Ron Carter Concert Presented By South Florida JAZZ
February 14, 2009 - 8:00 p.m. - South Florida JAZZ welcomes the most revered bassist in jazz, RON CARTER, who appears with his quartet in concert. Also that evening, SFJ will exhibit paintings by Dr Ferdie Pacheco who will be in attendance at the event.
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – South Florida’s premier modern jazz organization is extremely delighted to feature a true melding of music and visual arts with Ron Carter in only his second Florida appearance as a bandleader. The first time was a much-heralded appearance at the 2003 Hollywood Jazz Festival, also produced by South Florida JAZZ.
This concert takes place at the 500-seat Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr Blvd in Davie 33314. Tickets are $35 ($25 for South Florida JAZZ members and $10 for students at any level with I.D.) and may be purchased from the AutoNation Box Office by calling 954.462.0222 in Broward County; also toll-free at 877-311-SHOW, as well as online at: southfloridajazz.org, the presenting organization’s official Website.
In conjunction with this concert, Dr Ferdie Pacheco, known to many as “the fight doctor” to Muhammad Ali, but also a celebrated painter, will exhibit pieces from his jazz art oeuvre in the foyer of the theater and will meet and greet concertgoers. Dr Pacheco’s rendering of Ghandi was chosen by the United Nations to grace the 2009 International Day of Nonviolence stamp to be printed by the US Postal Service.
Ron Carter
Undeniably, Ron Carter is the preeminent bass player of the second half of the 20th century and now beyond. His harmonic sophistication and dexterity on the acoustic bass sets him apart from every other practitioner in the history of jazz. In addition to the standard bass he has also employed the cello and the piccolo bass throughout his career.
The pursuit of music began in Detroit with the cello at age 10, but he earned Bachelor of Music and Masters degrees as a bassist. While still a student, he dazzled the jazz world with his prodigious ability. Among his early affiliations were dates with Chico Hamilton, Eric Dolphy, Cannonball Adderley, Thelonious Monk, and Art Farmer prior to joining Miles Davis’s second great quintet that also included Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams. The band toured and recorded exhaustively through the 1960s after which he left the band and became the most widely recorded bassist in jazz (more than 2,000 recordings!) in a multitude of settings including his own bands, of course.
Mr. Carter’s exploration has continued throughout his career, including chamber and orchestral work as well as scoring feature films and television shows. A multiple poll-winner as a player, he also enjoys an active teaching career at the university level.
The signature quartet that Ron Carter brings to “Jazz Impressions” features pianist Stephen Scott, Payton Crossley on drums, and Rolando Morales-Matos on percussion.
Funding for this organization is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.

WHO: BONNIE RAITT
WHAT: More than just a best-selling artist, respected guitarist, expressive singer, and accomplished songwriter, Bonnie Raitt has become an institution in American music. Exposure to the album Blues at Newport 1963 at age 14 had kindled her interest in blues and slide guitar, and between classes at Harvard she explored these and other styles in local coffeehouse gigs. Three years after entering college, Bonnie left to commit herself full-time to music, and shortly afterward found herself opening for surviving giants of the blues. Word spread quickly of the young redhaired blueswoman, her soulful, unaffected way of singing, and her uncanny insights into blues guitar. Over the next seven years she would record six albums. Three Grammy nominations followed in the 1980s. In between sessions, when not burning highways on tour with her band, she devoted herself to playing benefits and speaking out in support of an array of worthy causes, campaigning to stop the war in Central America; participating in the Sun City anti-apartheid project; performing at the historic 1980 No Nukes concerts at Madison Square Garden; co-founding MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy); and working for environmental protection and for the rights of women and Native Americans. Bonnie achieved new levels of popular and critical acclaim. She won four Grammy Awards in 1990—three for her Nick of Time album and one for her duet with John Lee Hooker on his breakthrough album, The Healer. Within weeks, Nick of Time shot to number one (it is now certified quintuple platinum). Luck of the Draw (1991, seven-times platinum) brought even more success, firing two hit singles— "Something to Talk About" and "I Can't Make You Love Me" —up the charts, and adding three more Grammys to her shelf. The double-platinum Longing in Their Hearts, released in 1994, featured the hit single "Love Sneakin' Up On You" and was honored with a Grammy for Best Pop Album. In March of 2000, Bonnie was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; this was followed by her welcome into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame in June 2001. The release of Souls Alike, her eighteenth album, marks yet another brave, exhilarating step in a legendary body of work.

WHO: HEART
WHAT: Heart capped off a banner year with a Billboard touring award, critical acclaim and even Christmas ringtones. Heart, the iconic rock band led by Ann and Nancy Wilson, continue to thrill audiences and prove themselves still very much in their creative prime with their latest U.S. tour. 3.
WHO: JOE COCKER
WHAT: Joe Cocker is one of the truly great rock voices of all time. America loved him from his first television appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. The press seized upon him. Life Magazine called Joe "The voice of all those blind criers and crazy beggars and maimed men who summon up a strength we'll never know to bawl out their souls in the streets." However, Joe wasn't singing in the streets. He was singing at all the major rock festivals of that summer, culminating in the filmed triumph of Woodstock before half a million people (a phenomenal rip-roaring testimony to Joe Cocker in his absolute prime). Of the ensuing "Mad Dogs and Englishmen” along with Leon Russell and a menagerie of musicians, managers, roadies, wives, girlfriends, hangers on, children, a spotted dog plus a film crew, Joe played forty-eight cities in fifty-six days, to rapturous receptions everywhere. In 1970, Joe sold $3 million worth of records in America alone. His first three albums went platinum and Playboy voted him number one vocalist in their annual jazz and rock poll. His duet with Jennifer Warnes on "Up Where We Belong", the theme from An Officer And A Gentleman, brought an appearance at the Oscars ceremony and a hit worldwide, including his first American number one. Joe Cocker is a survivor, a star and a rock legend. He has had hit records in the 1960's, 70s, 80, and 90s. Success has brought with it a grueling schedule of recording and touring but he has no plans to take it easy. "As long as being on stage is fun," says Joe, "as long as I enjoy that part and still get a buzz out of performing. Then I'll keep going out there."

UM to host its inaugural Global Business Forum, "Harnessing the Power of the Connected World"
#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TOP MUSIC BUSINESS AND MUSIC TECHNOLOGY EXECUTIVES TO PARTICIPATE IN THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI GLOBAL BUSINESS FORUM
Prominent Executives to Discuss Impact of the Connected World on the Music Industry
CORAL GABLES, Fla., January 14, 2009 -- The University of Miami will host its inaugural Global Business Forum, "Harnessing the Power of the Connected World," on January 15 and 16, 2009. The Global Business Forum, organized by the University of Miami School of Business Administration, will feature expert commentary from a wide range of industries from Finance to Health Care to Music. Expected to draw hundreds of attendees, the conference will focus on the challenges and opportunities offered by an increasingly interconnected world. The University of Miami Frost School of Music will host two panel sessions offered as part of the overall Global Business Forum. These sessions, which will also feature top executives from the music business and technology fields, will explore how increased connectivity impacts the music business and music technology areas.
"The Frost School established the first programs in Music Business and Entertainment Industries and Music Engineering as models for the nation," said Shelton G. Berg, dean of the Frost School of Music. "We were among the first to establish a record company, and the first to sign a major administration deal for a student-run music publishing company. As we continue to lead in incubating ideas for music and music technology, we have assembled a peerless group of panelists to discuss future trends. The Frost School sessions for the Global Business Forum promise to be important and engaging discussions." Dean Shelton G. Berg will facilitate the two music-related panel sessions.
The first panel discussion, "Harnessing Intellectual Property in a Connected World", will be co-moderated by Serona Elton, Assistant Professor of Music Business and Entertainment Industries at the Frost School of Music on Thursday, January 15 at 1:45 PM. The panel will feature John Kennedy, CEO of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), Eric Baptiste, Secretary-General of the Confederation Internationale des Societes d'Auteurs et Compositeurs (CISAC), and John Echevarria, Executive Vice-president of Operations for Latin America of Universal Music Group International. This panel, representing most of the stakeholder constituencies interested in music as intellectual property, will examine the challenges faced today in the global world and discuss the solutions of today and the potential solutions of tomorrow.
The second panel discussion, "Commercializing Music Technology in a Connected World", will be co-moderated by Corey I. Cheng, Director of the Music Engineering Technology Program at the Frost School of Music on Thursday, January 15 at 3:45 PM. The panel will include Bob Kohn, Chairman and CEO of RoyaltyShare Inc., Schuyler Quackenbush, Chair of MPEG Audio Subgroup and President of Audio Research Labs, and Rob Fuhlbrugge, Sr. Director, Advanced Development and Technology Sourcing for Shure Incorporated. The panelists will discuss how technology has changed radically in the past few decades, gaining limitless global reach through highly efficient methods for cataloging and distributing music. Panelists will also be asked to discuss what other music technologies lurk just around the corner, and what might be next “big thing” in music technology.

Tribute to Oscar Peterson - Gold Coast Jazz
#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs
Canada’s Top Jazz Pianist Pays Tribute to Oscar Peterson
Category: Music
Oliver Jones, Jazz Pianist featured in Tribute to Oscar Peterson
Fort Lauderdale, FL - To many, Oscar Peterson is the epitome of jazz piano. On January 14, one of Canada's foremost jazz pianists, Oliver Jones, will pay homage to the jazz legend in the jazz concert, Tribute to Oscar Peterson. Presented by the Gold Coast Jazz Society, the concert will take place at the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The show begins at 7:45 pm. Single tickets are $35 and $40 and are on sale through the Broward Center's AutoNation Box Office at 954-462-0222 or online at www.goldcoastjazz.org or www.browardcenter.org. A pre-concert Jazz Riff jazz talk will be given by radio personality Stu Grant at 7:00pm in the theater before the show.
Pianist Oliver Jones is one of Canada's finest musicians. His career intertwines with the proud history of jazz in his native Montreal, the thriving city that in its heyday also produced Oscar Peterson, Oliver's lifelong friend and continuing inspiration. Oliver was born and raised in Saint Henri, a predominantly working class area of Montreal, several blocks from Peterson. Young Oliver would sit on the Peterson porch, listening to the older boy practice. Oscar's sister, Daisy Peterson Sweeney, became his first piano teacher, with lessons continuing for the next twelve years. These lessons solidified young Jones' skills, which were already considerable; Oliver was performing publicly at age five, and by the time he had his first nightclub appearance, he was nine.
Jones moved to Puerto Rico where for sixteen years he served as musical director and pianist for the Jamaican singer Kenny Hamilton. In 1980, Oliver Jones returned to Montreal, determined to pursue jazz professionally. After a long stint performing at the Montreal jazz club, Biddle's, Jones began recording for Justin Time Records. His association with Justin Time produced an impressive catalogue of recordings whose sidemen are among the very finest in jazz. Have Fingers, Will Travel (1997) featured bass legend Ray Brown and drummer Jeff Hamilton. From Lush to Lively (1995) demonstrated Jones' unrivalled position as one of Canada's greatest gifts to the piano.
Oliver Jones' inspiration is not confined to the artistic community. He's also the proud recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr. award, celebrating his contributions to the Black Community in Canada and in his native Montreal. In 1993 he received the Order of Québec, the province's highest honour, and the next year he was awarded the Order of Canada, for "outstanding achievement in the arts." That same year, at the invitation of the Government of Canada, Jones toured several cities in China with bassist Dave Young and drummer Barry Elmes. For more information about the artist, go to www.justin-time.com/authors/oliverjones.
For more information about the Gold Coast Jazz Society go online to www.goldcoastjazz.org or call 954-524-0805. The Gold Coast Jazz Society is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of jazz music through a mainstage concert series, free community concerts, jazz education programs and other events. Blue Note Record's New CD & Tour
By Hugo Kugiya
Special to The Seattle Times
The record label marks its 70th year with an album, "Mosaic: A Celebration of Blue Note Records," and concert tour, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Moore Theatre, 1932 Second Ave., Seattle; $28-$35 (206-292-2787 or www.themoore.com). When Bill Charlap was a teenager in New York City — he was a music student at the school immortalized by the movie "Fame" — his best source of reference material was the public library near Lincoln Center, where he checked out jazz records by the musicians he emulated. More often than not, the records were Blue Note releases.By 2000, Charlap had become an accomplished jazz pianist and arranger, and when his own Blue Note Records album (the first of six) came out that year, the moment was just short of transcendent, like a ballplayer's first at-bat in Yankee Stadium."
I remember getting all those records from the library," said Charlap, 42, "and seeing that Blue Note Pac-Man on it, and all those jazz giants. So when I first signed with them and my album came out and it had that Blue Note [symbol] on it, I thought, 'Wow, I can't believe that's my name on there.' "
The legendary record label nearly synonymous with jazz is marking its 70th year with an ambitious album and concert tour by a combo led by Charlap. The group, which performs Thursday at the Moore Theatre, includes drummer Lewis Nash, bassist Peter Washington, trumpeter Nicholas Payton and saxophonists Ravi Coltrane (the son of jazz great and Blue Note artist John Coltrane) and Steve Wilson. The album, "Mosaic: A Celebration of Blue Note Records," attempts to do what seems impossible: to distill the 70 years of artists and albums into eight carefully chosen, reinvented songs.
The album represents the work of McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Cedar Walton, Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Thelonious Monk, Duke Pearson and Horace Silver. The group chose to record eight songs: "Search for Peace," "Dolphin Dance," "Inner Urge," "Little B's Poem," "Criss Cross," "Idle Moments," "The Outlaw," and the title track "Mosaic." Not all the songs represent an artist's best-known work, and many landmark songs were left out.

Freddie Hubbard Dies at Age 70
Hubbard (born Frederick DeWayne Hubbard in Indianapolis on April 7, 1938) was the youngest of six children in a musical household and first played the tonette and then the mellophone. Moving to New York City in 1958, when he was 20, Hubbard quickly became known as one of the important new jazz arrivals. In the early '70s, his career well-established, he moved to Los Angeles, settling in the San Fernando Valley. He received a Jazz Masters Award from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2006. Hubbard is survived by his wife, Briggie, and his son, Duane. Funeral services are pending. A memorial tribute in New York will be planned in the New Year.
