National Hispanic Heritage Month to be Celebrated with Jazz Concert by La Lucha at HCC Ybor Campus Sept 25, 2016

Sunday, September 25th, the Spanish Lyric Theatre presents La Lucha. The Tampa Bay area based jazz band will pay tribute to National Hispanic Heritage Month with a concert at the HCC Ybor Campus Performing Arts Building. La Lucha will perform songs spanning the history, culture and influences of Jazz throughout Latin America. They will be joined with special guests, trumpeter James Suggs & singer/poet Gloria Muñoz. Their repertoire includes new arrangements of popular Spanish hits and hidden musical gems from Colombia, Mexico, Argentina, Cuba and the United States. Awarded Creative Loafing’s “Best of the Bay Jazz Ensemble” 2013, 2014 & 2015, La Lucha is a Tampa Bay based trio that consists of three friends from three different parts of the world; Colombia, Mexico & United States. Their repertoire is a diverse mixture of Latin inspired rhythms with Jazz standards, twisted arrangements of pop songs and original compositions. La Lucha was awarded the “Think Small to Think Big Grant,” by Creative Pinellas, featured presenters at TEDxTampa Bay (2014) & TEDxUSF (2015) and were honored by a grant through the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, to present a multi-media project raising awareness for Alzheimer’s disease.

Gloria Muñoz is a singer & poet from St. Petersburg, Florida. She was been honored by the Estelle J. Zbar Poetry Prize, the Bettye Newman Poetry award and most recently The Best New Poets Anthology. Gloria received Creative Loafing's “Best of the Bay Local Poet” in 2014. 

James Suggs is a trumpet player who now resides in St. Petersburg. He was the featured soloist while on tour with the world famous Glenn Miller Orchestra and also had the honor of playing with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. Suggs spent eight years living and performing in Buenos Aires, Argentina. While there, he toured with Argentinean bands, visiting countries including: Chile, Ecuador, Uruguay, Venezuela, Mexico, England, Portugal and Spain.

As the oldest performing arts company and the only bilingual theatre in Tampa, Spanish Lyric Theatre/S.L.T. Productions is committed to promoting the cultural history and diversity of our city and to creating opportunities for local talent of all ages, nationalities, and denominations.
