What does a guy like me...(We wouldn't know Allen Kanovsky, because there is only ONE like you!)

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 06/30/14

...do for fun? First and foremost, get out of the house and find some live JAZZ or BLUES or Opera or Ballet. Try calling some pals to join you. Avoid dining out --- alone. So here's what happened last night.

Start with Ms. Reeeeta Wilburn, Jeff Prine (guitar), Mitch Goldstein (B3) and Danny (brushmaster)Burger on drums. How about friends like Babette, Jimmy Belize with Nancy, Mark & Liz, Bill (the ump),Piano Bob, Capt. Bob, sculptor Davis Murphy, Jeff's look alike daughter Jennifer, Ron Anonymous out for a night of 'Detroit' moves with Beautiful Brenda and dance partner Denise Shuster. Jeff is playing a '56 Gibson Les Paul Gold Top guitar that he's not quite happy with. His favorite is his '52 (same make, same model). It's Mitch's birthday and a holiday mood pervades the house. They are clappin" and tappin' from the very first note of the instrumental opening. Rita takes the stage and sings a BLUESy "You Made Me Leave My Happy Home" which affords me the chance to do "The Fish" with Denise. Ms. Wilburn has a special way to do "The Thrill Is Gone" utilizing her voice to do rhythmic patterns. The band and Rita jump "My Baby Just Cares For Me"---Me and Denise do a little bit of "Lindy". Rita invites the audience to snap their fingers in time and sings "Fever". This brings Ron Anonymous and Beautiful Brenda on to the dance floor. Detroit locomotion--uh huh, uh huh. You like love songs? How about an emotional "The First To Say Goodbye". A change of genre with 'funk' in the house with "Give Me One Reason To Stay" and almost every lady in the house is on the floor shakin' their B&B's. Rita invites young Shakeem Fraser (tenor sax) to the stage for "Blue Moon".

I invite Rita to dance knowing that she will urge me to place my head on her bosom. It doesn't take much urging as my neck is at an appropriate height. I close my eyes. How about dreaming with your head on a cloud. That ends the set giving me time to recover while chatting it up with friends.

The 2d set started with Jeff singing a very soft and easy BLUES, "I Need You So Bad". He follows with an original bit of western swing. Thankfully, Rita returns to the stage and invites Katt Riggins up to join her in "Rock Me Baby". Talk about inspirational songs. It inspires me to dance with Rita again and then with Katt. Let me give you something to envision. Rita must be an even 6' tall. I doubt that Katt is 5'. I admit they are both a handful of pure pleasure to dance with.

I would like to review the rest of the evening for you and I have the hand-written notes to do so. Unfortunately it is coming close to the time that I have to go for my radiation (only one more after today) treatment. The play list and dancers will have to suffice: "Unchain My Heart" Ron and Brenda dancing----"At Last", Mark & Liz on the floor----"I Love My Man" with a 10* solo by Mitch----"You Make Me Feel So Good" and Rita invites all ladies wearing black & white up to join her in song. & ladies are up. I am wearing B&W. I will not pass up the opportunity to be on the floor with 7 ladies regardless of the colors of their skin or attire. Last set: "Summertime" with Shakeem joining in.

The night ended with "Stormy Monday" Yep, it was 12:15am and Monday. See ya.

It is often difficult...(Even for a jazz & blues Superman like you, Allen Kanvosky?) Turk Mauro brings it home at Arts Garage.

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 06/29/14

...to admit you made a mistake. In a poem I once wrote there was a line that read "I ain't always right but I'm never wrong". Yesterday I was wrong.

I wrote that Turk Mauro's upcoming appearance at Arts Garage was a "comeback" This was no comeback. It was a STILL HERE.

To save face, the mistake was partially Turk's own fault. Last year he announced at this same venue that it was his farewell appearance. So what was this? The 2d coming?.

Seriously, it was as entertaining a night as anyone could expect. Turk was at the top of his game. Jumpin' and jivin'. his playing exciting, his patter humorous and enough musical guests to pack a bus. Let's start with the rhythm section. The Orta brothers, Mike (piano), Nicky (bass) - and their Mom looking better than ever was there too - and Danny 'Brush Master' Burger (drums). Guest appearances included Nicole Yarling (violin/vocals), the young Christian Cummings (alto sax), Randy Emerick (bari), Debbie Orta (vocals) and Turk's brother Ron Turso (drums). The room was filled with people I know and some I don't. Tania (Cuban fellow traveler), Richie and Ruth, Rich Race, Alyona's Mom & Dad, Heidi and at my table Rick (MJC) and Fran Katz and my dance partner Denise.

What's that you say? Enough B.S.?

You want to know about the music? Okay. You can't go wrong with Cole Porter, so Turk chooses "It's All Right With Me" as the opening tune. From the count off on this group will swing. With good reason. They all love playing this venue. Great sound and attentive audiences. Nicole is invited up and she intones a lively scat arpeggio to start her BLUES tune, ""I Want A Man With A Whole Lot Of Energy". The opening line is "My man is a country man" another is "He knows how to plow and can feed a cow". You make of it what you will. Nicole and Turk unite in a instrumental 'shout.'

Christian is next up and they do Charlie Parker's composition "Billie's Bounce." Playing alto, you know Christian will do justice to any Parker tune. Nicole be-bops pretty good on violin. Mike and Turk take turns and this is now a full out Jam. Nicky gets his turn at bat and then they all trade 4's. Turk shows his humorous side when he says that "I'm not at 100% --- but neither are you.
Nicole and Mike play "Oh What A Beautiful Morning". This version is not what you might hear in Oklahoma. Christian chooses Tadd Dameron's "Lady Bird" as his feature tune. It affords him the opportunity to display his talented phrasing. Mike and Nick's solos reflect Christians mood. If you are in a boppish mode, you know you're gonna play "Olio". Christian, Mike and Turk catch a groove. 'The joint is jumping'. Not the Louis Jordan tune, literally. Turk quotes "I Got Rhythm" and "I'm In Love With You" during his solo. He and Christian trade 4's and after Mike's solo Danny gets his shot. You know Turk won't leave a stage without a little bit of his "Dirty BLUES". He has all the ladies?? in the audience laughing with "when she saw what the elephant had, she wouldn't go home with me."  A totally appropriate way to end a rollicking 1st set.

Ron Turso joins the band to open the 2d set with "Secret Love". Nicole scats her portion and follows with a second chorus violin solo. During Mike's solo he quotes "Someone Like You". Nicky and Ron trade rhythmic 4's and then Nicole and Turk do the same. Everyone in the audience is having a 'blast.' But it's their turn to join in. Turk introduces a Sergio Mendez samba titled "Tu es Tanga". He encourages the audience to sing the lyric, which is --- La,, LaLa,, LaLaLa La,, LaLa --- it's the same in English. Nicole does a thrilling violin solo.

Turk invites Randy Emerick, playing a red bari sax, to the stage. While Randy is coming up, Turk tells a story about Buddy Rich. Turk played with that band for a while and we all know Buddy's reputation. Turk tells a tale of Buddy being wheeled into the operating room for a surgery' "Can we do anything for you, Mr. Rich?" a nurse asked. "Yeah, you can get rid of country music." Randy selects Duke's "Sophisticated Lady". If you want to do this song on a bari, you must be a master of tone. Randy is. The be-bop national anthem, "How High the Moon" is the next selection. Turk starts it in ballad tempo and then they are off. Mike's solo is bopped to the max. Randy and Ron do a drum/bari unison section before Ron gets a solo portion. I, personally, am thrilled by the performance level. Debbie Orta now graces the stage. She sings an emotional "Angel Eyes" which almost brings a tear to mine. Almost. Note about Debbie: slowly over the years she has become more involved with the JAZZ idiom. Her interpretation of this song and the expansion of her repertoire will certainly gain her a spot at the top. After Debbie's song, Turk talks about his past loves and sadly says "I'll never forget----what's her name." Nicky is featured on "So What" a tune that I have tried for years to write a lyric to. I am still trying to figure out why horn players always try---emphasize TRY, to sing. Turk does it with "I've Got the World On A String". Fortunately, he sells it well and Nicole saves it with her solo.

Turk says "Thank you for being here and good-night". The audience won't let them leave----"Encore, encore". "Uno mas" and they oblige.  "R"--"R A G"--"R A G G"--"Ragmop" from forever ago and swinging. Denise and I do a little jitterbugging to end the evening of fun and JAZZ.

Welcome home, Turk!!

I am seldom at...(...nor are you afraid to use them, Allen Kanovsky!)

Submitted by Al Kanovsky 06/28/14

...a loss for words but in this case I don't know where to begin. Should I start with Antonio Madrugo celebrating his 16th birthday performing at Dizzy's Club in Lincoln Center. How about playing for the President and First Lady in the White House. Does it begin with his first music lesson or with his scholarship to the Manhattan School of Music. You know what? Let me begin with last night at MOCA.

Here's Antonio (he will always be Tony to me) on stage with Harvel Nakundi (drums), Dion Kerr (bass) and Christian Cummings (alto sax). None of them are as old as 20. It is apparent from the first note on, that you will be hearing something special from these young artists. They start with just the rhythm trio and open with Thelonius Monk's "Nutty". Antonio via the keys and Nakundi at the drums are in constant musical conversation. They take this tune far beyond anything that Monk ever thought of. Nakundi uses mallets to introduce the next song, "Violent Opposition". The melody is far from violent. Instead it is soft and moving with Nakundi given free rein in his play. Antonio is playing a Yamaho SgO and uses all of it, expressing his musical thoughts. Dion is also given his chance at 'showing off'. Christian Cummings comes on stage to do "Cherokee". In his wildest dreams, Charlie Barnett, wouldn't have thought anyone could do what Christian did with this old JAZZ  standard. Antonio and Christian are playing unusual figures with Nakundi following in kind. Dion keeps them in time otherwise they would run completely amok. It is a wonder to hear and the audience loves it.

"You Came To Me From Out Of Nowhere" in a nice swing tempo with Antonio delivering an exceptional 5* solo. A bass/drums duo adds flavor to the rendition. The drum intro has me and seat mates, Bill & Dr.Jules trying to guess what the song might be. We don't get close. "Alone Together" done with deep emotion. Christian and Antonio employ creative phrasings and I realize how JAZZ continues to evolve. Following "Alone", Chris runs some scales and tools around a bit, settling down to a nice Nakundi set beat. They are playing the BLUES. Not in the formal BLUES mode, but rather in the chord and rhythmic structures of what I call 'The Music For the Day After Tomorrow". I am totally immersed in musical pleasure. The tune ends with a lingering Cummings coda. Antonio chooses the rhythm of Bossa Nova for the next tune and treats the audience to a most interesting keyboard solo. As they continue to the final number, I can't help thinking that playing JAZZ, for these young musicians is like painting on a blank canvas. Paint what you think, not necessarily what you see.

I spoke with Antonio for a moment and he is as enthusiastic and warm as he has always been. His Dad and Mom were there and it was good to chat with them as well. David Leon (sax), his Mom and Dad were in the audience as well. While saying 'So long' I bumped into Elaine Porteous (African Odyssey) and we agreed to meet at Le Chat Noir for some late night music.

There the music was billed as Gypsy JAZZ. A quartet named "Gypsy Heart" is fronted by Gyorgy Lakatos (guitar) with Les Blachut (keys/bongos), David Wilkinson (bass) and Geraldo Ubieda (drums). Geraldo is from Venezuela and has played with Maria Rivas on several occasions. Elaine and I arrived just as the first set ended. We each had a glass of wine from Le Chat Noir's extensive selection and Gio was kind enough to sate my appetite with a 1/2 turkey and 1/2 salame pandini. Gyorgy selected a super up-tempo "Besame Mucho" to open the 2d (and what turned out to be the final) set of the evening. Gypsy guitarists play acoustic and seldom wear a guitar strap. The hold their instrument much as I would hold a woman. Gently and with tender care. Gyorgy's dexterity and enunciation is thrilling. As the program continued I came to realize it wasn't JAZZ. It was jazzy and good to listen to. They ran through tunes like "Autumn Leaves", "Baby Light My Fire", a bolero, the theme from 'Godfather', "Oye Como Va", "La Bamba' and "All of Me". The musicianship was excellent. Each of them contributing to the excitement of the music itself. I will say this. If you want a woman to fall in love with you, find a dimly lit cellar, a well chilled bottle of Pinot Grigio, a gypsy guitarist playing in the background, hold both her hands in both of yours, look deeply into her eyes and don't say a word. It will happen all by itself.

To prove what I said about it not being JAZZ, they closed the show with "Ghost Riders In the Sky". It was not like Thelonius doing "I'm A Lone Cowhand". I spoke with Ezzio about the band not playing a 3d set. His only response was simply----"First time, last time".

As Jimmy Durante once said, time and time again ---
"Good night Mrs. Calabash wherever you are."
