Jazz at the J presents four-time GRAMMY-nominated pedal steel guitarist Roosevelt “The Doctor” Collier, joined by David Chiverton on drums and T. Ray Mac on bass, bringing together three South Florida musicians with backgrounds spanning jazz, blues, gospel, funk, and contemporary music.
Raised in South Florida, Collier developed his distinctive approach to pedal and lap steel guitar through the sacred steel tradition, establishing his reputation with the family-based ensemble The Lee Boys. Known for his technical command, rapid-fire slide work, and ability to cross musical boundaries, he has performed alongside the Allman Brothers Band, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Los Lobos, Del McCoury Band, Buddy Guy, and numerous other prominent artists. His debut solo album, Exit 16 (2018), produced by Snarky Puppy's Michael League and released on GroundUP Music, brings together blues, gospel, rock, and funk. Collier also appears alongside Buddy Guy on “Somebody,” from Eric Gales' 2025 album A Tribute to LJK, honoring Gales' late brother, blues guitarist Little Jimmy King.
David Chiverton is a Miami-based drummer whose professional experience encompasses jazz, R&B, hip-hop, gospel, and contemporary music. A graduate of Florida International University, where he performed with the university's Big Band, Chiverton has worked with Arturo Sandoval, Ingrid Jensen, Nicole Henry, John Legend, and other notable artists. His international touring credits include Lauryn Hill, Jon Secada, and Donnie McClurkin. He has also recorded with Collier, including sessions for Collier's early solo project, and is associated with the Miami-based jazz-funk ensemble The Smoogies, appearing on their album People Music.
T. Ray Mac is a South Florida bassist and music professional whose work extends into music production, recording, and audio engineering. His production and engineering portfolio lists credits associated with Flo Rida, Rick Ross, and Jill Scott, reflecting experience across contemporary urban music styles. On bass, he completes the trio's rhythm section alongside Chiverton, supporting Collier's instrumental approach and the group's jazz, blues, and funk influences.
Together, Collier, Chiverton, and T. Ray Mac bring complementary musical backgrounds to Jazz at the J, connecting the sacred steel tradition with South Florida's contemporary jazz, blues, and funk scenes.
