Prepare for an evening of exuberant, hard-swinging jazz as the acclaimed Joe Alterman Trio takes the stage at Judson's Live!
Joe Alterman Trio makes their Judson’s Live debut with an evening of hard-swinging, joyful jazz led by one of today’s most talented pianists. Hailed by legends Ahmad Jamal, Ramsey Lewis and Les McCann, Joe brings timeless swing and bluesy grooves to every performance. An Atlanta-born pianist with a global résumé, he’s graced the stages of iconic venues including The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Birdland and Blue Note, earning praise for music that makes audiences smile and feel the spirit of jazz. Whether you’re a devoted jazz fan or a first-time listener, enjoy an evening of classic swing with modern spark.
Atlanta-born pianist, composer, and cultural curator Joe Alterman channels the timeless spirit of swing with youthful energy and a soulful, bluesy touch. His playing is an infectious celebration of the jazz tradition, earning him deep respect from the masters of the genre:
Ahmad Jamal called him "a very special artist."
Ramsey Lewis hailed his playing as "an inspiration" and "a joy to behold," calling his music "happy music with tasty meat on the bones."
Les McCann declared, "tiny but only in stature; as a man and musician, he is already a giant."
Monty Alexander noted, "He is a wonderful pianist whose playing brings smiles and good feelings to his listeners.”
With eight critically acclaimed albums, including the 2023 release Joe Alterman Plays Les McCann: Big Mo & Little Joe, Joe Alterman leads a trio that Downbeat Magazine describes as "hard-swinging."
From his deep groove and masterful technique to his infectious enthusiasm—which prompted Dick Cavett to say, “He fills a room with joy”—Alterman offers a performance that delights both seasoned jazz devotees and casual listeners alike. As legendary journalist Nat Hentoff observed, his music is about "making people smile and, if the room is right, dance."
Don't miss the chance to see a pianist who has graced stages at the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and Birdland, and who contributed to the Grammy-winning recording Faith – A Journey for All by Jimmy Carter.
