Jazz Society of Pensacola Florida Announces Student Jazz Competition Winners

The Jazz Society of Pensacola recently presented its inaugural Student Jazz Competition.

Top finalists in the college division were: Jackson Willis, trombonist at Pensacola State College, first place; Michael Malone, trumpeter at Northwest Florida State College, second place; and Greg Lyon, guitarist at University of West Florida, third place.

Austin Paul Connor Jr., saxophonist and a 15-year- old sophomore at Booker T. Washington High School, was winner in the high school division.

Vocalist Destiny Howard of UWF; tenor saxophonist Jonathan Rodriguez, who performs with the UWF and PSC jazz bands; and trumpeter Tito Rogers of Northwest Florida State College all won honorable mentions in the college division.

Judges for the completion were Ray Smith, jazz director at Troy University; Pete Wehner, drummer/arranger from Mobile; and Gary Wofsey, trumpeter/arranger/composer from Panama City.
