National Endowment for the Arts Announces the 2012 NEA Jazz Masters

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs #JazzClubs #BluesClubs

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) today announced the recipients of the 2012 NEA Jazz Masters Award—the nation’s highest honor in jazz. The five recipients will receive a one-time award of $25,000 and be publicly honored at the annual awards ceremony and concert, produced by Jazz at Lincoln Center at its home, Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City.

With this class, the NEA is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the NEA Jazz Masters Awards, which recognize outstanding musicians for their lifetime achievements and significant contributions to the development and performance of jazz.

The 2012 NEA Jazz Masters are:

Jack DeJohnette, Drummer, Keyboardist, Composer
(born in Chicago, IL; lives in Willow, NY)
Von Freeman, Saxophonist
(born in Chicago, IL; lives in Chicago, IL)
Charlie Haden, Bassist, Composer, Educator
(born in Shenandoah, IA; lives in Agoura Hills, CA)
Sheila Jordan,            Vocalist, Educator
(born in Detroit, MI; lives in Middleburgh, NY and New York, NY)
*Jimmy Owens, Educator, Trumpeter, Flugelhorn Player, Composer, Arranger
(born in Bronx, NY; lives in New York, NY)

*Jimmy Owens is the recipient of the 2012 A.B. Spellman NEA Jazz Masters Award for Jazz Advocacy.

“These artists represent the highest level of artistic mastery and we are proud to recognize their achievements,” said NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman. “Through their contributions, we have been challenged, enlightened, and charmed, and we thank them for devoting their careers to expanding and supporting their art forms.”

“Jazz is considered by many as one of America’s greatest cultural gifts to the world,” said Wayne S. Brown, NEA Director of Music and Opera. “These artists are being recognized for their extraordinary contribution to advancing the art form and for serving as mentors for a new generation of young aspiring jazz musicians.”

Each member of the 2012 NEA Jazz Masters class is a distinguished artist whose significant lifetime contributions have helped to enrich jazz and further the growth of the art form:

·         Widely regarded as one of the great drummers in modern jazz, Jack DeJohnette has a wide-ranging style that makes him a dynamic sideman and bandleader. His versatility on the drums is accented by DeJohnette’s additional accomplishments as a keyboardist: he studied classical piano for ten years before taking up drums.

·         Earle Lavon “Von” Freeman, Sr. is considered a founder of the “Chicago School” of jazz tenor saxophonists. With his individual sound, at once husky and melodic, he makes every song his own. As the Chicago Tribune has written of him, “For technical brilliance, musical intellect, harmonic sophistication, and improvisatory freedom, Von Freeman has few bebop-era peers.”

·         Lyrical and expressive on the bass, Charlie Haden has embraced a variety of musical genres, ranging from jazz to country to world music. His work as an educator led to the creation of the Jazz Studies program at California Institute of the Arts in 1982 where he focuses on the spirituality of improvisation.

·         Sheila Jordan is not only one of the premier singers in jazz, but she is known for her stimulating vocal workshops as well. A superb scat singer, she can just as easily reach the emotional depths of a ballad.

·         Jimmy Owens is a jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger, educator, and music education consultant. His involvement as an advocate regarding the rights of jazz artists led to the founding of the Jazz Musician's Emergency Fund, a program of the Jazz Foundation of America.

Full profiles of the 2012 NEA Jazz Masters are located on the NEA’s website.

The NEA Jazz Masters awards were announced in conjunction with the announcement of the NEA National Heritage Fellowships and NEA Opera Honors recipients. Please go to arts.gov for the list of these recipients.

For the January awards ceremony and concert, the Arts Endowment will again partner with Jazz at Lincoln Center to produce the event. The awards ceremony and concert will feature the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and other special guests in a program dedicated to the honorees’ lives and works and the program’s 30th anniversary.  Since 2003-04, the NEA and Jazz at Lincoln Center have partnered on collaborations including NEA Jazz in the Schools, a web-based curriculum designed for high school teachers and students to explore the history of jazz, integrating that story with the sweep of social, economic, and political developments in the United States. The free, cross-disciplinary curriculum is available online at neajazzintheschools.org.

From Stu Grant:
Music Lovers...
With the  recent sale of WXEL to Classical South Florida there are some impending changes going on, one of which is most likely Jazz Impressions with Stu Grant Saturday nights. Quality programming is their goal and I ask you what's more quality music than the Great American Song Book with Gershwin, Cole Porter, Ellington - America's true art form?
Let your voice be heard if you love the best in jazz and you want to see it stay the same.
You can send your sentiments to  GM Doug Evan's at  devans@classicalsouthflorida.org

South Florida Represented in Monterey Jazz Fest 2011 Next Gen Orchestra

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs #JazzClubs #BluesClubs

21 High School Musicians from California, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Toronto, Canada Comprise the Festival's Renowned National High School All-Star Big Band

The Monterey Jazz Festival is proud to announce members of the 2011 Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, the Festival's internationally-renowned high school all-star big band. Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2011, the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra features the best and brightest high school jazz musicians in the country.

Created in 1971 as a part of the Monterey Jazz Festival's continuing commitment to jazz education and selected through an application process during the Next Generation Jazz Festival each spring, former members of the Orchestra include pianists Benny Green and Patrice Rushen, bassist Larry Grenadier, drummer Chad Wackerman, saxophonists Joshua Redman, Donny McCaslin, Eric Marienthal, Dave Koz, trombonist Andy Martin, trumpeters Gilbert Castellanos, Ambrose Akinmusire, and big band leader Gordon Goodwin to name a few. In the past, the band has been under the leadership of Ladd McIntosh, Don Schamber, Benny Golson, Bill Berry, and many more. Now under the tutelage of Paul Contos, the renowned saxophonist and flautist who serves as the director of the Orchestra, the ensemble is dedicated to the study and performance of the most challenging big band literature available.

In 2011, there are three South Florida students in the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra:

Pompano Beach resident and saxophonist, Patrick Bartley
Boynton Beach resident and trumpeter, Christian Marrero
Miami resident and saxophonist, Rane Roatta.

Saxophonist Patrick Bartley, 18, is a graduate of the Dillard High School of the Arts in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He began performing on the clarinet at age 9, and switched to saxophone at age 12. Influenced by Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Kenny Garrett, and Michael Brecker, by the age of 15, Patrick had made two appearances at the Jazz in the Gardens Festival in Miami. He is multi-year member of the Florida All-County Concert Band (2004-2009) and Florida All-County Jazz Band (2007-2011); a two-year member of the Florida Youth Orchestra (2005-2006) and a 2011 Florida All-State Jazz Band member. Among the various accolades he has received are Outstanding Soloist Awards (2009-2011) and the Outstanding Doubler Award for 2010 from Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington Competition in New York City. Patrick is also a two-year member of the Grammy Jazz Ensemble (2010-2011) and was selected as lead alto of the band this year. In addition, he was selected to the 2010 Vail Jazz Workshop All-Stars, and has recorded with Melton Mustafa, Mulgrew Miller, Essiet Essiet, and Victor Lewis. He will be attending New York City’s Manhattan School of Music in the fall of 2011.

Trumpeter Christian Marrero, 17, is a senior at the Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach, Florida. He began performing on the trumpet at age 12, and has studied with Doug Michels of the Miami Sound Machine. Christian has been a member of the 2008 and 2009 Florida All-State Symphonic Band, 2010 Florida All-State Jazz Band, and 2011 Florida All-State Orchestra. He has also acted as the four-year principal trumpet for the Florida Youth Orchestra, winning their Lois Deicke Award. Touring Europe in 2008 with the Make a Wish Foundation Charity Band, he has also performed with the Dillard Center for the Arts Jazz Ensemble at the Essentially Ellington Jazz Competition in New York City, and at the Swing Central Jazz Competition in Savannah, Georgia, working with Wycliffe Gordon, Wynton and Jason Marsalis, Marcus Printup, Ted Nash, and many others. Selected to the GRAMMY Jazz Ensemble and Monterey’s Next Generation Jazz Orchestra in 2011, Christian has additionally won a number of scholarships from the Gold Coast Jazz Society. Christian performs around South Florida at weddings, grand openings, special events, bars, and private parties with his band, Ithad2bejazz.

Saxophonist Rane Roatta, 18, is a graduate of the New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida. He has studied with Matt Vashlishan, Antonio Hart, Tivon Pennicott, Troy Roberts, Joel Frahm, and many more. Rane was accepted into the Thelonious Monk Institute’s Signature Schools Program three years in a row, and had the privilege of joining Antonio Hart for a week-long Pittsburgh tour, and Bobby Watson for a week-long Detroit tour. He also participated in the Monk Institute’s Jazz in America 2011 All-Star Tour of Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Rane was a 2010 Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony participant, and will be attending the Brubeck Institute as a Fellow in August of 2011. In 2009 and 2010, Wynton Marsalis presented Rane with Outstanding Soloist Awards at the Essentially Ellington Competitions in New York City, and in 2011, Rane won a DownBeat Student Music Award for Outstanding Performance. Rane takes part in regular concerts with Ira Sullivan, and has performed with greats such as Ingrid Jensen, John Fedchock, Antonio Hart, Ed Calle, and many more.

“I’m looking forward to the gathering of this year’s band and the opportunity to spend time with such gifted young musicians,” says Dr. Rob Klevan, Education Director of the Monterey Jazz Festival. “Although our planned tour to Japan was postponed until 2012 due to the recent unfortunate circumstances taking place there, I think our 'West Coast' tour is going to be extremely exciting. It offers the Monterey Jazz Festival an opportunity to display the incredible talents of our Next Generation Jazz Orchestra to our friends in this region of the country. Equally exciting is the fact that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the ensemble and that we will have several 'special guest' artists performing with the band. It is going to be a smokin’ hot summer tour!”

Members will gather in Monterey in late July to prepare for the 11-day West Coast tour, beginning with a performance at the Carmel Bach Festival -- a historic first collaboration between the Bach Festival and the Monterey Jazz Festival in Carmel (July 24), where they will appear with tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano. The group will then perform in San Francisco (Yoshi’s, July 25); Seattle (Jazz Alley, July 26-27), Port Townsend, Washington (Centrum Jazz Festival, July 29-30); Monmouth, Oregon, (Mel Brown Jazz Camp, July 31); San Diego (Athenaeum Music & Arts Library with special guest trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos, August 1); and Los Angeles (Vitello’s Jazz Club, August 2).

The Next Generation Jazz Orchestra will also make their traditional Sunday appearance at the 54th Monterey Jazz Festival on September 18, 2011, with former band alumni and Artist-In-Residence Joshua Redman, Benny Green and Donny McCaslin sitting as special guests.

Tickets for the 54th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival September 16 - 18 in Monterey, California are available by phone at (925) 275-9255 and online at montereyjazzfestival.org.

Letters To NARAS: Rachel Faro Writes About The Latin Jazz Grammy

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs #JazzClubs #BluesClubs

This was written in response to the “restructuring” of The Grammy Awards, a move that included the elimination of the Latin Jazz Grammy.

"I’ve been a member of NARAS since 1982 and my connection with the Academy goes back to when I appeared on the Grammies as a teenage member of the LA cast of Hair. I’ve done just about everything one can do in the music business from recording as a major label artist for RCA to producing over thirty albums of all kinds of music from blues to world to jazz to New Age to salsa (three of which have received Grammy Nominations), to owning and operating an independent record label. I am one of the few women around who has produced so many albums and who has been her own boss at her own label.

Never have I experienced the Academy to be in so much danger of losing its relevance to those of us who are experienced recording professionals. Cutting out so many categories is one of the worst things to have happened to the Academy and the repercussions of this shall last for years to come. Instead of strengthening the Academy you have weakened it. "
