Trumpeter Carl Fischer and his Sunshine City Brass, with special guest Mike MacArthur, headline this March 2026 outing for the Tampa Jazz Club.
Fischer’s career spans some of the most recognized stages in contemporary music. He has been a featured trumpet player with Billy Joel since 2005 and began his professional journey with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra under Wynton Marsalis. A longtime associate of trumpet legend Maynard Ferguson, Fischer spent more than a dozen years in Ferguson’s orbit and went on to serve as musical director for the band. His résumé also includes work as music director and lead trumpeter for Blood, Sweat & Tears, along with collaborations with Chick Corea, Sting, Diana Ross, and Paul Simon.
Formed during the pandemic, Sunshine City Brass reflects Fischer’s affinity for bold brass writing and groove-driven arrangements, blending New Orleans–inspired rhythms with contemporary edge. The ensemble features Patrick Bettison on piano and harmonica, Tim George on bass, and Luis Alicea on drums—players who bring depth, versatility, and a tight rhythmic foundation to the group’s vibrant sound.
Adding to the evening is featured guest Mike MacArthur, whose early years performing with Maynard Ferguson and Dianne Schuur helped shape his commanding saxophone voice. In demand as both a sideman and recording artist, MacArthur’s experience in high-powered big band settings and small group projects alike makes him a natural fit for this high-energy brass-driven program.
Miles Davis Centennial
Birth of the Cool Tribute
In celebration of Miles Davis’ centennial year, the USF Jazztet presents a tribute to the landmark recording that shifted the direction of modern jazz. In 1949, shortly after departing Charlie Parker’s band, Davis joined forces with arranger Gil Evans and a forward-thinking ensemble to record what became known as Birth of the Cool.
Davis and Evans would later collaborate on several period-defining projects including Miles Ahead, Sketches of Spain, and Porgy and Bess. This centennial program honors that influential chapter in jazz history.
The nonet is led by trombonist Tom Brantley and features trumpet player John Castleman. The USF Faculty Jazztet also includes Aaron West (alto saxophone), Ross Strauser (baritone saxophone), Lyndsie Wilson (French horn), Phil Beatty (tuba), Pablo Arencibia (piano), Mark Neuenschwander (bass), and David Rudolph (drums).
Join the Tampa Jazz Club for this season finale celebrating the enduring legacy of one of jazz’s most influential recordings.
