FESTIVAL MIAMI 2010 CELEBRATES 27TH SEASON WITH SPECTACULAR, MUSICAL EXCELLENCE

Once again this fall, the community is invited to partake in all that Festival Miami has to offer — from world premieres and symphonic concerts to chamber music presentations and jazz performances. Expect the extraordinary and prepare to be amazed at Festival Miami 2010.

The 2010 season is scheduled to commence on October 8 and conclude on October 30. The 27th season of Festival Miami features 20 concerts over a four-week period. Each concert falls under one of four unique themes: Great Performances, Jazz and Beyond, Creative American Music, and Music of the Americas.

Week one includes performances by Latin dance artists Hansel Enrique Martinez and Raúl Alfonso (Hansel y Raúl), trumpeter and composer Gabriel Alegría, opera soprano Sandra Lopez with the Frost Symphony Orchestra and Frost Chorale, and jazz vocalist Sunny Wilkinson.

Festival Miami, the annual music festival that opens the South Florida arts season, provides superior and diverse musical programming each year while expanding academic opportunities and cultural enrichment to all of South Florida and its visitors. It’s a musical experience no one should miss.

Festival Miami has set a precedent over the last 26 years by presenting a month-long series that blends artistically and culturally diverse music with educational opportunities. The festival offers 20–30 concerts each season, providing people of all ages and income levels the chance to be enriched by live musical performances. It is unrivaled in its scope of musical presentations and is known throughout South Florida, the U.S., and the international community for its cultural contributions.

In its last two seasons, over 24,000 music patrons have attended Festival Miami performances. Since its inception over two decades ago, Festival Miami has presented performers from six continents. Past series have included concerts by artists from Argentina, Poland, Brazil, Russia, Mexico, Germany, Puerto Rico, China, France, and throughout the U.S.

The Festival’s concert series includes stellar guest artists, the Frost School’s widely known artist-faculty and student ensembles, and an educational mission that features children’s concerts, master classes, lectures, forums, and concerts that highlight historically significant events.

Frost Symphony Orchestra and Frost Chorale featuring Sandra Lopez, soprano — A Glorious Night of Strauss and Poulenc

Festival Miami opens with landmark works for orchestra and chorus by Richard Strauss and Francis Poulenc that reflect on life, death, the reawakening of faith, and transfiguration. The Frost Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Thomas Sleeper, and the Frost Chorale, conducted by Joshua Habermann, present Poulenc’s Gloria and Strauss’s Four Last Songs featuring soprano Sandra Lopez.

LATIN EXPLOSION
HANSEL Y RAÚL! The hottest act in Latin dance music brings their tropical dance music and contagious beat to Festival Miami.

Hansel Enrique Martinez and Raúl Alfonso began their professional careers with the world-famous Charanga ’76 as vocalists and co-founders. Their sophisticated tropical dance music emphasizes strings and woodwinds. In 1980 they formed the dynamic duo Hansel & Raúl, producing global hits like “María Teresa y Danilo” and “Con la Lengua Afuera,” seven Gold albums, and the double-Platinum La Magia. They continue to tour worldwide.

A musical salute to Frank Loesser, the Academy Award, Tony Award, and Pulitzer Prize–winning composer/lyricist of Guys and Dolls, The Most Happy Fella, and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Features an in-depth conversation with Jo Sullivan Loesser and special guests Susan Egan, Noah Racey, Ron Raines, and musical director Don Pippin. Hosted by Michael A. Kerker (ASCAP).

ESSENCE OF EXPRESSION
The inventive Sunny Wilkinson sings new and timeless favorites with the award-winning Frost Jazz Vocal 1 Ensemble

Jazz vocalist Sunny Wilkinson joins the 2010 DownBeat College Winners, the Frost Jazz Vocal 1 Ensemble, directed by Larry Lapin, for an evening of jazz interpretations of the Great American Songbook.
