The next Tampa Jazz Club concert at HCC/Ybor City will honor one of the most iconic figures in the music, the visionary saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter. Two premiere Bay Area saxophonists, Jack Wilkins and Jeremy Carter, will lead an outstanding group in the Mainstage Theatre on Sunday, October 8, at 3:00 pm, as part of the HCC Visual & Performing Arts Series.
The quintet for the Wayne Shorter tribute includes longtime TJC favorites, bassist Mark Neuenschwander (USF) and pianist Per Danielsson (UCF). And as a special treat, we welcome back drummer Danny Gottlieb (of the original Pat Metheny Group) who is in constant demand and a veteran of hundreds of recordings, rejoining his Florida colleagues.
The concert will feature music from Shorter’s remarkable series of Blue Note recordings in the 1960s (songs including Speak No Evil, Infant Eyes, Black Nile) along with pieces he wrote for the bands of Art Blakey and Miles Davis in the same era.
The jazz world has honored this great artist, who passed away in March, in many ways this year including the highly-praised 3-part documentary, ‘Zero Gravity,’ which began streaming on the day he would have turned 90.
