This year marks the 28th year of the Gold Coast Jazz Society’s presentation of the jazz concert series in Fort Lauderdale.  Gold Coast Jazz will present an incredible array of jazz that is innovative and creative, with straight-ahead jazz and variations of old favorites.  International artists as well as outstanding local musicians are included in the series.  All concerts will be presented at the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW 5th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale and begin at 7:45pm.

UPCOMING SEASON PERFORMANCES

The Shelly Berg Trio will return on January 8 with special guest Veronica Swift.  One of the hottest young stars on the jazz scene today, the exciting and enchanting vocalist, Veronica Swift, joins forces with Shelly Berg for an evening of swinging jazz.   At the young age of 24, Veronica has already accumulated numerous acknowledgements of her talent, including 2nd place at the Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition.  She currently tours and records with the Emmet Cohen Trio, Benny Green Trio and Chris Botti, and will be one of the featured vocalists on the heralded 2020 Jazz Cruise.  Shelly Berg is an award winning pianist, arranger, composer, producer, and educator and is Dean of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music.  He’s “a whirlwind of motion on the piano bench who never sounds a dull note,” Says Bill Kohlhasse, LA Times.

The February 12 concert will feature the return of the acclaimed jazz guitarist and vocalist, John Pizzarelli and his trio.  As a recording artist, radio jazz host and touring artist, Pizzarelli is “reinvigorating the Great American Songbook and re-popularizing Jazz,” boasts the Boston Globe.  His concert will includes selections from his most recent CD, Centennial Reasons: 100 Year Salute to Nat King Cole.

On March 11, the Terell Stafford Quintet will be the featured artists presenting a concert in tribute to the music of Billy Strayhorn and Lee Morgan.  The NYC based trumpeter, Stafford has been hailed by McCoy Tyner as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player.”  Sidemen include Tim  Warfield/Tenor Sax, Bruce Barth/Piano, Nathan Pence/Bass and Billy Williams/Drums.

Our April 15 concert will feature the return of yet another Gold Coast Jazz favorite, jazz pianist and vocalist Tony DeSare.  This phenomenal jazz artist brings his fresh take on old school classics. He’s won critical acclaim for his three Billboard Top 10 jazz albums and for his exciting performances in jazz clubs, at Carnegie Hall, with symphony orchestras and in Las Vegas.  DeSare releases new recordings, videos of standards and new originals every few weeks on his YouTube channel, iTunes and Spotify.

The closing concert for the series on May 13 will feature the Nicki Parrott Trio.  The Trio includes Nicki Parrott on bass and vocals, the award-winning Italian jazz pianist Rossano Sportiello and drummer Ed Metz, Jr.  Ms. Parrott was Les Paul’s bassist and vocalist for over 10 years. In addition to performing at most of the world’s top jazz festivals, Nicki has performed with such jazz greats as Randy Brecker, Clark Terry, Jose Feliciano, Rebecca Paris, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Pizzarelli, Dick Hyman, Patti Labelle & the New York Pops Orchestra, Harry Allen, Michel Legrand, Marlena Shaw, Mike Stern, David Krakauer, Ken Peplowski, Ann Hampton Callaway, Scott Hamilton, Larry Carlton and Frank Vignola, to name a few.

Plaza LIVE Brings a Jazz Christmas to Orlando with Peter White December 12, 2019

If You Are Dreaming of a White
Christmas, Here's Your Concert!

Thursday, December 12, 2019 ~ 8pm
A Peter White Christmas w/
Euge Groove, Lindsey Webster
 and Vincent Ingala
at
425 North Bumby Avenue
Orlando, FL  32803

Make your list and check it twice! This holiday concert is more than just nice!! A Peter White Christmas with Euge Groove, Vincent Ingala, and Lindsey Webster is coming to town. Contemporary jazz lovers eagerly await this annual fun filled concert tour, which has packed fans into halls and arenas coast-to-coast year after year.
Peter White is an extraordinary and fluent acoustic guitarist whose skills are world-renowned. Over the years he has maintained a reputation as one of the most versatile and prolific acoustic guitarists on the contemporary jazz landscape. Armed with an unparalleled combination of lyricism and energy, he combines elements of jazz, pop and classical guitar to create a sound that is singular and at the same time accessible to a broad audience.
Euge Groove is a quadruple threat; the saxophonist, composer, producer, and DJ, has built an impressive career as a free spirit who remains true to his own artistic vision. It is no wonder the charismatic saxophonist has been able to record a string of #1 hits and garner a devoted following. Euge’s latest CD on Shanachie Records is Groove On(2017).
Vincent Ingala “I can vividly remember not being able to fall asleep waiting for Santa Clause to arrive on Christmas Eve. Somehow though, he always managed to get the job done while I was sleeping, and before I could catch him! I remember feeling extra special that Santa would place all of the gifts around the fireplace like a display, as opposed to them being wrapped under the Christmas tree. I would sneak downstairs multiple times with my flashlight to get a sneak peek before the sun would rise on Christmas morning! Memories such as these I will always continue to hold in my heart, they and are what makes Christmas a very magical time of the year.” Vincent’s latest release is Personal Touch (2018) on Shanachie Records.
Lindsey Webster was named Billboard’s Number One Smooth Jazz Artist of 2016 and 2017. Her most current release is Love Inside (2018) on Shanachie Records. “Nothing gets me more in the Christmas spirit than the music!” says Lindsey Webster. “The moment I start hearing Christmas carols I get that magical feeling that I had when I was a child...back when the thought of Santa traveling all around the world, delivering presents to all the children, was the most incredible and exciting task anyone had! As an adult, it has surely changed, but Christmas music always gets me right back into the spirit of it all.”

North Central Florida Blues Society Presents Roy Book Binder - A Musical Storyteller Who Has Become a Story In Himself

Roy's Stories -
He Was There!

December 14, 2019 ~ 8-11pm
w/ Paco
at
619 South Main Street
Gainesville, FL 32601

Roy Book Binder is the epitome of the singing, songwriting, storytelling Bluesman troubadour. Binder from the early sixties became a student and friend of the legendary Reverend Gary Davis, who he toured with in the late 1960s, and it was from these early days he became equally at home with Blues and ragtime.

At the age of 76, he is known to shift from open tunings to slide arrangements set to his original and sometimes quirky tongue-in-cheek compositions, with both traditional and self-styled licks, drawing on many musical influences. He combines his Blues with Hokum, Dixie Jazz licks, and Old Timey acoustic Hill Country music with ease. More than anything, however, his storytelling style is what he is most renowned for. The Sydney Morning Herald in Australia said “the stories are as good as the songs”. Binder is a master of the Piedmont style as well as Delta blues. He is also well known for his wry and autobiographical songs.

In the 1990s he often appeared with Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna), who recorded two of Roy’s songs. He’s been featured on a PBS special and interviewed by Terry Gross on “Fresh Air.”  Who else can say they were friends with the Rev. Gary Davis, Pink Anderson and Robert Lockwood? And toured with Arthur Big Boy Crudup, Hot Tuna, JJ Cale & Bonnie Raitt?  Roy borrowed from his heroes to become a distinct voice in the Blues and Folk music world. He has the stories, the licks, and the mystery of timeless music in his fingers.

Paco, who has been playing in Gainesville for many years, was an obvious choice to open for Roy. His style is difficult to categorize and uniquely his own. The most recurrent comment you’ll hear from guitar players in the audience is that he plays chops that you don’t hear from anybody else. His vocals have an ease and sincerity which makes him relatable to practically every audience. Although he plays many genres, he always seems most at home playing the Blues. He is currently the lead guitarist with Little Mike and the Tornadoes as well as the Blues duo Crosseyed Cat.

"I last saw Roy at the usually boisterous Suwannee Spring Reunion Festival and his ability to cast his spell was evident by the absolute silence of the hundreds of people that came to that stage to see and hear him. Amazing!" - Charlie Boyer, Jazz Blues Florida
