Get A Taste of (and FOR) Jazz at Pompano Beach's Bailey Contemporary Arts in March, April & May

JAZZ Returns to Pompano Beach!
TICKETS
Join your jazz friends for a new kind of combo! A Taste of Jazz at Bailey Contemporary Arts will feature entertaining and educational encounters with the musical genre, accompanied by wine tastings. The introduction to jazz series will showcase the musicians of the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band, under the direction of Martin Hand.  The sessions will take place from 7-9 pm on March 7, April 4 and May 2, 2019.  Tickets $10-$20 per event. For more information www.baileyarts.org.

“A Taste of Jazz is a fun way to learn more about the celebrated musical genre without feeling intimidated or overwhelmed,” said Jody Leshinsky, Cultural Venues Programming Manager. “So many people want to learn more about this original American art form but do not know where to begin. We created this event series for them! And by adding wine tastings from local vendors, it will truly become a fun-filled social event.”

The Gold Coast Jazz Society has been a major presenter of jazz concerts, jazz education and jazz outreach programs in Broward County since 1992. They have maintained and preserved the heritage of jazz by presenting the music celebrating jazz's evolution over the past 100 years.
Session Topics:

March 7, 2019
What’s This Thing Called Jazz?  - A jazz trio (guitar/vocals, bass and drums) will introduce you to the musical form called jazz.  There is no better example of democracy than listening to a jazz ensemble.  You will hear how an ensemble adheres to the overall framework and structure of a song yet provides their own spin on the music through improvisation.
April 4, 2019
Where in the World is Jazz? – Where did jazz originate and how did it get to what it is today?  Join Martin Hand and the trio as they explore the origins of the music of jazz, how it moved throughout America and became the music it is today.
May 2, 2019
Jazz Forward -   Hear samples of how jazz is evolving and connecting with other forms of music.  Martin and the musicians of the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band will give you peek into the future of jazz.

Jazz Roots Series at Arsht Center Brings Leading Edge Jazz Performance to Miami March 8, 2019

R+R=NOW
In search of a sound that might
reflect the tenor of the times.

TICKETS

March 8, 2019 at 8 p.m.
REFLECT + RESPOND = NOW
Christian Scott, Terrace Martin, Derrick Hodge, Justin Tyson,
Taylor McFerrin and Robert Glasper, an all-star ensemble,
blur genre lines and inspire “a new generation of jazzers”
(Rolling Stone).

In an era when every headline carries some new horror or fresh worry, we need music that can clap back with immediacy, skill, and heart. We need a band so at home in its skin that it can play without ego and lead with love—artists whose very existence attests to resilience and hope. We need R+R=NOW, a supergroup assembled by Robert Glasper but functionally egalitarian, in no small part because its members are visionary players, composers, and producers on their own: Glasper on keys, Terrace Martin on synthesizer and vocoder, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah on trumpet, Derrick Hodge on bass, Taylor McFerrin on synth and beatbox, and newcomer Justin Tyson on drums. You could try to count up the GRAMMYs between them but you'd be missing the point. This genre-mashing outfit moves as one and, as their name reveals, with great purpose.

The debut album by R+R=NOW is a raw document titled Collagically Speaking that seamlessly adheres neo-soul to future-funk, West Coast jazz of the moment to astral electronica, instrumental hip-hop to musique concrète, avant-garde to classical. Guest voices get caught in that mix as well: actors Omari Hardwick (Power) and Terry Crews (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Expendables); actress Amanda Seales (Insecure); MCs Stalley and yasiin bey (f.k.a. Mos Def); and singers Amber Navran (of Moonchild) and Goapele. The themes that bind it all together are both spoken and inferred: romantic love, universal love, systemic bigotry, the women's movement, quiet power, wild creativity, personal loss and growth.

Terrace Martin, synthesizer and vocoder

Musician Workshop Presented by North Central Florida Blues Society in Gainesville Sunday, March 3, 2019

Don’t Play the Guitar-
Play the Music!

Sunday, March 3, 2019 ~ 2-3:30pm
Cypress & Grove Brewing Co.
1001 NW 4th St
Gainesville, FL 32601
(352)376-4993  cypressandgrove.com
North Central Florida Blues Society has George Worthmore coming to Gainesville to play a concert at Heartwood Soundstage on March 2 (CONCERT TICKETS AND INFO) and to present a workshop at 2 pm Sunday afternoon, March 3, at Cypress & Grove in Gainesville. The workshop costs $20 (ADVANCE TICKETS/RSVP) and is open to all levels of playing.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

It teaches how to take what you do with your fingers on a fretboard and place it as music in a listener’s mind. The workshop stresses the importance of musical fundamentals, especially tempo, pitch, and timbre, in creating professional-sounding music. It shows the guitarist how to up one’s game by using techniques and practices, to make sure the fundamentals are strong.

ATTENDEE ENDORSEMENTS:

“Yesterday, I left work early to attend a symposium on fingerstyle guitar at Elderly given by George Worthmore, famous NYC guitar dude who’s toured and played with Hot Tuna, Bo Diddley and others. When it came time for the lesson part, I received an in-depth drilling by one of the greats. What an honor and privilege. Showed me some cool Travis picking runs and really helped me understand that reading notes or tab and playing the song is different than actually delivering the music to an audience. It’s already helped me immensely. What a great insight George gave me on guitar!” – From an attendee at an Elderly Instruments Workshop , Lansing, Michigan

“We just had a Guitar Workshop here taught by George Worthmore. He lives in Sarasota, a fantastic guitarist and a Very nice guy. He plays these fabulous, fingerstyle chord/melody arrangements of Paul McCartney songs! ….. Beautiful Guitar arrangements. He had one of his top students with him, a graduate of New College but together they were incredible.”  – Martin Foulds, Director , St Pete’s Music Factory

Bruce KatzBruce Katz is a legendary keyboardist (Hammond B3 and piano) who has released 10 CDs as a leader and has appeared on over 70 other CDs with the likes of John Hammond, Delbert McClinton, Ronnie Earl, Butch Trucks, Duke Robillard, Little Milton, Joe Louis Walker, David “Fathead” Newman, and many, many others.

He has also had a strong musical connection with the Allman Brothers Band, having been a member of Gregg Allman’s band for six years (2007-2013), Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band (2010-2015), Butch Trucks’ Freight Train Band (2015-2017) and Les Brers. Bruce also occasionally toured with the Allman Brothers as well.  Jaimoe is a special guest on the new release, playing on several tunes

He is a four time BMA nominee (2008, 2009, 2010 and 2015) for the “Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year” award, which is the equivalent of the “Blues Grammys”. He was also nominated by Living Blues Magazine for “Outstanding Musician (Keyboard)” award in 2015.

His new CD, “Get Your Groove!” (American Showplace Music) has just been released and features many new original tunes, both vocal and instrumental.  It continues the evolution of the band’s music from the traditional Blues and “Soul-Jazz” it is already known for into the improvisational “jam blues” and roots music he has explored as a member of the various Allman Brothers “family bands.”

The Bruce Katz Band is an original, very exciting group of musicians that features an accessible, soulful approach to the blues and jam traditions.  The band features his virtuosic Hammond B3 and piano play-ing as well as Chris Vitarello’s brilliant guitar playing and vocals.  Based in Woodstock, NY, the band tours and performs at venues and festivals throughout the U.S. and Europe.

The Bruce Katz Band is:
Bruce Katz – Hammond B3 organ and piano
Aaron Lieberman – guitar/vocals
Ray Hangen – drums

"He can play jazz, blues, Bach, anything. Man, he’s a heavy!"
 GREGG ALLMAN

"The Bruce Katz Band’s music has the air of unflagging tradition yet it blurs the lines between genres. It is of itself and beyond itself at the same time. It’s like Mozart with a jazz trio playing at Junior’s Juke Joint on a Thursday night."   BLUES BISCUITS

"Bruce Katz and his men gave those present a concert they’ll remember a long time. Vitarello is an outstanding guitarist, with an astonishing technique and a broad creative range."  ROOTSTIME

"This man is as good as it gets. One of the greatest keyboard artists I’ve ever heard."  JOHN HAMMOND

"One of the most respected keyboardists on the blues circuit."  Wade Tatangelo, HERALD-TRIBUNE

Bruce Katz's music occupies a unique space where blues, soul/jazz, jam-band rock, and all aspects of Americana music collide into a style of original music all his own. As a performer, Bruce has been an in-demand sideman as well as leading his own band - playing and recording with many of the leading names in blues and roots music, appearing on over 70 albums with artists such as ‪Ronnie Earl, ‪John Hammond, ‪Delbert McClinton, ‪Gregg Allman, ‪Duke Robillard, ‪Joe Louis Walker, ‪Little Milton, ‪Maria Muldaur, ‪Jimmy Witherspoon, Paul Rishell, Mighty Sam McClain, ‪Debbie Davies, David “Fathead” Newman and many others.

Katz has a lengthy background in classical piano. After hearing a ‪Bessie Smith record at the age of ten, he started teaching himself blues and early jazz on the piano. Bruce then heard boogie-woogie and swing music and continued his musical journey into more aspects of jazz and American roots music. He attended Berklee College of Music in the mid-1970s, studying Composition and performance.

For the next fifteen years, Katz performed with many of the leading musicians in New England, and played “on the road” for long stretches of time. After a particularly long stint of touring in the late '80s with Barrence Whitfield and the Savages, Katz decided to come off the road and enrolled at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he earned a Master's degree in Jazz Performance. It was during this time that he conceived of and started writing music that became the Bruce Katz Band.

In 1992, Bruce met ‪Ronnie Earl, who soon invited him to join his band, The Broadcasters. During his nearly five-year stint with Earl, Katz toured the world and performed on six albums, writing and co- writing many of the band's tunes, such as "The Colour of Love," "Ice Cream Man," and "Hippology." The album “Grateful Heart” (Bullseye) won the Downbeat Critics Poll for Best Blues Album of 1996. The same year, Katz debuted his first solo album, "Crescent Crawl", on the AudioQuest label. He released "Transformation" the following year. Just before the release of "Mississippi Moan" in 1997, his third solo album, Katz left the Broadcasters to concentrate on a solo career. At that point, the Bruce Katz Band began touring the U.S. and Europe, and has been his ongoing focus, in addition to his many other projects. Bruce also played with ‪Duke Robillard(2001-02), ‪John Hammond (2005 – present), ‪Gregg Allman (2007-13) and many other high-profile roots, blues and rock performers, while continuing to tour and record with his own band.

In addition to performing, Katz teaches piano, Hammond organ and theory privately at his studio in West Shokan, NY. He also conducts Master Classes in Hammond B3 and Blues History, which he has done at various schools and music festivals worldwide. Formerly from Boston, Bruce has been based in Woodstock, NY since 2005.
