USF’s Monday Night Jazz Season Opens with
"Duke’s In Town"
Featuring Ellington Bassist JOHN LAMB, on October 1
The USF School of Music and the Tampa Jazz Club announce the new season of USF’s Monday Night Jazz, a series of performances by prominent jazz artists with USF faculty and student ensembles, presented continuously since 1996. The monthly programs in the USF Concert Hall will begin with an evening of Duke Ellington’s music, featuring the remarkable bassist from the Ellington Orchestra in the 1960s, John Lamb.
Throughout its history, Monday Night Jazz has not only brought top-flight performances to area audiences, but enriched the USF experience with clinics and master classes by the visiting artists. “Our students get to interact with great jazz artists every month,” said USF Jazz Studies Director Jack Wilkins. “At many schools, they don’t have that opportunity.”
The season opener, on October 1, is a celebration of Duke Ellington’s music, featuring JOHN LAMB and the USF FACULTY JAZZ ENSEMBLE. Bassist John Lamb, with a big, soulful sound, perfect time, and a commanding stage presence, is a Bay Area treasure. As Duke Ellington’s bassist, he toured the world and appeared on historic recordings including "The Far East Suite."
He maintains a busy performance schedule after decades as a music educator, and a few years ago traveled to Toronto to record "Conversations – North of the Border," which includes his composition, "Duke’s In Town." Lamb brings a singular insight into the incomparable music of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. The USF Faculty Jazz Ensemble features saxophonist JACK WILKINS, trumpeter JAMES SUGGS, trombonist TOM BRANTLEY, pianist CHRIS ROTTMAYER, guitarist LaRue Nickelson and drummer RIC CRAIG.
