The next Tampa Jazz Club concert in the Mainstage Theatre at HCC/Ybor City is a Centennial Celebration of the groundbreaking guitarist Wes Montgomery, featuring the LaRue Nickelson Quartet, on Sunday, March 19, 2023 at 3:00. These Sunday afternoon concerts are part of HCC’s Visual & Performing Arts Series.
The most influential guitarist of his time, Wes Montgomery had a brief recording career, but an impact that has resonated for decades. Emerging from Indianapolis as a self-taught artist, his innovations changed the language of jazz guitar. Wes was named Downbeat’s ‘New Star’ in 1960, and word spread fast in the jazz world. By mid-decade, his more commercial records brought him a much wider audience. But in 1968, he was lost to a heart attack at the age of 45.
LaRue Nickelson’s extraordinary guitar playing has been apparent to Bay Area listeners for a long time. A product of the Gibbs HS Magnet Program (under David Pate), he attended USF and has taught there for more than 20 years. He’s long been a member of Chuck Owen’s Jazz Surge, featured prominently on the 5-movement concerto ‘River Runs’ in 2012, and has shared the stage with many of the jazz greats. LaRue has often been heard with Bay Area artists including the Michael Ross Quartet, Whitney James, and the Florida Bjorkestra, and is a prolific composer of original material.
The quartet for this concert will include some of our favorite artists returning to the Mainstage: pianist Per Danielsson, bassist Joe Porter, and drummer Walt Hubbard. Please join us for a great Sunday afternoon of jazz with The LaRue Nickelson Quartet, honoring the legacy of Wes Montgomery!
