The Jazz Lovers’ and More Jazz Clubs of the Villages, Florida, announce the 9th annual Bob Washington Jazz Scholarship Award Program competition for jazz instrumentalists and vocalists who are high school seniors, college freshmen, or sophomores. We are keenly interested in those potential applicants who are determined to advance their contribution to the preservation and evolution of what is generally accepted, and defined, as “straight ahead” jazz music.

This year’s program will consist of eight awards, totaling $15,000 as follows:
First place:                     $ 3,500
Second place:                $ 3,000
Third place:                    $ 2,500
Fourth place:                 $ 2,000
Fifth place:                     $ 1,500
Sixth place:                    $ 1,000
Seventh place:              $    750
Eighth place:                $    750

The funds will be disbursed directly to the school or equipment provider as warranted after proper documentation has been completed. (Please see attachment.) The finals will be held on Sunday, April 28, 2019, at the Laurel Manor Recreation Center in The Villages. A rhythm section of professional musicians will be provided. Finalists will only be selected from CD’s to be submitted by the applicants. (Please see the attached application form.) While there are no specifications as to the diversity of the recorded material to be submitted, applicants should be aware that at least two selections of different tempos are desired. In addition, applications must be supplemented by at least one “Letter of Reference” from a credible individual attesting to the applicant’s musicianship, character, and seriousness of the intention to the continuation of jazz studies. The references may be forwarded separately. Applications must be received by midnight March 16, 2019.

The Bob Washington Jazz Scholarship Committee, representing nearly 1000 members of The Jazz Lovers’ and More Jazz Clubs of The Villages,  will appreciate sincerely your efforts to support this program by giving it wide dissemination among your students, or former students, who might qualify in accordance with the guidelines stated above, and on the attached pages.
