Starting in 2017, The North Central Florida Blues Society has been celebrating Tim Fik’s birthday in December with a Blues Birthday Bash that includes multiple national touring Blues acts. This year’s event includes Blues Music Award winners Biscuit Miller and JP Soars and SiriusXM’s Early Times, along with top Florida acts the Bridget Kelly Band and Little Mike & the Tornadoes.
Biscuit Miller, a showman known for his blazing million-dollar smile and his high-energy shows, plays Chicago Blues with a funk side. Miller won Blues Music Awards for Best Bassist of the Year in 2012 and 2017. He is a born entertainer and is at home on the stage where he connects with his audience through a fun and funky approach to the Blues. Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, Miller spent ten years as the bass player for the Lonnie Brooks Band, and also played with Mojo Buford and Anthony Gomes. Since he started his own band, he has gained fame for his understanding of the importance of entertaining the audience, in addition to technical playing ability.
JP Soars is a Blues Music Award winner for the Contemporary Blues Male Artist category in 2013, and was also nominated in 2021. Soars and his band The Red Hots won the 2009 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN and claimed the prestigious Albert King Award as best guitarist. He has toured extensively through the United States, Canada, South America and Europe, and released an impressive catalog of powerful music, including being featured on an album with Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers, and released five albums on his own and with the Red Hots. Meeting B.B. King at the age of 19 sent Soars on the path of being a Blues Musician. Soars, who grew up in Cedarville, Arkansas, currently is making Boca Raton, FL his home, prides himself with having one of the tightest bands on the scene, with Red Hots bassist Cleveland Frederick and longtime drummer Chris Peet. A gritty and expressive vocalist, Soars elicits signature tones from hollow-body guitars, plus a home-made two-string cigar box guitar for his incendiary slide guitar playing.
With their recent release charting and garnering world-wide air play and inspired by classic and electric Blues, the Gainesville-based Bridget Kelly Band has placed their unique stamp on the Blues genre, with high-energy live performances and a hybrid sound that mixes Texas and Memphis Blues with various southern Blues traditions. The powerful and sultry vocals of singer Bridget Kelly along with the incendiary lead guitar work of Tim Fik forge a signature hybrid sound that combines female urban Blues with riff-driven rockin’ Blues guitar. The Bridget Kelly Band reached the semi-finals of the International Blues Challenge in both 2015 and 2016.
Known nationally as a DJ on BB King’s Bluesville on SiriusXM Satellite Radio, Early Times is a talented singer and guitarist originally from Sacramento. Blues Blast magazine calls him “a street poet and blues-rocker… stronger than the whisky that shares his name when it comes to fashioning clever lyrics atop a true-blue beat.”
Little Mike & the Tornadoes is well-known for its flawless, high-energy blues sound, modeled after the great Chicago bands of the ‘50s. Little Mike is a mean harmonica player who cut his teeth in New York City in the late 1970s and early 1980s, backing up legendary Bluesmen Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, and Jimmy Rogers, and was mentored by Paul Butterfield. Blues Blast magazine called them “old-school Blues delivered the right way by folks who feel it down to the core.”

Blues Music Award winner in 2021 and 2022 as best horn instrumentalist Jimmy Carpenter’s career has spanned over 35 years, and shows no sign of slowing down. The saxophonist, singer/ songwriter/arranger began in North Carolina in 1980, touring the East Coast with the renegade blues band, The Alka-Phonics. He then moved to Virginia to work with bluesrock outfit The Believers, where his talent for singing, songwriting, and the music business grew. During his tenure with these two groups Jimmy often played the stages of Tobacco Road, Boston's on the Beach, Skippers Smokehouse, Sloppy Joe's and other Florida strongholds of live music. Since then he has toured the globe with Tinsley Ellis, Jimmy Thackery, and, after a move to New Orleans in 2004, with Walter Wolfman Washington, Eric Lindell, and most recently, his long-time friend and musical cohort, Mike Zito. In addition to thousands of live performances, he has written, arranged, and recorded the horns for many of these artists’ recordings. Now living in Las Vegas, his reputation as one of the premiere Blues, Rock-n-Roll and R&B saxophonists continues to grow, and he is heavily involved with the very popular Big Blues Bender, as assistant talent buyer and musical director. In late 2017 Jimmy released his third solo album, which follows the acclaimed Toiling in Obscurity, (self-release, 2008), and Walk Away, (Vizztone, 2014). The aptly entitled Jimmy Carpenter Plays the Blues: is a straight-up, no frills, blues sax record, produced by Mike Zito and featuring classic blues covers and some cool originals. Jimmy continues to tour internationally with his own band, and often as a special guest on major festivals all over the world.
His latest release just out in September 2022 on Gulfcoast Records, The Louisiana Record, is currently enjoying world-wide airplay. Jimmy lived and performed in New Orleans from early 2004 until 2016, and his time there clearly influenced his music.“Without question, New Orleans and the music that flows out of that great city have had a huge impact on me, musically and personally,” Carpenter says. “These are songs by iconic American songwriters including Allen Toussaint, Fats Domino, and Dr. John. These are just a few of my favorites that helped shape me and my approach to writing, playing, and living. It is impossible to overstate the influence New Orleans, its music and its musicians have had on me, as player, songwriter, and performer. The Louisiana Record is my tribute to the mash-up of Blues, Soul, Rhythm & Blues, and Rock-n-roll that is New Orleans Music." Joining Jimmy Carpenter (sax and vocals) for the red beans and rice run of 11 songs on The Louisiana Record are: Mike Zito – guitars; Casandra Faulconer - bass guitar; John Gros - piano/organ; and Wayne Maureau – drums.
