The third annual Faena Summer Jazz Series, in partnership with American Airlines, is thrilled to welcome vocalist Alicia Olatuja on July 17th, 2019 in very special performance at the intimate and glamorous Faena Theater.
Alicia Olatuja’s gorgeous voice, artistic versatility and her regal, yet warm presence have been astounding audiences everywhere. She first came into the national spotlight as the featured soloist with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir at President Barack Obama’s second inauguration. She is one of three featured vocalists on the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s national touring project, Songs of Freedom.
Alicia will be performing selections from her most recent album, “Intuition: From The Minds of Women” (Resilience Records) which celebrates the songs of female composers from Brenda Russell to Joni Mitchell to Tracy Chapman to Chilean songwriter Violetta Parra. In the macho world of jazz, where women are often considered secondary, Alicia empowers women songwriters and interprets their songs with tremendous artistry and exquisite care.
Joining Alicia will be four of today’s most outstanding musicians: Grammy-winning drummer and co-producer of her two solo albums, Ulysses Owens, Jr.; Australian bassist Dane Alderson (also a member of the Yellowjackets), keyboardist David Rosenthal (Billy Joel’s musical director), and Sullivan Fortner, Jr., considered to be one of the best jazz pianists of his generation.
The Faena Summer Jazz Series is produced and curated by Grammy- nominated record producer Rachel Faro and hosted by the legendary Grammy- nominated percussionist and 88.9 FM WDNA radio host Sammy Figueroa and presented in South Florida’s most beautiful venue, the Faena Theater. This sumptuous space, which evokes the grand style of European opera houses juxtaposed with the glamour of 1950’s Miami, is marked by gold-leaf and red velvet décor and a gorgeous chandelier.

Just 18 years old and blind since early childhood, Matthew Whitaker has achieved international acclaim for his awe-inspiring talent and performed across the world in impressive venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and Harlem’s Apollo Theater where, at age 10, he opened for Stevie Wonder’s Hall of Fame induction. He has also charmed millions through his television performances on NBC’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and Fox’s “Showtime At The Apollo”, where he won first place. On August 21, the talented artist makes his return to Faena Theater after performing in Faena's 2018 Summer Jazz Series.

Famed percussionist Sammy Figueroa and his Latin Jazz Explosion returns to Faena Theater for another explosive performance of Latin Jazz featuring special guest Maria Rivas. As one of music's leading percussionists, Figueroa has played with some of the world's greatest artists, such as David Bowie, Chaka Khan and Mariah Carey, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Quincy Jones, George Benson, and many more. Sammy Figueroa and The Latin All Stars will be joined by Maria Rivas, Venezuelan Latin jazz singer whose most recent album, “Motivos”, was nominated for a 2018 Latin Grammy. Rivas has also been recognized as a Latin Grammy Official Artist.
