The Jazz Lovers’ Club of the Villages, Florida, announces the 2024 annual Bob Washington Jazz Scholarship Award Program competition for jazz instrumentalists and vocalists who are high school seniors, college freshmen, or sophomores. We are keenly interested in those potential applicants who are determined to advance their contribution to the preservation and evolution of what is generally accepted, and defined, as “straight ahead” jazz music.

This year’s program will consist of eight awards, totaling $11,250 as follows:

First place:                  $ 2,500                                        Fifth place:                 $ 1,250          

Second place:             $ 2,000                                        Sixth place:                 $ 1,000

Third place:                $ 1,750                                        Seventh place:             $    750

Fourth place:              $ 1,500                                        Eighth place:                $    500

The funds will be disbursed directly to the school or equipment provider as warranted after proper documentation has been completed. The finals will be held on Sunday, April  28, 2024 at the Laurel Manor Recreation Center in The Villages. A rhythm section of professional musicians will be provided. 

Finalists  will only be selected from recorded selections to be submitted by the applicants. (Please see the attached application form.) Please record your audition music (one up-tempo or medium tempo “swinger” and one “ballad") in either WAV or MP3 format and email the files to: mcmusician@comcast.net.  In addition, applications must be supplemented by at least one “Letter of Reference” from a credible individual attesting to the applicant’s musicianship, character, and seriousness of the intention to the continuation of jazz studies. The references may be forwarded separately. Applications must be received by midnight March 16, 2024. All applications become the property of The Jazz Lovers' Club of The Villages, Inc.

 The Bob Washington Jazz Scholarship Committee, representing The Jazz Lovers’ Club of The Villages,  will appreciate sincerely your efforts to support this program by giving it wide dissemination among your students, or former students, who might qualify in accordance with the guidelines stated above.
