Florida’s Suncoast Blues Society Announces Winners of International Blues Challenge 2010 Local Competition
#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs
* From Florida’s Suncoast Blues Society's Newsleter, "Twelve Bar Rag" Nov/Dec 2010 Edition*
Florida’s Suncoast Blues Society Announces Winners of International Blues Challenge 2010 Local Competition
An enthusiastic audience filled the room at Whiskey Dick’s in Riverview, Florida on Sunday October 17, 2010 to enjoy a fantastic afternoon and evening of Blues and choose the artists who will represent the Suncoast Blues Society in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis February 1-5, 2011.
Participating bands were T. Alan & House of Trouble, Charlie Vegas & the New Blues Combo, Charlie Morris Band, Liz Pennock & Dr. Blues, Backwater Blues Band, Standback, Josh Lamkin & Automatic Heat, Lee Pons, Franc Robert & the Boxcar Tourists.
This year’s winners were chosen by audience ballot using the same scoring criteria as the IBC. The final points totals were extremely close but the assembled fans chose Lee Pons as the solo/duo and overall winner and Josh Lamkin & Automatic Heat as the band category winners. It was amazing to experience the exceptional talent level of each participating act and to realize that any of them would make us proud in Memphis. The competing bands are all identified in the accompanying photos. Be watching for news of shows the winners schedule to raise funds to help finance travel expenses to the IBC. And do yourself a favor by going out to support live Blues wherever any of the outstanding SBS member bands are playing.
SBS offers our special thanks to Gravy Williams at Backline Super Stars for providing the backline equipment and MCing the event and to Craig Munroe and Whiskey Dick’s for hosting the Challenge.

“Let the music embrace your SOUL!” That’s this year’s theme for the Gold Coast Jazz Society’s jazz concert series at the Amaturo Theater. You’ll embrace our evenings of great jazz and feel the soul of each and every musical artist.
The season starts on Wednesday, November 10 with the big band music of the Frank Derrick Big Band and Quintet. “The Beat Goes On” will feature the music of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich and more! Renowned drummer, Frank Derrick, has led a multifaceted national and international musical career. A virtuoso performer, composer, and educator, Frank has performed with numerous legends and artists including Redd Foxx, Stephanie Mills, Della Reese, Freda Payne, Eubie Blake, The Platters, Eartha Kitt, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, Dorothy Donegan, The Pointer Sisters, Ken Peplowski, Dakota Staton, Steve Allen, The Louis Armstrong Legacy Band, Donna Summer, Keely Smith, Maureen McGovern, Ann Hampton Callaway, Benny Carter, and has conducted on the concert stage for John Pizzarelli and Lanie Kazan. His many theatrical credits include Bubbling Brown Sugar, The Wiz, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Sophisticated Ladies, Big River, and Catskills. Frank has toured worldwide with Cab Calloway for ten years and was drummer for “The David Letterman Show” on NBC.
On Wednesday, December 8 you’ll enjoy The Shelly Berg Quartet with Ken Peplowski, Clarinet. Shelly Berg is “a technically astounding and aggressive pianist with unstoppable energy,” says Don Williamson, JazzReview.com Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Berg entered the Cleveland Institute of Music studying classical music at the age of six. He went on to earn Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in piano performance from the University of Houston School of Music. Berg has mostly devoted himself to being a music educator, but has also recorded critically acclaimed albums The Nearness of You (Arbors, 2009), Blackbird (Concord, 2005) and The Will (CARS, 2000). In 2006, he arranged most of the songs on the album entitled Ray Sings, Basie Swings (Concord). Shelly Berg was previously the McCoy/Sample Professor of Jazz Studies at the USC Thornton School of Music. He is currently Dean of the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.
Joining Shelly Berg will be jazz clarinetist, Ken Peplowski. "From my first time performing in public, I knew I wanted to play music for a living,” says Peplowski. The litany of musicians with whom Ken has collaborated reads like a who’s who of jazz… Mel Torme, Leon Redbone, Charlie Byrd, Peggy Lee, George Shearing, Madonna, Hank Jones, Dave Frishberg, Rosemary Clooney, Tom Harrell, James Moody, Cedar Walton, Houston Person, Steve Allen, Woody Allen & Erich Kunzel.
The Jeff Hamilton Trio will be featured on Wednesday, January 12. Originality is what versatile drummer Jeff Hamilton brings to the groups he performs with and is one of the reasons why he is constantly in demand. Jeff's recording, It's Hamilton Time (Lake Street Records), received enormous airplay while reaching #5 on the Gavin national jazz radio chart. His trio's second release, Jeff Hamilton Trio-LIVE! (MONS) was nominated by critics for best jazz recording in Germany in 1997. The trio's second release in 2000 on MONS was Hands On. Hamilton House-Live at Steamers. As well as recording and performing throughout the world, Jeff also teaches, arranges and composes. The Trio includes Jeff Hamilton on drums, Christoph Luty on bass and Tamir Hendleman on piano.
We’ll celebrate Valentine’s Day with jazz vocalist Jackie Ryan on February 9. Jackie will make her south Florida debut with her concert, This Heart of Mine, featuring her favorite love songs, Jazz and Latin gems from her last two #1 selling CDs. Jackie has been such a hit at London's famed Ronnie Scott's Club (where she has been a regular for eight years) that the owner, Pete King, asked Jackie to appear on Ronnie Scott's own prestigious Jazz House label. The London Evening Standard called her "one of the finest singers to perform at Ronnie's since Shirley Horn." Among the many jazz greats Jackie has sung, recorded, or toured with are: Clark Terry (at the Monterey Jazz Festival), Toots Thielemans, Barry Harris, Cyrus Chestnut, Terry Gibbs, Buddy DeFranco, Red Holloway, Eric Alexander, Jeremy Pelt, Ernie Watts, Roy McCurdy, Benny Green (at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival), Amina Figarova, Mike Wofford, Larry Vuckovich, Jon Mayer, and Jon Hendricks - just a few of the legends with whom she has shared the stage, and who sing her praises as well.
Back by popular demand, the exhilarating Bill Allred Classic Jazz Band will return on Wednesday, March 9 with the music of the big bands in From Basin Street to the Big Bands. Now in its 21st year, the band was born in Orlando by a group of former musicians of Walt Disney World and Rosie O’Gradys. Started essentially as a “kicks” band, they collected and played the arrangements of Matty Matlock and Billy Maxted. After performing at a few jazz festivals, they realized that there was a real market for their “little big band” type of sound. That was more than 20 years and 14 recordings ago.
Local jazz favorite Turk Mauro and our very own Eric Allison will be the featured artists on Wednesday, April 13 in Tenor Titans with members of the Gold Coast Jazz Society Band. Join these two sax titans as they perform jazz classics of Zoot Sims and Al Cohn, Sonny Stitt and Gene Ammons, and Johnny Griffin and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and more.
Wrapping up the season on Wednesday, May 11 will be another local favorite, jazz songstress extraordinaire Julie Davis, guitarist Kelly Dow and the Davis and Dow Jazz Band in an evening of steamin’ hot jazz - Hot House Swing. Their music has been called “Brazen excellence!” by Cadence Magazine. All About Jazz raves “Outstanding jazz voice and guitar.”
You won’t want to miss this exciting closing to our jazz season. Don’t miss a beat of fantastic toe-tappin’ jazz this season! Full Season and Jazz Sampler subscriptions are still available by calling the Gold Coast Jazz Society at 954-524-0805. Single tickets to all concerts are available through the Broward Center Box office at 954-462-0222 or online at www.browardcenter.org. Read more about the artists at http://www.goldcoastjazz.org/.

Miami Meets New Orleans at Chickie Wah Wah!
#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs
CAMEL-TOE THE LINE
*Picked up this note from this morning's OFF BEAT weekly email from New Orleans:
The Camel Toe Steppers Marching Society celebrates its 7th anniversary Friday night with a costume party at Chickie Wah Wah. "We are an all female krewe who formed on Halloween 2003," says Beth Manley. "We have our annual gathering, and there's usually a performance. Last year we performed 'Thriller.' This year it's a very tongue in cheek performance that goes well with Halloween and references some historical New Orleans elements. The theme is 'Let them eat cake.' We always have a great time."
The Stooges Brass Band, winners of last Saturday's Red Bull Street Kings contest under the Claiborne Avenue overpass, kick things off about 11:30 p.m. After the Lady Steppers stage show the Miami dance fusion group Locos Por Juana will keep the party rolling with the Stooges joining the fray for a New Orleans-Miami late night jam session.

His rousing performances are filled with amazing chops, humor, and a history of the acoustic guitar from blues to folk, traditional to classical and everywhere in between.
In addition to his concert performances and recording sessions, he is well-known for his “Meet the Artist Program” for primary, middle and high school students. In addition, his well received group seminar sessions for college music departments reflect Richard’s vision that music is an art of many spectrums.
Whether playing solo, conducting guitar seminars and school programs, or sharing the stage with fellow performers (including Leo Kottke, John Prine, Kenny G, John Hammond, America, Mike Cross and Tim May), Richard Gilewitz always creates a sparkle of mood mastery and wonderment.

Tim May began playing guitar and banjo at age eleven, and by thirteen he was performing at the Bluegrass Festival of the United State in Louisville, Kentucky.
In 1989, Tim founded Crucial Smith, a progressive acoustic bluegrass band based in Nashville, which produced three well-received CDs. In 2002 and 2003, Tim toured with recording artist
Patty Loveless promoting her smash hit bluegrass album Mountain Soul.
Tim was the solo guitarist on I’ll Fly Away, nominated for the 2006 Country Instrumental of the Year Grammy Award. Tim’s vocals can be heard on his first solo album, Find My Way Back and on A Bluegrass Tribute to Neil Young, a CD Tim’s produced for CMH Records, released in January 2008.
In addition to his phenomenal flatpicking skills, Tim May is also an accomplished singer and songwriter.

Patti Wicks Jazz Trio Dinner Show at Rinelli’s Yellowtail in Ft. Pierce Florida
#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs
Her1998 debut release, Room At the Top (Recycled Notes) was hailed by critics as “a revelation” and “an impressive first album.” Washington City Paper’s Joel E. Siegel declared: “Room At The Top establishes her as a world-class singer-pianist in the tradition of Nat Cole and Shirley Horn.”
In 2003, her gripping all-ballad album, Love Locked Out (MAXJAZZ), with bassist Keter Betts and drummer Joe LaBarbera, was released. Produced by Joel E. Siegel the CD received stellar reviews. Washington Post critic Mike Joyce stated: “ Love Locked Out deserves a place on the CD shelf right alongside Shirley Horn’s finest recordings. It’s that good.” Christopher Loudon, JazzTimes predicted: “It's a safe bet that Love Locked Out…will win her the national and international attention she's long deserved.”
In July, 2003, Patti made her debut concert tour in Italy with bassist Giovanni Sanguineti and drummer Giovanni Gullino. Italian audiences loved her. The trio played to packed houses and standing ovations. Her Livorno Jazz Festival concert review headline proclaimed: “Patti Wicks Holds The Audience Spellbound At Anfiteatro Jazz de Livorno.” Patti performs regularly in Italy with her bassist and drummer and has recorded 4 trio CDs and one duo release. Basic Feeling, (SFR) also featuring alto saxophonist Claudio Chiara, was released in 2005 to critical acclaim.
“extraordinary…a real gem,” wrote Fabio Francione, IL CITTADINO. Italian Sessions, (SFR),with special guest Gianni Basso was released in 2006; It’s A Good Day (Geco) the trio’s late 2007 release received the Italian Jazz Award for Best Jazz Album of 2008. Patti is honored to have been the first foreign artist ever to receive the award. In 2008 Claudio Chiara and Patti released a duo album Two For The Road (Music Center). Her latest release, Dedicated To… (Geco) 2009 with her trio, and special guest tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton. The CDs have all received accolades from jazz critics such as JazzJournal International, All About Jazz,
Cadence Magazine, The Palm Beach Post, All About Jazz Italia, Musica Jazz, and Japan’s Record Collector.
Considered one of the most arresting jazz artists performing today, New York reviewer Elizabeth Ahlfors wrote: “Wicks made a name for herself as a musical spellbinder and a compelling interpreter.” Dan Singer, InTune International (London) gets right to the point: “Prepare yourself for a performance that will knock your socks off!”
----------------------------
What The Critics Say:
“Like the much-missed Carmen McRae, Ms. Wicks… scrutinizes songs with a raised eyebrow. Words and phrases are dismantled with a wry deliberation and an improvisatory boldness…”
- Stephen Holden, NY Times
“Even if she didn’t sing a note, she’d still be a formidable keyboard presence.”
- Franklin Bruno, Time Out New York
-
“Wicks made a name for herself as a musical spellbinder and compelling interpreter. Her whiskey-and-cigarettes voice, succinct phrasing, imaginative piano musicianship combine to effortlessly deliver some outstanding music…. For mood and intimacy, this is a class act not to be missed.”
- Elizabeth Ahlfors, Cabaret Scenes Magazine
-
“The divine Patti Wicks, in splendid voice and accompanying herself on piano, enchanted an audience of almost one thousand at “Anfiteatro Jazz de Livorno,” as fans sat in quasi-religious silence throughout this long-awaited concert. Holding nothing back, Ms. Wicks created many unforgettable moments - backed up on stage by the excellent Giovanni Sanguineti on bass and Giovanni Gullino on drums – for which she received a standing ovation from her appreciative fans. Her finale was greeted with a full minute of applause, after which the trio performed an encore, energizing the Anfiteatro Jazz Piazza. An unforgettable evening!”
- LivornoJazz Live Concert Review: Livorno Jazz Festival
-
“Patti Wicks -- she of the deep, smoky voice and impeccable sense of swing -- gives those not already in the know a chance to discover a singer and pianist of distinction…. With Basic Feeling, Ms. Wicks has concocted an intoxicating blend of distilled emotions…”
-- Francesco Mazzotta - All Jazz, IL CORRIERE DELLA SERA
“Patti Wicks is an exquisite singer/pianist whose MAXJAZZ release, Love Locked Out is one of the finest ballad albums in recent times.”
- Scott Yanow
-
“A wicked ballad performer, Wicks’ voice and time can add an additional dimension to any song she sings… She makes Fisher and Segal’s “I Keep Going back to Joe’s” her “saloon” song in the same way Sinatra did with “One More For the Road.” On the upbeat side, Wicks’ playfully romps through the Kahn and Styne standard “A Beautiful Friendship….Wicks’ piano and voice blends the smoky and the heady in a solution of relaxed bliss.”
- C. Michael Bailey, All About Jazz CD Review: Italian Sessions
-
“Wicks' performances are like that book you can't put down, while the unattended bathtub is overflowing or the neglected oven burns the roast to a crisp.” - Alan Bargebuhr, CADENCE Magazine
-
“Last year, this reviewer had the privilege of attending one of Patti Wicks’ New York appearances. A group of friends, musicians and connoisseurs -- the great composer Sir Richard Rodney Bennett among them --were likewise in her thrall. Wicks was accompanied by her regular--and very musical-- bassist Linc Milliman, and the results were astounding: I believe the evening will remain indelible in my memory.”
- M. Tarabelli, Ancona Jazz (Italy)
-
“Her solos are imaginative and impressive in their construction; this is jazz piano playing of the very highest order.”
- Bruce Crowther, JazzJournal International
-
“You can judge an artist by the audience she gains and the response that she engenders. Well, on her opening night at the Lobby court in the Westin-LAX hotel, a quick look at the audience showed composers Lew Spence (“Nice ‘n’ Easy”), Jack Segal (“When Sunny Gets Blue”), Cabaret West president, Les Traub, fellow singers Rebecca Parris, Pinky Winters, Betty Bryant and bandleader/arranger Buddy Bregman just to cite a few happy patrons. Wicks was accompanied on her Los Angeles debut by two of LA’s finest: Bob Maize on bass and Paul Kreibich at the drums. Her piano playing would seem to be out of the Bill Evans’ school and her deep, smoky voice, a cross between Carmen McRae and Helen Merrill. But Wicks is her own person and cannot be typecast.. Her Los Angeles debut was most satisfying. I’m already eagerly awaiting her next CD and her next trip to Los Angeles.”
- Roger Crane, L.A. Jazz Scene
-
“Every once in a while a performer comes along who makes you ask, "Where have you been all my life?" With Patti Wicks, the thought crossed my mind.”

ABOUT PATTI WICKS
It’s not hard to understand why jazz pianist/vocalist Patti Wicks has consistently received high praise not only from jazz critics, but from her fans and fellow musicians as well. “Patti Wicks has brought the elusive art - of singing while accompanying oneself - to a new, high standard,” says singer/pianist/composer Bob Dorough. She is an outstanding jazz pianist with a highly personal style. “This is jazz piano playing of the very highest order.” declared Bruce Crowther, Jazz
Journal International. She’s also an excellent jazz singer with a distinctive sound. Known as a extraordinary interpreter, especially of ballads, she has that rare ability to get to the heart of a lyric, convey its meaning to her audience on a personal emotional level, connecting directly with each listener both in live performances and on her recordings. “She sings these songs with an attention to nuance and interpretive detail that's genuinely riveting.” wrote Alan Bargebuhr, Cadence Magazine.
Patti regularly performs at international jazz clubs, concerts and jazz festivals, including the Jazz Standard, the Metropolitan Room (NYC); Blues Alley (D.C.); the Royal Room at the Colony Hotel, Palm Beach, The Van Dyke, Heidi‘s Jazz Club, Cocoa Beach, (FL); The Jazz Corner, Hilton Head (SC),The Firefly, Ann Arbor (MI); Bake’s Place, Issaquah (WA); Blue Note (Milan), the Jazz Club Ferarra, (Ferrara), Alexanderplatz (Rome), Italy; concerts at Washington, D.C.’s Corcoran Gallery (with Bob Dorough); The Seasons, Yakima, WA, The Sanchez Concert Hall,
Pacifica, CA; in Florence, Genoa, Turin, Ancona, Livorno and La Spezia, Italy; jazz festivals: Cape May (NJ), Syracuse Jazz Festival: Jazz In The Square, Anguilla Jazz Festival (British West Indies); Livorno, La Spezia, Ancona, Euro-Jazz d’Vrea and Argo Jazz Festivals in Italy, the Jazz Cruise 2004 with Kristin Korb Trio, and 2007 as solo artist.
In his Ancona Jazz review, Massimo Tarabelli observed: “Her phrasing is behind the beat, and yet extremely fluid, and most effective in communicating a lyric. She has a killer sense of swing and a repertoire filled with illustrious standards and lesser-known lost gems.”
Patti has worked with jazz luminaries Clark Terry, Larry Coryell, Flip Phillips, Cecil Payne, Frank Morgan, Ira Sullivan; Pete Minger, Buddy DeFranco, Ben Tucker, Keter Betts, Italy‘s legendary tenor saxophonist Gianni Basso (who dubbed her “Lady Jazz”); accompanied renowned vocalists Anita O’Day, Sheila Jordan, Rebecca Parris, Roseanna Vitro, Giacomo Gates, and (at the legendary Village Vanguard), Carol Sloane.
She’s been Marian McPartland’s featured guest on the award-winning “Piano Jazz.” Her jazz profile is included in reviewer/author Scott Yanow‘s highlyregarded 2008 book, “The Jazz Singers: The Ultimate Guide,” A gifted composer, she has been a recipient of ASCAPLUS awards for her original jazz compositions. Patti’s 7 CDs have received superlative reviews from jazz critics worldwide.

“Every once in a while a performer comes along who makes you ask, "Where have you been all my life?" With Patti Wicks, the thought crossed my mind.”

“It should be noted that Patti has the rare ability to excel as a singer and as an instrumentalist, which talents place her in a very select category.”
