Excellent Tribute Article on Eddie Higgins in Palm Beach ARTSPAPER

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

JAZZ WORLD REMEMBERS EDDIE HIGGINS

By Bill Meredith
"Drummer Art Blakey (1919-1990) took many a young, future jazz star on the road for seasoning with his group The Jazz Messengers between the 1950s and the 1980s. The list included Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Keith Jarrett, Jackie McLean, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Joanne Brackeen, Benny Golson, Chuck Mangione and Cedar Walton.

It might have also included Haydn "Eddie" Higgins, but the pianist turned down Blakey's offer, deciding he didn't want to travel. Higgins was firmly established in the Chicago scene at the time, leading his own trio at the Windy City's popular London House club between the late 1950s and late 1960s. Guest stars who appeared there, and subsequently hired Higgins to record with them, included Shorter, Morgan, and Coleman Hawkins.

In declining Blakey's invitation, Higgins certainly changed..."

Blues Legends B.B. King and Buddy Guy to Play Florida's Seminole Hard Rock

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Blues Legends B.B. King and Buddy Guy Belt It Out at Hard Rock Live on February 2

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Blues legends B.B. King and Buddy Guy are set to belt it out at Hard Rock Live at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on Monday, February 2 at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale now.

For more than half a century, Riley B. King - better known as B.B. King - has defined the blues for a worldwide audience. Since he started recording in the 1940s, he has released over 50 albums, many of them time-honored classics.

Mississippi-born King played on street corners for dimes in his youth, sometimes playing in as many as four towns a night. In 1947, he hitchhiked to Memphis, TN, to pursue his music career and the rest is blues history.

King’s first big break came in 1948 when he performed on Sonny Boy Williamson's radio program on KWEM out of West Memphis. His first #1 R&B hit was "Three O’clock Blues" in 1951. Since then, he’s produced such classics as "Payin' the Cost to Be the Boss," "The Thrill Is Gone," How Blue Can You Get," "Everyday I Have the Blues," and "Why I Sing the Blues.” Over the years, the Grammy Award-winner scored another #1 hit with 1952’s "You Don't Know Me," and four #2 R&B hits, 1953's "Please Love Me," 1954's "You Upset Me Baby," 1960's "Sweet Sixteen, Part I," and 1966's "Don't Answer The Door, Part I." B.B.'s most popular crossover hit, 1970's "The Thrill Is Gone," went to #15 on the pop charts.

B.B. was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 1984 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. He received NARAS' Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 1987, and has received honorary doctorates from Tougaloo (MS) College in 1973; Yale University in 1977; Berklee College of Music in 1982; Rhodes College of Memphis in 1990 and Mississippi Valley State University in 2002. In 1992, he received the National Award of Distinction from the University of Mississippi.

In 1991, B.B. King's Blues Club opened on Beale Street in Memphis, and in 1994, a second club was launched at Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles. A third club in New York City's Times Square opened in June 2000 and most recently two clubs opened at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut in January 2002. In 1996, B.B.'s autobiography, "Blues All Around Me" (written with David Ritz for Avon Books) was published.

Contemporary and fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Buddy Guy was a chief guitar influence to rock titans like Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, and Vaughan, a pioneer of Chicago's fabled West Side sound and a living link to that city's halcyon days of electric blues.

Guy has received five Grammy Awards, 23 W.C. Handy Blues Awards (the most any artist has received), Billboard’s Century Award for distinguished artistic achievement and the Presidential National Medal of Arts.

Born in 1936 to a sharecropper's family and raised on a plantation near the small town of Lettsworth, Louisiana, George "Buddy" Guy was one of five children born to Sam and Isabel Guy. By late 1955, Guy’s heart and mind were already firmly attached to the guitar and the blues sounds he heard emanating from the radio.

Around 1957, Guy had taken up residency in Chicago's fabled 708 Club. By the early 1960s, Guy was a first-call session man at Chess Records backing up the likes of Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, and Sonny Boy Williamson. One landmark recording with Waters, Folk Singer, was cut in September of 1963 and released in the spring of 1964. In addition, Guy began to cut a considerable catalog of sides under his own name. By the end of the 1960s, he was staking out new creative territory, cutting albums like 1967's I Left My Blues in San Francisco and 1968's A Man and the Blues. Guy’s stinging, attacking electric guitar style and wild, impassioned vocals, was capturing the minds of a growing number of rock musicians.

The were no fewer than 20 releases under Guy's name during the 1970s and '80s, the best of them collaborations with the late harp master Junior Wells. In 1991, his comeback smash Damn Right, I've Got the Blues (reissued in 2005), 1993's Feels Like Rain, and 1994's Slippin' In all earned Grammy Awards.

Subsequent releases include Live: The Real Deal (1996), Heavy Love (1998) and Sweet Tea (2001). Bring 'Em In (2005), found Guy trading licks with the likes of Carlos Santana and John Mayer on a set featuring covers of classic soul songs.

Guy’s latest release is Skin Deep (2008) that features such younger players as pedal steel virtuoso Robert Randolph and husband-and-wife guitar slingers Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks.

Tickets cost $90, $75, $60 & $45*; all seats are reserved and available at the Hard Rock Live Box Office, open Monday – Saturday from noon to 7pm and on Sunday – only open on event days at noon. Tickets also are available at all Ticketmaster outlets online at http://www.ticketmaster.com/ or charge by phone: 1-800-745-3000. Doors open one-hour prior to show start time. *Additional fees may apply.

South Florida JAZZ welcomes jazz vocalist KATHY KOSINS

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

January 9, 2010 - 8:00 p.m. - South Florida JAZZ welcomes jazz vocalist KATHY KOSINS who is making her first Broward County appearance with her “Ladies of Cool” show, an homage to the great West Coast jazz vocalists of the early years of modern jazz, Anita O’Day, June Christy, Chris Connor and Julie London.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – South Florida’s premier modern jazz organization is thrilled to feature a unique jazz artist who has a very special talent for revisiting and reworking the music of earlier eras of the vocal jazz tradition.

This concert takes place at the 500-seat Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr Blvd in Davie 33314. Tickets are $35 ($25 for South Florida JAZZ members and $10 for students at any level with I.D.) and may be purchased from the Broward Center Box Office by calling 954.462.0222 in Broward County; also toll-free at 877-311-SHOW, as well as online at: southfloridajazz.org, the presenting organization’s official Web site.

KATHY KOSINS

A Detroit, Michigan native, Kathy Kosins has explored the vocal jazz idiom of the West Coast “cool school,” with particular emphasis on those extraordinary singers of the 1940s and 1950s that were household names to jazz and pop fans alike in that era. Kathy is an accomplished interpreter of jazz, who has a voice and style that shares that intimate and alluring quality found in “The Ladies of Cool.”
In addition to her extremely busy touring performance schedule, Kathy is equally in demand as a clinician in collegiate vocal jazz programs throughout the country. Education is a passion with her, but so is bringing fresh interpretations to some remarkable music that resonates with all audiences, especially those who are familiar with these ladies:

Anita O’Day – The most prominent female jazz singer not named Billy Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan, Anita was a pistol. Her career got jump-started in the early 1940s with Gene Krupa’s band, followed by stints with Woody Herman and Stan Kenton before embarking on a solo career. She had a soft, raspy voice and sang with the tonal qualities of an alto saxophone. Her rhythmic feel was propulsive, and thus unique. She could improvise at any tempo. She might have been the dean of the cool school of vocalists, but she still found herself frequently on suspension.

June Christy – this warm and smooth-voiced blond, who began singing with big bands at age 13, followed Anita O’Day into the Stan Kenton Orchestra in 1945 where she remained for the better part of seven years. Her style was ultra-cool and sexy. Her inflections made her instantly recognizable. June had a successful solo career, mentored by husband and master saxophonist-arranger, Bob Cooper, and also band leader/arranger Pete Rugolo who was a close collaborator. She is best remembered for her interpretations of “Something Cool” and “Midnight Sun.”

Chris Connor – Another attractive blond, Chris was singing with bandleader Claude Thornhill and was discovered by June Christy, who was planning on leaving the Kenton band for a solo career. June recommended her to her boss and Chris spent a year on the band before going off on her own. She enjoyed moderate popularity for years and played the major jazz rooms around the country in addition to recording more than 40 records. Her signature song was “All About Ronnie.”

Julie London – A statuesque beauty and pin-up girl, Julie parlayed some acting talent and an intimate, sultry voice into a successful career. She studied acting and music in her teens. After her marriage to actor and producer Jack Webb dissolved, she took up with pianist Bobby Troup who groomed her singing career that paralleled and surpassed her acting efforts. Billboard named her Most Popular Female Singer from 1955 through 1957. She is likely best remembered for her interpretation of the plaintive ballad, “Cry Me A River.”

Funding for this organization is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.

United States House of Representatives Honors Miles Davis'"Kind of Blue"

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Tuesday, December 15, 2009

(12-15) 11:28 PST WASHINGTON, (AP) --

Fifty years after jazz legend Miles Davis recorded "Kind of Blue," the House voted Tuesday to honor the landmark album's contribution to the genre.

Davis collaborated on the record with saxophonists John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, pianists Bill Evans and Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb.

Rep. John Conyers, a Michigan Democrat who sponsored the measure, said the group "made musical history and changed the artistic landscape of this country and in some ways the world." The resolution recognizing the album's 50th anniversary passed on a 409-0 vote.

Columbia Records released the album in August 1959. The original album — only 37 minutes — had a huge impact that extended beyond jazz to other types of music — from rock musicians such as the Allman Brothers and Carlos Santana to minimalist composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass.

Davis, one of the greatest trumpeters in jazz history, died of a stroke in 1991 at age 65. He was renowned for morphing his cool jazz into fusion and experimental sounds that later gave way to jazz funk and hip-hop grooves. Cobb is the only musician from the "Kind of Blue" album who is still alive.

The resolution is H.Res.894.

ROY ROGERS

Born in California in 1950, he began playing guitar at the age of twelve and discovered the great blues players early on. Through the years he developed a distinctive style of playing slide guitar that is instantly recognizable and has turned him into one of the premier slide guitarists performing today.
Rogers formed his own band, the Delta Rhythm Kings, in 1980, hit the club circuit, and then toured Europe with the 1982 San Francisco Blues Festival Revue (recording an album with that Revue in Paris).

Shortly after returning from Europe, Rogers joined John Lee Hooker and his Coast to Coast Blues Band. Roy eventually began to open shows as a solo act, performing some of the classic country blues and original compositions he’d been perfecting for years.

Said Hooker, “I just can’t say enough good things about Roy. Some of the best slide I’ve heard, best blues I’ve heard.”
Years later Roy would produce a total of four recordings for John Lee Hooker for which he received two Grammys. He received additional Grammy nominations for his songwriting and his work on television and movie soundtracks, including “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “The Hot Spot” which he recorded with Miles Davis, John Lee Hooker and Taj Mahal.

He self- released his first live recording – Live at the Sierra Nevada Brewery Big Room - in 2005. The concert received wide national television exposure on PBS stations as part of the “Sierra Center Stage” series.  His latest release - Split Decision - which came out this summer, is his first studio recording with his band, The Delta Rhythm Kings, in seven years.

Jazz & Blues Florida will be hosting promotion nights for this event at Boston's on the Beach, The Orange Door, and Chef John's where you can win FREE tickets to this concert. Watch for updates at www.JazzBluesFlorida.com/Promotions

Gold Coast Jazz Presents JazzSLAM Education Program in Local Elementary Schools

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Fort Lauderdale, FL – How can a jazz quartet teach math and reading concepts through music? Through a program called JazzSLAM. This fun and interactive program reinforces basic language arts and math concerts through the music of jazz. Students experience how improvisation is similar to writing essays. They learn how "read, think and explain" questions are similar to the "12 bar blues" how narrative essay form is similar to "A-A-B-A" song form; and how persuasive and expository essay forms are similar to the "verse-chorus" song form.

JazzSLAM, the acronym for Jazz Supports Language Arts & Math, is a program that uses students' interest in music to help them understand the inherent underlying structures found also in language arts and math. JazzSLAM was designed by local jazz musician and educator, Mari Mennell-Bell. The program is being presented by the Gold Coast Jazz Society in several local elementary schools from December through May.

Program creator, Mari Mennel-Bell, holds a dual Masters degree in Elementary Education (K-6) and Music Education (K-12) from New York University and a Masters degree in Social Work from Adelphi University. While living in New York City she worked for The Children's Television Workshop as a researcher and as an independent consultant on "Using Music to Teach Reading". When her children were in school in Broward County, she observed their challenges to stay focused on academics and was inspired to create an experiential, hands-on approach to academic skills so she developed a program that makes learning fun through the use of jazz.

Presentations of the JazzSLAM program will occur in the following schools in Broward County:

Sheridan Hills Elementary - Dec 17; Coconut Palm Elementary - Jan. 21; Pembroke Pines Charter East Elementary - Jan. 26 ; Mirror Lake Elementary - Feb 2; Tradewinds Elementary - April 20; Deerfield Beach Elementary - April 27; Westchester Elementary and Norcrest Elementary in May (exact dates TBA).

The Gold Coast Jazz Society, the presenter of this program, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of jazz music through a mainstage concert series, free community concerts, jazz education programs and other events. Go online www.goldcoastjazz.org for more information about the Gold Coast Jazz Society or call 954-524-0805.

Jazz Concert Tribute to Benny Goodman in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

GOLD COAST JAZZ PAYS TRIBUTE TO BENNY GOODMAN

Fort Lauderdale, FL – 2009 marked the centennial of Benny Goodman, the “King of Swing”. To continue the celebration, the Gold Coast Jazz Society will present a special tribute concert of Goodman’s music by the Terry Myers Orchestra. The concert will occur on February 10, 2010 at the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The show begins at 7:45 pm. Single tickets are $35 and $40 and student tickets are $12. Purchase tickets through the Broward Center Box Office at 954-462-0222 or online at www.goldcoastjazz.org or www.browardcenter.org. A pre-concert Jazz Riff jazz talk will be given by WXEL radio personality, Stu Grant, at 7:00pm in the theater.

Goodman was an American jazz musician, band leader, clarinetist and fondly known as the “Patriarch of the Clarinet.” His popular bands included some of the biggest names in jazz and he launched the careers many famous musicians. Born in Chicago and one of nine children from poor immigrant parents, Goodman’s story is truly a “rags to riches” tale. As a youngster, Goodman’s father enrolled Benny and two brothers in music lessons. Benny learned quickly and was soon engaged as a professional musician in various local bands. The rest is history, as they say, as his career flourished as a catalyst for the swing movement. Goodman was also known for promoting racial integration in the bands in American popular music. "As far as I'm concerned, what he did in those days—and they were hard days, in 1937—made it possible for Negroes to have their chance in baseball and other fields," said Lionel Hampton.

The Terry Myers Orchestra got its start as a Benny Goodman tribute band, so it’s fitting that they perform Goodman’s music in celebration of his centennial. The band is a favorite touring orchestra in Florida. Myers, a clarinetist and band leader, has played in numerous jazz festivals, including North Sea (Holland), Cork (Ireland), Birmingham (England), Copenhagen (Denmark), Sacramento, Sun Valley, Clearwater, Jacksonville, Maui, Redding (California), High Mountain (Oregon), Helena (Montana), Medford (Oregon), Sun Fest (West Palm Beach), Gainesville, Indianapolis, Elkhart (Indiana), Milwaukee, Bern (Switzerland), Central Illinois, Bix Festival (Iowa) and the Hong Kong Arts Festival.

Terry's dynamic career has enabled him to appear with a variety of talented players including Tommy Dorsey Orchestra (Buddy Morrow), Bob Haggert, Milt Hinton, Butch Miles, Warren Vaché, Monte Alexander, Flip Phillips, Bill Allred, John Allred, Chubby Jackson, Duffy Jackson, Rosemary Clooney, Eddie Higgins, Bobby Rosengarten, Phil Flanigan, Larry Elgart, Vince Giordano, Ira Sullivan, Nathan Page and many others.

Tickets are available for the Feb. 10 concert. The Gold Coast Jazz Society is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of jazz music through a mainstage concert series, free community concerts, jazz education programs and other events. Go online www.goldcoastjazz.org for more information about the Gold Coast Jazz Society or call 954-524-0805.

Jazz Arts Music Society of Palm Beach (JAMS) Announces 10th Anniversary Series of Florida Jazz

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

JAMS offers 6 fabulous concerts November - April annually.

TED HOWE  presents “An Evening of Duke Ellington”
DEC 14
Ted Howe brings a highly innovative freshness to the Ellington repertoire. The tunes – such classics as In a Sentimental Mood, Cara¬van, In My Solitude, Mood Indigo – are Ellington’s, but the styles in which Howe presents them are strictly Howe’s. A reviewer wrote of Howe’s 2005 release Ellington, on Summit, that he exhibits “imaginative ap¬proaches” in mixing various styles on each track. On It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing), he displays “effective stride piano chops”; shows his “playful side in a whimsical take on Sophisticated Lady”; and does bop variations on Take the A Train. Howe has made several recordings for Summit. His latest, Love Song, pays homage to Harold Arlen, Cole Porter and James Van Heusen.

JOHN COLIANNI QUINTET
JAN 26
The New York Times said it best: “He is the essence of a swinging pianist … a sudden flurry of complex runs can be finished before the listener is fully aware of what is happening.” The Toronto Star said he had “a limitless cauldron full of ideas” and played with “eye-opening intensity” and “effortless swing – Tatumesque.” During his career Colianni has performed with Lionel Hamp¬ton, Woody Allen and from 1991-1995 for Mel Tormé. In addition he was a winner in the first annual Thelo¬nious Monk Piano Competition. Colianni began working Monday nights with renowned guitarist Les Paul in August 2003 at The Iridium in New York. In Paul’s recent autobiography, he lauds the pianist, who appeared in the PBS documentary, Les Paul: Chasing Sound. Colianni’s playing is heard on the sound track of the 2009 film Revolutionary Road, which won a Golden Globe Award.

MARVIN STAMM & BILL MAYS
FEB 23
Trumpeter Marvin Stamm and pianist Bill Mays have collaborated since the 1990s. The two focus on the “great American songbook,” jazz standards, and even a smattering of classical pieces. Stamm was trumpet soloist with the Stan Kenton and Woody Herman bands. In 1966, he settled in New York City and played with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, among oth¬ers. He spent several years touring with Frank Sinatra and the Benny Goodman Sextet. Bill Mays is well-known for his talents at composing and arranging, has played with such notables as Shelly Manne, Bud Shank, Art Pepper, Ernie Watts and Tom Scott. He was a first-call studio pianist and accompanist for vocal¬ists, including Sarah Vaughan, Dionne Warwick and Anita O’Day. Moving to New York in 1984, he worked with many of the most important musicians of the era, such as Ron Carter, Gerry Mulligan, Clark Terry and Benny Golson.

DENISE THIMES
MAR 23
Hailing from St. Louis, jazz vocalist Denise Thimes has made appear¬ances all over the world with luminaries including Clark Terry, James Moody, Kevin Mahogany, Dr. Billy Tay¬lor, Benny Powell and Jimmy Heath. Terry has praised her lavishly, saying, “Denise ranks with the all-time greats such as Ella, Sassy, Lady Day, Nancy (Wilson), Dianne (Reeves), Monica (Zetterlund) and Carmen, to name a few.” Denise lists them as her greatest influences, along with Marlena Shaw and Carmen McRae. Thimes has appeared in jazz festivals around the nation and headlined at the Blue Note in New York. She has shared the stage with Tony Bennett, performed at the White House and for Queen Elizabeth II. The praise for Thimes is unstinting. Famed vocalist/composer Jon Hendricks said last year, “The only thing that Dianne Reeves, Diana Krall and even Nancy have on you is a name.”

ROSE MAX
APR 27
The music of Brazilian singer Rose Max and her guitarist husband Ramatis Moraes are bossa nova, samba and Brazilian jazz; the same fare that wowed American audiences in the Astrid and Joao Gilbertos’ collaborations with Stan Getz in the 1960s and as a duo in their own right in the ’70s. The sensuous appeal of this highly rhythmic music is timeless, and, plied by consummate artists such as Max and Moraes, never fails to delight. Max won the Brazilian Press Award for Best Female Brazilian Singer Residing and Performing in the USA three times – in 1997, 1998 and 2001. Max moved from Brazil to Miami in late 1993, where she has maintained a full performance schedule. The Miami New Times newspa¬per has been enthusiastic in its praise for Max and Moraes, declaring that they deliver “Brazilian jazz, samba and bossa so rich, you’ll think you just stumbled in off the streets of Rio de Janeiro.”

Famous Frank, Blue Tuesday Host and all-around famous guy, has announced the December line up for this happening place in Delray Beach, Florida, and continues to bring his favorite performers from around the corner and across the world to the avid patrons. Always free, always great. Starts at 8:30pm and just might end on time at 11:30. Kitchen & full bar open until closing time.

December 1: The Walker Smith Group - Florida's Sun Coast Blues Society Representative to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis next month! Jazz & Blues Florida will be in the house with a promotion for the Roy Rogers concert to benefit the Taras Foundation's Palm Beach Dolphin Research Project. Come meet Jessica, from the Foundation, and she will tell you all about the good work they do. We will be giving away two tickets to Roy's December 18th show at the Kravis Center. No cost to enter, just come, put your name in the hat, and be there for the drawing at 11pm. These are $35 tickets for one of the absolute best slide blues players out there. Come try your luck while having fun and supporting the local blues scene!

December 8: Steve Avery - EVERYBODY in Chicago and Tampa is invited down and over for this show, because they all know and love him!

December 15: David Shelley Band - 'nuf said. Be here!

December 22: Blue Tuesday Holiday Party (what makes this party different from every other Tuesday night? It is always a party!) with the Famous Frank's Blue Tuesday All Stars including Ron Taylor, Tim Kuchta, Pat Ward, Sheldon Voss, Terry Hanck, JP Soars and visiting special guest, blues legend, OTIS CADILLAC. Jazz & Blues Florida will be there with our annual Sac' o' Woe Holiday Promotion. Don't miss it. YOU, TOO, may win a used guitar stand, among other fine, fine prizes!

December 29: Biscuit Miller & The Mix will be mixing it up for the grown-ups and leaving the younglings with curious looks on their faces to close out the year on a high note for Blue Tuesday.

Who is online for 2010? How do these sound? Jason Ricci & New Blood, Damon Fowler, Pat Pepin, Josh Smith & The Frost, Motor City Josh, Delta Highway and Art Harris & The Z-Tones.

Famous Frank, always the gentleman, wishes to acknowledge the following for their continued support of this evening of high culture and low bass lines.
