The Tampa Jazz Club and the New Tampa Performing Arts Center proudly present an extraordinary tribute to the eminent jazz trombonist and composer J.J. Johnson, celebrating his centennial in the second concert of the New Tampa Jazz Nights series. 🎺 On Monday, October 28, 2024, join The Tom Brantley Ensemble for an unforgettable evening that honors the legacy of J.J. Johnson, a true giant of jazz whose influence on the trombone is matched only by the innovations of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie in modern jazz.
Leading this stellar tribute is Tom Brantley, an acclaimed trombonist and dedicated professor at the University of South Florida, where he has inspired countless students over the past 25 years.
Brantley’s seven-piece ensemble features an impressive lineup of USF faculty, each bringing their own artistry and expertise to this historic celebration: Jack Wilkins - Saxophone, James Suggs - Trumpet, LaRue Nickelson - Guitar, Pablo Arencibia - Piano, Mark Neuenschwander - Bass, Dave Rudolph - Drums.
Each musician in this all-star band has achieved notable success, making this concert not just a tribute but a unique gathering of Tampa’s top jazz talent. From Johnson’s signature compositions to soulful improvisations, The Tom Brantley Ensemble will bring his groundbreaking works to life in the New Tampa Performing Arts Center’s stunning setting as it enters its second season.
