The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum marks two significant milestones in 2026—100 years since the construction of the historic Spady House and 25 years since the founding of the museum—with a special evening presentation titled "The Black American Story."
Set for Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Old School Square’s Vintage Gymnasium in Delray Beach, this program brings together music, storytelling, and discussion in a format designed to explore the depth, richness, resilience, and complexity of the Black American experience.
The performance features educator and historian Brian Knowles alongside acclaimed musicians Lafayette Gilchrist, Bashi Rose, and Emperor King Bishop | Solomon Selassie. Together, they present a call-and-response format in which spoken word and historical narrative are interpreted through live musical expression.
Knowles, founder of Power Builders and developer of the curriculum for the museum’s Black History Study program, guides the narrative portion of the evening. His storytelling provides the framework for musical responses by the ensemble, creating a continuous dialogue between history and sound.
Gilchrist, a Baltimore-based pianist and composer, is recognized for his work with saxophonist David Murray and for leading the New Volcanoes ensemble. Rose, founder of Konjur Collective, brings experience as a theater artist, filmmaker, and musician whose work has been presented at venues including the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Baltimore Museum of Art. Bishop, based in South Florida, is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and audio engineer whose work centers on interactive and exploratory performance.
“This year’s celebration reflects both our history and our future,” said Museum Director Charlene Farrington. “As we recognize these milestones, we are also celebrating the graduates of our second Black History Study program and continuing to share stories through music and conversation.”
Tickets are $75 per person, with sponsorship opportunities available. Additional event information is available at
