The monthly Sunshine Jazz Concert Series is pleased to welcome back popular Latin Jazz band ORIENTE! Led by bandleader, guitarist and songwriter Eddy Balzola, the band’s syncopated rhythms are spicy while being drenched with melody and harmony. Oriente plays the Jazz you love, and a bit of blues too, all in their signature tropical and soulful style.
ORIENTE! debuted in 1993 at Snug Harbor Jazz Club in New Orleans’ French Quarter. The Snug / Nola audiences connected deeply with the band’s original Cuban Jazz and Blues style, and they were invited back to the famed club and city many times over the years. That was mostly before Hurricane Katrina dealt that tragic blow to the historic birthplace of so much music.
Balzola’s group has changed some personnel over 25 years but the current lineup is seasoned and solid, including Yoel Del Sol with 18 years on percussion and backup vocals. Veteran Memphis trumpeter Stuart King along with Dony Felix on bass, and Rey Monroig on drums have been on board well over 6 years, allowing wonderful arrangements to develop. ORIENTE! continues to maintain a steady schedule of festivals, clubs and concerts. They’ve played from Key West and the Southwest to the Caribbean and Europe. Some highlights include appearing at the St. Lucia Jazz Festival, New Orleans and JVC Jazz Fest. The band was featured on PBS International Travel show “Music Voyager” which is still seen worldwide, and on the Food Network “Live with Chef Bobby Flay”. ORIENTE has produced five recordings to date including the latest, titled “Soul En Clave”.
