Keep Jazz Growing in Gainesville: Giving Tuesday Appeal from Gainesville Big Band

Updated: November 2025
GIVING TUESDAY SUPPORT REQUEST

Gainesville Big Band – Strengthening Jazz Education & Community Outreach

Dear Gainesville Big Band friends,

This Giving Tuesday, November 18, community members are invited to join Gainesville Big Band in sustaining the presence of live jazz throughout the region. The organization continues to serve as an anchor for local music, providing performances, education, and meaningful engagement for audiences of all ages. Support on Giving Tuesday helps ensure that this work remains vibrant, accessible, and inclusive for everyone who values live music in North Central Florida.

This fall, the band introduced an exciting new outreach initiative: The Swingtet, a four-member ambassador ensemble drawn from the full Big Band. The group brings live jazz directly into the community with programs that connect music to stories of American history. Their performances are tailored for schools, libraries, retirement communities, civic organizations, and other groups with a desire to learn, listen, and experience jazz up close. These sessions strengthen understanding of America’s musical heritage while giving audiences a chance to enjoy a professionally presented small-group setting.

Looking ahead, Gainesville Big Band is preparing a significant education project: a Summer Jazz Camp for kids in 2027. This new program is designed to encourage young musicians, build confidence, and help the next generation discover their own pathways into jazz. Certified teachers, experienced players, sectional coaching, improvisation workshops, and ensemble training are all part of the planned curriculum. To make the camp possible, the organization must raise $8,000, covering faculty, materials, equipment, and student scholarships. Community support is essential for turning this vision into reality.

Your Giving Tuesday contribution—whether $25, $100, $500, or more—directly fuels several key areas:

• Production and operational expenses for the regular Gainesville Big Band concert season, helping keep performances affordable and accessible.
• Scholarships and teacher support for the future 2027 Summer Jazz Camp, ensuring that students of all backgrounds can participate.
• Educational outreach programming presented by The Swingtet, expanding live jazz access to youth, seniors, and public audiences who benefit from cultural enrichment.

Thank you for supporting live jazz in Gainesville and sustaining programs that help music grow in the hearts of listeners and future musicians alike.

Warmly,
Patsy Murray
GBB Board President and all the members of Gainesville Big Band
