Trumpeter James Suggs opens Tampa Jazz Club's new season of shows at HC Ybor Mainstage with a tribute to the Great American Songbook master, George Gershwin. Expect to hear classics like "Summertime," "Embraceable You," and more as interpreted by the innovative trumpeter. James has been a galvanizing figure on the Tampa Bay jazz scene for a decade. His tributes to Miles Davis and Louis Armstrong have all been warmly received and performed multiple times. This is the first time he's played the Gershwin tribute in Tampa. Joining James will be Alejandro Arenas on bass, Patrick Bettison on keyboards, and Jean Bolduc on drums.

James Suggs began his musical journey at age nine and turned professional by his mid-teens in Northeast Ohio, earning a spot touring internationally with the Continental Singers. He earned his bachelor’s degree in jazz performance from Youngstown State University and, after working aboard cruise ships and performing with the Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey orchestras, spent eight years in Buenos Aires teaching and performing with jazz and Latin groups.

In 2018, he completed a Master of Music in jazz performance at the University of South Florida and joined its faculty, directing jazz ensembles and teaching trumpet. His 2019 debut album, You’re Gonna Hear From Me, recorded at the iconic Van Gelder Studio, reached #16 on the national jazz chart and gained global radio and airline playlist exposure.
