An enjoyable Saturday evening of live jazz at Bistro at the Bijou in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, featuring guitarist Norman Mannella, bassist David Slack, and percussionist Martin Hodge.
The trio presented a thoughtfully balanced program of jazz standards, original compositions, and creative interpretations featuring genuine jazz improvisation. The musicians demonstrated excellent interplay, with a relaxed yet engaging performance perfectly suited to the restaurant's intimate setting.
The Bistro was busy with guests heading next door to the Bijou Theatre for the Rising Appalachia concert, adding to the evening's atmosphere. And when that show started, the Bistro took on much more of a listening room environment.
Excellent dinners, attentive service, and accommodating staff made the experience even more enjoyable. After dinner, our group was invited to move closer to the musicians for a better listening experience.
Charlie Boyer and Bess de Farber enjoyed the evening with good friends Billy and Terrin, who graciously hosted their stay in Knoxville while avoiding a Gulf Coast hurricane.
Good music, good company, and a venue that understands how live jazz complements the dining experience.
