, the program offers audiences the unique opportunity to enter into a deeply creative and ultimately personal dialogue with these renowned artists.

Among the more than 25 NEA Jazz Masters participating in NEA Jazz Masters Live events are Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea, Jimmy Heath, Ahmad Jamal, and Hank Jones, as well as jazz historian and educator Dan Morgenstern and festival producer and pianist George Wein. The 12 grant recipients include venues such as the Detroit International Jazz Festival and the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans.


"Jazz artists have wonderful music to share and fascinating stories to tell." said Acting NEA Chair Patrice Walker Powell. "We are fortunate to have among our NEA Jazz Masters many of the artists who have been on the forefront of change and NEA Jazz Masters Live provides audiences with invaluable access to both their music and their stories."

Through NEA Jazz Masters Live, the Masters share their expertise in performances, master classes, clinics, lectures, and short term residencies. The majority of the grantees will present several NEA Jazz Masters. For instance, as part of the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival in Vermont, the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts will feature three NEA Jazz Masters in residence: saxophonist and composer Sonny Rollins, guitarist and composer Jim Hall, and critic, journalist, and record producer Nat Hentoff.


During the first year of NEA Jazz Masters Live in 2007-2008, 28 Masters participated in engagements such as:

NEA Jazz Masters Week that included a moderated "sound table" discussion with Nancy Wilson and John Levy was presented by the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild.
The Detroit International Jazz Festival presented twelve different events, featuring eight NEA Jazz Masters, included "talking tent" sessions with the artists and performances by student ensembles under the direction of Benny Golson and Jimmy Heath.

A Ft. Lauderdale restaurant that featured live jazz on a consistent basis for the past year, but did wish to promote the music through advertising, has closed.

Christine's, located at 2671 E Oakland Blvd, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida has provided excellent live jazz music over the past year while serving excellent cusine to a loyal clientele.

It was noted that two new venues in that area of Fort Lauderdale have recently begun regular presentation of jazz music.

As stated in the notice from management to musicians and staff, "Effective midnight on Saturday, August 1st, Christine's is closed. "
