Poetry of Jazz
at the
Broward Center for the Performing Arts
Amaturo Theater
201 SW 5th Ave., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312
December’s concert features jazz vocalist
Allan Harris in “Poetry of Jazz.” The Brooklyn-born, Harlem-based vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, and bandleader has been a defining voice in contemporary jazz for more than three decades. His baritone is immediately recognizable, and international critics consistently note his command of phrasing and emotional range. The
Miami Herald praised Harris as an artist graced with “the warmth of Tony Bennett, the bite and rhythmic sense of Sinatra, and the sly elegance of Nat ‘King’ Cole.” Harris has released more than a dozen albums, with projects such as
Cross That River — his acclaimed musical exploration of the African-American cowboy experience — earning awards, national tours, and educational programming across the United States. His recordings have also featured collaborations with notables including pianist Benny Green, bassist Ray Brown, and guitarist George Benson, each reinforcing his standing as a leading creative figure in the jazz vocal tradition.
As Harlem’s own modern-day troubadour, Harris draws on deep cultural and literary influences. “Poetry of Jazz” bridges the world of spoken thought and improvisation, weaving classic texts into musical form. Harris has taken poetry from Shakespeare, Langston Hughes, Shel Silverstein, and key voices of the Harlem Renaissance and set their rhythms inside the flexible pocket of jazz. His performance approach reflects a storyteller’s sensibility, shaped by his residencies at Harlem’s iconic clubs and his long-running affiliation with venues such as Smoke Jazz Club and Jazz at Lincoln Center programs. For this Fort Lauderdale appearance, Harris will be joined by a group of accomplished jazz musicians, bringing the poetry-driven repertoire into a full ensemble context for an evening of rich melody, narrative, and swing.
Personnel:
Allan Harris – vocals/guitar/songwriter/bandleader
John di Martino – piano
