Tampa Jazz Club Presents James Suggs & Phil Provenzano Grps Sept 29, 2019

September's HOT ticket!

JAMES SUGGS QUINTET &
PHIL PROVENZANO JAZZ XPERIENCE

“JAZZ: EAST COAST/WEST COAST,”

SEPTEMBER 29 AT HCC/YBOR CITY

Two top-flight Bay Area bands, led by trumpeter James Suggs and flugelhorn player Phil Provenzano, will be featured in "Jazz: East Coast/West Coast," presented by the Tampa Jazz Club on Sunday, September 29 in the Mainstage Theatre at HCC/Ybor City. These 3:00 pm concerts are part of the HCC Visual & Performing Arts Series.

In the postwar, mid-century years, the jazz scenes in New York and Los Angeles produced distinctly different sounds, reflecting the very different cultures the musicians played in. The East Coast, with music of Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, and others will be represented by the James Suggs Quintet, featuring saxophonist Jeremy Carter, with pianist Jeremy Douglass, bassist Brandon Robertson, and drummer Paul Gavin. The band will also present music from Suggs' debut cd, "You're Gonna Hear from Me," which ranked in the Top 20 in national jazz radio airplay earlier this year.

Phil Provenzano and baritone saxophonist Dick Rumore (owner of the now-legendary Jazz Cellar, in the basement of Ybor Square) long ago formed the Jazz Xperience, devoted to the West Coast sound typified by the Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker Quartet and others. Their band will include pianist Patrick Bettison, bassist Billy Pillucere, and drummer Joe Bencomo. And you can be sure that East and West will meet up in a rousing finale featuring all of these great horn players together!

The Tampa Jazz Club is a non-profit organization that depends upon membership and audience support to keep performances like these happening. Upcoming shows at the Mainstage Theatre include an 85th Birthday Celebration for Kitty Daniels & Majid Shabazz on October 27, and a solo performance by the brilliant Brazilian guitarist, Diego Figueiredo, on December 8.

See you there!

North Central Florida Blues Society - Presenting Florida's BIG Blues Show in September!

So Much Talent w/
So Much Blues to
Celebrate and Share!

Sunday, September 15, 2019 ~ Doors 5:30pm
Bridget’s Birthday BLUZAPALOOZA w/
Tennessee Redemption
Featuring Brandon Santini & Jeff Jensen
Damon Fowler
The Shakedown
Featuring Michelle Banfield
Bridget Kelly Band

It's Bridget Kelly's birthday but it's you that get the present - live music from the best in national touring acts and rising local stars. Tennessee Redemption (Brandon Santini and Jeff Jensen, et al), Damon Fowler, The Bridget Kelly Band, and The Shakedown featuring Michelle Banfield.

Tennessee Redemption is a band that is committed to creating and performing real American roots music without boundaries or boxes. Brandon Santini and Jeff Jensen, each internationally recognized as great musicians in their respective solo careers, musically grew up on Beale Street in Memphis. They clocked a combined total of almost 1,000 concerts on Beale, about 400 of them together. Prolific harmonica from Santini, both clean and melodic or big, and the driven to wild Blues-based guitar antics of Jeff Jensen all on top of the very creative rhythm section of melodic bassist Bill Ruffino, powerhouse and ultra-musical David Green on drums and the creatively diverse Timo Arthur on guitar, this band just wants to write and play music that connects with people; something both Brandon and Jeff are very proud of. After years of talking about it, Brandon, Jeff, Timo, Bill and Dave formally established Tennessee Redemption in 2019; A name that means a lot to them, since most of the band members found some sort of personal redemption while living in Memphis, Tennessee.

On the strength of his hybrid of roots rock, blues, and sacred steel, Florida native Damon Fowler started wowing audiences with his musical exploits as a teenager, building a reputation as one of the hottest young players on the scene. Adding songwriting and vocal skills to his repertoire over the years has brought him many accolades, with critics extolling his originality and maturity as well as his technical guitar expertise. Creative Loafing magazine named him “Best Guitarist… And Slide Guitarist… and Lap Steel Player… And Dobro Player” in the Tampa area. Fowler’s guitar work has been compared to Johnny Winter and Jeff Beck, while his slide guitar has a hint of the late Duane Allman. He can play fiery guitar runs with the best of them, but it’s his lyrical work on lap steel and Dobro that makes him stand out among the legions of guitar heroes.

The Shakedown is a Blues band with heavy rock and soul influences fronted by singer Michelle Banfield and blessed with some fantastic instrumental talent including Frank Bougher on lead guitar and Randy Hensley on rhythm guitar and keys. The Shakedown delivers contemporary Blues about real, raw life with no sugar coating. Banfield is influenced by Nina Simone, Sharon Jones, Koko Taylor, and Danielle Nicole, among others, but is starting to make her own name known in the Blues community.

Inspired by classic and electric Blues, the Bridget Kelly Band has placed their unique stamp on the Blues genre, with high-energy live performances and a hybrid sound that mixes Texas and Memphis Blues with various southern Blues traditions. The powerful and sultry vocals of singer Bridget Kelly along with the incendiary lead guitar work of Tim Fik forge a signature hybrid sound that combines female urban Blues with riff-driven rockin’ Blues guitar. Also boasting a rock-solid rhythm section, their star continues to shine and rise.

SAMMY FIGUEROA & HIS LATIN JAZZ EXPLOSION w/ Wendy Pedersen in Season Finale at Faena Theater in Miami Beach

SAMMY FIGUEROA
& HIS LATIN JAZZ EXPLOSION
with special guest WENDY PEDERSEN
CELEBRATE THE BRILLIANCE OF SOUTH FLORIDA JAZZ
FINAL CONCERT OF THIS SEASON’S
FAENA SUMMER JAZZ SERIES

Tickets start at $45 and are available at www.FaenaTheater.com

The Third Annual Summer Jazz Series at Faena Miami Beach, in partnership with American AirlinesYamaha and WDNA-FM,  is proud to present Sammy Figueroa and his Latin Jazz Explosion with singer extraordinaire Wendy Pedersen on Wednesday September 18th, 2019 at 8 PM.  Sammy is also well-known as a radio personality on Miami’s WDNA-FM and will be co-hosting the evening with the series’ producer, Rachel Faro.

After many years as New York’s number one percussionist, playing with artists such as Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Chaka Khan, Mariah Carey, David Bowie and countless others Sammy Figueroa moved to South Florida where he was amazed to find a great treasure trove of high calibre players from all over the world, especially Latin America.  He put a band together and four albums, two Grammy® nominations and many tours later Sammy and the Explosion are recognized as one of the world’s greatest Latin jazz bands.

There are very few singers who can hold their own within the high energy virtuosity of the Latin Jazz Explosion.  Without a doubt Wendy Pedersen is one of them.  A highly accomplished vocalist, her high energy performances and warm emotional delivery has made her a favorite of South Florida audiences for years.  A graduate of UM’s Studio Music and Jazz Vocal Program she received her master’s degree in Jazz Vocal at FIU.  As one of South Florida’s top session singers she has appeared on albums by Shakira, Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, Arturo Sandoval, Alejandro Sanz, Julio Iglesias, Enrique Iglesias and many others.  After a career in pop music her heart found its way to jazz and it has felt like home ever since.

The band will be performing selections from their albums -- original compositions and arrangements created by Sammy’s Venezuelan pianist, Silvano Monasterios and his bassist, Gabriel Vivas, also from Venezuela.  Silvano, who also pays with Nestor Torres, Luisito Quintero and DJ extraordinaire Louie Vega, moved to New York several years ago where he has become a recording artist and popular performer in his own right.

Bassist/producer Gabriel Vivas tours throughout the world with Yanni when he’s not with Sammy and has recorded two albums of his own.  Sammy’s drummer, Ludwig Afonso, born in Cuba and raised in Miami, also plays with bassist Richard Bona and pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba.  Saxophonist John Michalak has been Sammy’s secret weapon for years -- when he’s not touring with Julio Iglesias, Ricky Martin or Gloria Estefan.  Young trumpet player Jason Charos will be joining Sammy and the band for this show.  Though still a student at UM, Jason is already attracting attention of the one the most exciting young players around.

The Faena’s annual Summer Jazz Series is produced and curated by three-time Grammy® nominated record producer Rachel Faro and hosted by the legendary twice Grammy® nominated percussionist and 88.9 FM WDNA radio host Sammy Figueroa.  The series is presented in South Florida’s most beautiful venue, the Faena TheatreTheater.  This sumptuous space, which evokes the grand style of European opera houses juxtaposed with the glamour of 1950’s Miami, is marked by gold-leaf and red velvet décor and a gorgeous chandelier.  It’s a perfect setting for a glamorous and intimate evening of music by the best emerging jazz artists of our time.
