Traveling Florida Blues band makes a stop at North End Soup Kitchen for a free performance and Cajun lunch
By Jessica Strachan The Flint Journal
February 18, 2010, 4:47PM

"What could be better than a steaming bowl of chicken gumbo on a cold February day?
A sizzling performance to go with it.

This morning, Catholic Charities' North End Soup Kitchen (NESK) hosted Bill Wharton, “The Sauce Boss,” and his gumbo-making band members Justin Headley (drummer) and Michael Wheeler (bass), to treat more than 150 locals to a Cajun-style lunch and Florida slide guitar blues performance.

This rocking blues-meets-gospel trio is based out of Pensacola, Fla., and travels around the nation performing their music, but between their gigs make stops at the local soup kitchens and homeless shelters for a different kind of show."

Miami Florida Jazz Radio Programming - Update from Robert “Bebob” Grabowski

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

A Second Open Letter to the Jazz Community:
February 23, 2010

Dear Friends,

It is, without a doubt, the most amazing turn out of public opinion I have ever witnessed – emails – tweets - facebook blogs - media blogs – and old fashioned phone calls – but regardless of the mediums, your message was heard loud and clear and I congratulate each of you for your clarity, passion, and commitment. It worked – WLRN will now have a real local oriented jazz DJ on five nights a week!!!!! Tracy Fields was chosen and I know she will play some really good things.

More importantly, the phenomena of the social media blitz that you created (thanks to everyone who kindly shared their email list for the cause!) allows me to prove what I have been saying for some time – that there really is a very large and diverse and dedicated jazz audience in South Florida. As an educator and a jazz musician, this is a very good thing for all of us to know – that this many people care. We need to remember this!

As to myself, I was honored to facilitate the start of it, but we have to give special kudos to Bob Weinberg (Sun Sentinel) and Erik Maza (Riptide 2.0 New Times) for keeping the story going and keeping everyone informed as to progress. Special thanks to Nicole Henry, who’s i-petition came a few days later and just may have been the icing on the cake that caused WLRN to shift their paradigm! I-petition – who would have thought? My personal thanks to everyone who blistered off an email, called, shared their concern with others, and made it real – thank you all!

On a personal note, I regret to inform you that I have had to resign my position at WLRN. Their idea of punishing me for speaking out was to indefinitely keep me off the air. I felt I had no option but to resign, and so I did last night. I thank all of our listeners for two incredible years of Monday Night Jazz there!

Now, some good news! I have joined the revolution of the 21st century and taken my Jazz Show ONLINE! I have become an educational podcaster and will put up a new one hour show every week – expect a lot of great music, local interviews and albums, and all at an easy website to listen to or download to your ipod to listen to later. It will be up on itunes itself by the end of the week. It will always be a free podcast with no advertising as well.

So welcome to my brand new podosphere:

bebob.podbean.com

Enjoy it and again, thank you for all you each have done for jazz and the South Florida Jazz Community! Keep Jazz live always!!!!!

Americana Woman Music Fest in Tallahassee FL March 19 & 20, 2010

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

The first annual Tallahassee Americana Woman Music Fest will be held March 19th and 20th. Nine acts from around the Southeast will be performing on three stages during this celebration of women artists in Americana music. All acts are either headlined by women, or the majority of the players in the band are women.

Americana music comes from the traditions of roots music in the United States. Its breadth and reach includes artists like Gram Parsons and Bob Dylan, Wilco and The Avett Brothers, Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett and The Band. The Americana sound is decidedly different than the more pop oriented radio formats of rock and contemporary country. A Grammy Award was presented in the Americana category for the first time this year, with Levon Helm winning the award.

The festival is comprised of three staged events over two days.

  • Friday Night, March 19, 7:00pm, at the American Legion Hall on Lake Ella. Five acts performing.

  • Saturday Day, March 20, 1:30 pm, at Bird’s Oyster on Bronough St. Girl’s and Guitars. Individual artists playing original music with their guitars in an in-the-round format.

  • Saturday Night, March 20, 7:00pm, at the American Legion. Five Acts performing.

A wristband for entry into all three events may be purchased for $15 at the venues, or
in advance at Gordon’s String Music or The Music Center.

Day-of-show, tickets for that day may be purchased at the venues for $10

Live Arts Florida Sets New Jazz Concert Date for 'An Evening with Copeland Davis & Friends'

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Wellington, FL - February 22, 2010 - On Saturday, March 13th, 2010, Live Arts Florida will host pianist Copeland Davis and friends at the new, 800 seat WCHS Theatre in Wellington, FL. The concert, which was originally planned to take place at 7:30pm on Sunday, February 28th has been reset to the new date at 8:00pm with doors opening at 7:15pm. This performance promises to be outstanding as Copeland Davis performs as a quintet format playing jazz standards and original compositions.

Whether it is solo piano, combo or teamed with a full orchestra, Copeland Davis resounds with a stage presence that makes every performance a magical musical experience. Combining his vast musical skills with a special brand of showmanship taught to him by the great Cholly Atkins, Davis electrifies audiences everywhere. A standing ovation was the audience response when Davis made his national TV debut on the Tonight Show; he's appeared twice on Good Morning America, and a variety of local shows. Davis has also appeared on numerous radio talk and personal TV interview shows in New York, Florida and various other states and has received notable reviews in Variety, The Miami Herald, The Boston Globe, The Sun-Sentinel, Palm Beach Post, New York Times and many other newspapers and magazines. He has had multiple television specials; one which was nominated for an Emmy Award.

As one music critic said, "He is a special person. He captivates the audience when he plays and he makes it fun. He has phenomenal technique on the piano. He combines mechanical proficiency with spontaneous artistic creativity. Davis can explore the possibilities of any number of tunes, while still remaining in the boundaries of tight musicianship."

For the last ten years, Copeland has performed with the Florida Sunshine Pops Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Joe Ferrer of Sunset Productions, Inc. To quote the world famous Richard Hayman, Orchestral Conductor and Arranger of the Sunshine Pops, "Copeland Davis is a resident of Florida and is an incredible pianist. He plays everything from classical to jazz. I always look forward to conducting his arrangements which are exciting and unique."

Copeland was appointed to the Boca Pops Orchestra as "Pianist-In-Residence for five years. To quote the Late Maestro Mark Azzolina, Orchestral Conductor of the Pops, "We've engaged Copeland Davis as pianist in residence because we feel he is one of America's foremost Symphonic Jazz Piano innovators. He not only has extensive training in Classical performance but his Jazz improvisational capability is in a class by itself." Copeland, also, received a one-term appointment as Instructor of Jazz Music History at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida, his alma mater, where he received a BFA degree in music composition and arranging.

Concert tickets may be purchased at the door, over the phone or online. Tickets can be purchased online by visiting http://www.tickets.liveartsfl.org/ or over the phone by calling 888.841.ARTS from 11am to 11pm Tickets to the concerts for adults are $24 for Orchestra and $28 for Mezzanine; Members $5 off. Sanborn, Wilson, Sample to Perform at Miami Gardens Florida "JAZZ IN THE GARDENS"

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

JAZZ LEGENDS
DAVID SANBORN, CASSANDRA WILSON & JOE SAMPLE
SET TO PERFORM AT THE 5TH ANNUAL “JAZZ IN THE GARDENS”

Highly Anticipated Music Festival – March 20th & 21st, 2010

MIAMI GARDENS, FL – Jazz legends, David Sanborn, Cassandra Wilson and Joe Sample are set to take the stage during the 5th Annual “Jazz in the Gardens” hosted by #1 rated, nationally syndicated radio personality Tom Joyner, Saturday, March 20th and Sunday, March 21st at Sun Life Stadium (formerly Dolphin Stadium), 2269 Dan Marino Blvd, Miami Gardens, Florida 33056. Internationally-known and well-respected, these jazz musicians are at the top of the genre, oftentimes pulling in audiences of over 6,000 on their own bill.

Sanborn, Wilson and Sample are just three of the artists on the star-studded line-up for the nearly sold-out festival. Other confirmed artists include the queen of R&B, Mary J. Blige; R&B crooner, Robin Thicke; Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter, John Legend; 90s R&B/pop super group, Boyz II Men; funk/R&B diva, Teena Marie; Grammy nominated R&B vocalist, Melanie Fiona; and R&B newcomer, K’Jon.

“Jazz is definitely alive and well at ‘Jazz in the Gardens’ in the form of Joe Sample, David Sanborn and Cassandra Wilson,” stated event producer, Leon Saunders of Saunders Entertainment Group. “We are absolutely thrilled to have these major acts headlining ‘Jazz in the Gardens’ and bringing their revolutionary jazz sound to our festival.”

Although some may find it strange to fuse together the musical styles of the aforementioned jazz legends with the funk of Teena Marie and the soul and R&B of John Legend, it’s one of the main draws of “Jazz in the Gardens.” It invites a plethora of musical styles to come together and form the kind of “super-concert” that can only be found in one of the most diverse and culturally-rich cities in the nation, Miami Gardens.

Jazz in the Gardens, a two-day weekend festival is now in its fifth year, has grown to be one of the top cultural events in South Florida. The jazz festival delivers a diverse mix of music genres that range from jazz, R&B, Caribbean and African sounds. Having something to offer all music aficionados at an affordable price, the 4th Annual Jazz in the Gardens shattered expected ticket sales, enjoying an attendance of almost 40,000, which was more than double the sales of the 2008 festival. In 2009, the Jazz in the Gardens crowd enjoyed the hip-hop flavor of Common, the beautiful neo-soul melodies of Erykah Badu, the smooth R&B of Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds and the crowd-stopping soul of Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, among other a-list artists.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

The iconic David Sanborn truly merits his position as a saxophonist, unrivaled as a player who straddles the pop and jazz worlds while commanding respect in both. In pop, he is justly famed for his standout solo on David Bowie’s 1975 hit “Young Americans” – one of many celebrated recording projects that evolved out of Sanborn’s live supporting roles. Indeed, his matchless tone has additionally been sought to bolster performances by the esteemed liked of Eric Clapton, The Eagles, The Rolling Stones, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Miles Davis, Bruce Springsteen and Steve Wonder – many of whom have likewise gone on to enlist Sanborn’s inimitable sax presence in the studio. Sanborn’s high visibility live and on record is only part of his story. His music has been heard in films, most notably on the Michael Kamen penned scores for the “Lethal Weapon” movies. His television work includes the theme for “Saturday Night Live,” sitting in regularly with the Late Night with David Letterman band, and hosting the dearly-remembered “Night Music.” The six-time Grammy winner has consistently recorded his own albums, and since his first album Taking Off from 1975, through his acclaimed Closer from 2005, he has rarely gone over two years between releases. Sanborn’s new album, Here and Gone, is the 23rd solo album of Sanborn’s extraordinary career and features guests such as Eric Clapton, Sam Moore and Joss Stone.

One of the many jazzmen who started out playing hard bop but went electric during the fusion era, Joe Sample was, in the late ‘50s, a founding member of the Jazz Crusaders along with trombonist, Wayne Henderson; tenor saxophonist, Wilton Felder; and drummer, Stix Hooper. Sample, a hard-swinging player who could handle chordal and modal/scalar improvisation equally well, stuck to the acoustic piano during the Crusaders’ early years – but would place greater emphasis on electric keyboards when the band turned to jazz-funk in the early ‘70s. Although Sample had recorded as a trio pianist on 1969’s obscure Fancy Dance, 1978’s Rainbow Seeker was often described as his first album as a leader. Since the early 1980’s, he has enjoyed a successful solo career and has guested on many recordings by other performers and groups, including Miles Davis, George Benson, Jimmy Witherspoon, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Steely Dan and The Supremes.

Defying categorization and convention, Cassandra Wilson never fails to surprise and inspire. Sexy, honey-velvet vocals wrapped around her own jazzy blue compositions or inventive interpretations of others’ material led TIME magazine to name her “America’s Best Singer” in recent years. Wilson’s journey can be traced back to Mississippi where she was raised by musician and educator parents. In the eighties, Wilson moved to New Orleans and performed with Earl Turbinton and Ellis Marsalis. Quite by accident, she was relocated to East Orange, New Jersey where she made the decision to take her chances on the New York jazz scene. Her development can be tracked through her discography. From the standards on Blue Skies to the Grammy-winning New Moon Daughter, to the combination of originals and interpretations played by a collection of Mississippi and New York musicians on both the 2001 release, Belly of the Sun, and 2003’s Glamoured, to the 2006 T-Bone Burnett produced Thunderbird, Cassandra continues to evolve. On her acclaimed 2009 release, Loverly, Wilson returns to a more stripped down jazz setting, and gives a tantalizing, rhythmically driven collection of jazz standards new luster.

Tickets are currently on sale and can be purchased at the Sun Life Stadium Box Office, www.jazzinthegardens.com or http://www.ticketmaster.com/. Ticket prices range anywhere from $55 for a one-day ticket to $125 for the two-day ticket; an amazing value given the fact that the concert is completely loaded with a star-studded line-up. Furthermore, the experience of the event goes beyond music, offering food, shopping and sophisticated pleasures.

Gold Coast Jazz Society Presents Tony DeSare Jazz Trio in Ft. Lauderdale Florida

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Jazz Singer Tony DeSare Celebrates the Music of Mercer
Fort Lauderdale, FL – 2009 marked the centennial of the renowned lyricist, Johnny Mercer. Mercer collaborated with some of the century’s greatest songwriters and wrote the lyrics to some of the most popular songs of the Great American Songbook. Some of Mercer’s best songs come alive as the jazz/singer/songwriter/pianist, Tony DeSare, performs with his jazz trio for the Gold Coast Jazz Society. The performance will occur on Wednesday, March 10 at the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The jazz show begins at 7:45 pm. Single tickets are $35 and $40 and student tickets are $12 with student ID. Purchase tickets through the Broward Center Box Office at 954-462-0222 or online at www.goldcoastjazz.org or www.browardcenter.org. A pre-concert Jazz Riff jazz talk will be given by WXEL FM radio personality, Stu Grant, at 7:00pm in the theater before the show. If you love the music of the swing and big band era, this is a show not to miss.

Singer, pianist and songwriter Tony DeSare -- whose third CD Radio Show was recently released by Telarc Records -- has won critical and popular acclaim from his concert performances throughout the United States as well as Australia, Japan and Hong Kong. In early 2009, launched an international tour with three weeks at the Algonquin Hotel’s Oak Room in New York, two weeks in London, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington DC, Seattle, St. Louis and Palm Beach. "With his dark hair, bright brown eyes and toothpaste smile that rarely fades," raved The New York Times, "DeSare is one of the most promising young male performers. He is a Sinatra acolyte in his early 30s who sings Prince as well as Johnny Mercer." According to USA Today, "DeSare belongs to a group of neo-traditional upstarts stretching from Harry Connick Jr, to Michael Bublé and Jamie Cullum. DeSare covers old and newer pop and jazz standards without smothering or over-thinking the material." His takes on classic standards and sophisticated original compositions have earned him a reputation as one of country’s hottest young singer/pianists. His sound is romantic, swinging and sensual, but what sets Tony apart is his ability to write original material that sounds fresh and at the same time blends seamlessly with the Great American Songbook. Tony has the capability to glide from a standard by George Gershwin to a contemporary classic by Bob Dylan or Phil Collins to one of his inventive original songs with ease. Go to www.tonydesare.com for more about this artist.

Tickets are still available for the March 10 performance. The Gold Coast Jazz Society is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of jazz music through a mainstage concert series, free community concerts, jazz education programs and other events. Go online www.goldcoastjazz.org for more information about the Gold Coast Jazz Society or call 954-524-0805.

WLRN in Miami Florida Decides to NOT Replace Jazz Host with Auto-programming - Tracy Fields to Return

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

Resolution has been reached in the controversy at WLRN in Miami. The following is from a posting today at the SunSentinel.

WLRN names new host for weeknight jazz broadcast
By Bob Weinberg, Special Correspon dent
1:16 p.m. EST, February 17, 2010

"Popular former WLRN jazz DJ Tracy Fields has been named host of the public radio station's weeknight jazz broadcast, replacing longtime jazz jock Len Pace, according to Peter J. Maerz, the station's programming and operations manager.

A few weeks ago, the prospects for local jazz programming on WLRN (91.3-FM) seemed grim. In a mass e-mail, part-time jazz host Bob "Bebob" Grabowski said he expected the station to significantly cut its decades-long commitment to locally generated jazz broadcasts. The move was expected to coincide with the retirement of Pace, whose last show airs Feb. 26."

Florida's Fort Lauderdale Riverwalk Blues & Music Festival Receives Coverage from SunSentinel

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

The SunSentinel posted this really great article by Bob Weinberg (The Real One) that covers the history of the festival and really does a great job of putting the event into a 'community' prespective. Be a part of that communty...come on out for some great music. That is all you have to do to show your support. Charlie

Music will flow when fest returns to the banks of New River.

By Bob Weinberg, Special Correspondent
11:36 a.m. EST, February 11, 2010

"Soon after the Riverwalk Blues & Music Festival began operating out of Bubier Park, event founder Don Cohen and business partner Sheldon Voss surveyed the bustling landscape from the Andrews Avenue Bridge. What had begun as an all-day party in the parking lot of Cohen's Musicians Exchange nightclub and music store had blossomed into a three-day, multi-stage affair, drawing ever-increasing audiences with legendary performers such as John Mayall, Buddy Guy and Albert Collins.

After a four-year hiatus, the event returns to the banks of the New River for its 21st edition, which takes place tonight through Sunday."

Blues musician 'Deacon' Fuller let audience set the mood
By Andrew Meacham, Times Staff Writer In Print: Friday, February 12, 2010

ST. PETERSBURG — "Another area blues legend has left the stage. Clinton "Deacon" Fuller, who rocked the Tampa Bay area playing an up-tempo style reminiscent of his Louisiana roots, died Feb. 3. He was 56 and had congestive heart failure.

His Deacon Fuller Band twice won recognition in the early 1990s from Creative Loafing as the area's best blues band. Mr. Fuller also played at music festivals all over the southeastern United States and in Europe, and opened for performers like the late Diamond Teeth Mary."

Bobby Carcasses Concert to be Presented by FUNDarte in Miami Florida

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

BOBBY CARCASSES IN CONCERT
Homage to an outstanding career that spans more than a half a century!
In Support of His Most Recent Independent Production: De La Habana a Nueva York -
-FUNDarte Begins Its new 2010 Caribbean Roots Series-

Miami, FL January 4th, 2010 – FUNDarte presents one of the most prodigious musicians, entertainers, and showmen of his generation, Cuban Legend and Jazz Master Bobby Carcassés, in an exclusive one night performance on Friday February 26th, at 8pm at the Manuel Artime Theater (900 SW 1st St, Little Havana, Miami).

The evening features some of the best Cuban musicians in today's Latin Jazz scene, including Dafnis Prieto, Yosvany Terry, Osmany Paredes, Yunior Terry, Magilee Alvarez and Marvin Diz. Bobby Carcasses has made an indelible contribution to Latin Jazz through his uniquely accented music and outstanding career. He is a renowned multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and composer and one of the leading exponents of contemporary Latin Jazz and the new sound of Cuban music coming from the island itself.

Whereas in the past he has been popularly known as the perfect Showman and Entertainer, Bobby is now considered the ultimate Guru of Afrocuban Jazz, offering inspiration to the up and coming generation of new Cuban Jazz musicians as many of the Best new talents have started their careers playing with Bobby’s band.

He was born on August 29th 1938 in Kingston Jamaica, where his Cuban grandfather worked as a Diplomat. Upon moving to Las Villas in Cuba at the age of four, Bobby grew up surrounded by Cuban rhytms, listening to Beny Moré, Conjunto Casino & Roberto Faz. He also acquired a Love for an eclectic spectrum of music from the Opera Star Enrico Carusso and Mexicos enigmatic Jorge Negrete to the Jazz Supremos Sarah Vaugahn, Buddy Rich and Stan Getz.

By the 1950s he was envolved with some of the best vocals quartets in Cuba and whilst playing for many years at The Tropicana the very center of Cuban Jazz at the time, he began to experiment with Bebop and Scat vocals. In the 60s he traveled to Europe, spending a year in Paris where he played with the Legendary Kenny Clarke and Bud Powell.

When he returned to Cuba he worked in the Teatro Musical where he met three of the Futures founders of the Legendary Irakere: Chucho Valdes, Carlos Emilio Morales and Paquito D’ Rivera.

Over the next ten years He played in the best night clubs in Havana as well as acting in Cuban cinema, Tv and essentially starting to form his own Jazz group.

In 1980 he organized the first Jazz Plaza Festival in Havana, envolving the Great Stars of Jazz such as Dizzy Gillespie, Ronnie Scott, Charlie Haden, Airto Moreira, Tania Maria, Steve Coleman and many others. Year after his own group was the focal point in these Festivals. he traveled to Canada, England, France and the USA where he performed with Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Patato Valdés and many other Greats from the Latin Jazz scene.

If Jazz Timbero (1998 Tumi Music UK) was both a projection of Bobby’s musical personality and a complex historical record of the different elements of Cuban music combined along the way with Jazz, Blues and World music. The power of Bobbys dynamic personality shows in his versatility.

Beginning as a Rumbero he had to master the three elements of Guaguancó: Song, Dance & Percussion, whilst his involvement in Jazz taught him to play countless instruments Piano, Bass, percussion Flugelhorn, as well as writing his own pieces.

The result of a lifetimes involvement in sport and Yoga are shown in the bizarre combination of raw Energy and Spiritual Equilibrium; his Greatest Sporting achievement is that of National high jump Champion in 1960. Hes also a Lover of Painting, Drawing and Literature and has exhibited his own work on many occasions around the world.

The word Timba has numerous meanings in Cuba; from a fiesta to a way of saying if something is right or not: la timba esta Buena or esta mala. It was originally used to refer to a meeting dedicated to al juego ilicito ( an illegal game). Cuban salsa has been christened as Timba by both the musicians themselves and the listening public. This new music renews Cuban rhythms and when mixed with Jazz produces something quite unique.

The degree of respect Bobby has attained by his contemporaries is shown by the list of Great musicians that took part in his recordings.

But without a doubt, the connecting thread is Bobbys voice with his electrifying use of Guaguancó, Rumbero Improvisations and Scat Vocals. Bobby is part of a tradition of singers who, within a Son, Guaracha or Bolero format integrate other influences such as Mambo or Guanguancó. The most famous example is Beny Moré, but Bobby also remembers Francisco Fellové who towards the end of the forties created a style of singing known as Scat which Bobby has developed to an outstanding degree.

Jazz Timbero is a declaration of principles: a tribute to Cuban rhythms and music and above all to the people of New York who have kept these elements alive and thriving throughout the world.

Jazz Timbero offers us music to renew our vitality, our smile and brings us a deeply emotive and sweet Caribbean flavor under the direction of the Great Bobby Carcassés, it maintains an equilibrium of diverse tensions thanks to the concentration and relaxation offered by the artists practice of Yoga, and exciting fusion of music through his extensive knowledge of music and a distinct sound formed by many years of performing, touring and producing live and recorded works. Bobby is an ancestral musician whose roots could be Nigeria, Dahomey or Andalusia, but who in fact comes from a long line starting from Havana to New York, possibly passing through Tibet along the way. About Armandinho, Dodô & Osmar
These three musicians have definitely made a huge impact on the “carnaval” of Brazil, considered to be the biggest street party in the world. Sixty years ago, Dodô and Osmar Macêdo developed what is known today as the “Trio Elétrico”, which consists of a stage and full sound and production set up on top of a truck, which then travels slowly through the streets of Salvador with thousands of revelers dancing in its wake. Today all the major stars of Brazilian music like Ivete Sangalo, Daniela Mercury, Chiclete com Banana and many others use the “Trio Elétrico” format for their parades. Armandinho, son of Osmar, is considered to be one of the greatest guitar players in the world and appears regularly in festivals all over Europe and the United States. He recently toured Brazil with jazz legend Stanley Jordan. Together with Dodô and Osmar, Armandinho developed the special electric guitar style of Bahia and even crafted unique instruments only played by them. The energy and talent that this group brings to Brazilian culture is undeniable. In 2007 President Lula gave them the National Medal of Cultural Merit. This year during the carnival celebrations in Bahia, Armandinho, Dodô and Osmar will be honored for their achievements and will receive special guests on their “Trio” like the legendary Gilberto Gil and many others. Following carnival, the group will come to South Florida for this special workshop and then will embark on their North American tour to cities like Los Angeles, San Jose, Houston and Calgary.

Don’t miss this amazing opportunity!

Larry Coryell & Dr. Lonnie Smith Concert to be Presented by South Florida JAZZ

#JazzBluesFlorida #jazz #blues #Florida #Concerts #Festivals #Clubs

South Florida JAZZ welcomes jazz masters LARRY CORYELL and DR LONNIE SMITH as they launch their guitar-organ-drums trio in familiar territory. Both artists are favorites of jazz lovers in the area and have special relationships to SFJ, but have not appeared together in South Florida. It should be thrilling.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – South Florida’s premier modern jazz organization is thrilled to feature two artists who have thrilled jazz audiences for years and now appear together in a new trio with drummer Marty Morell. This concert takes place at the 500-seat Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center on the Nova Southeastern University campus, 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr Blvd in Davie 33314. Tickets are $35 ($25 for South Florida JAZZ members and $10 for students of any age with I.D.) and may be purchased from the Broward Center Box Office by calling 954.462.0222 in Broward County; also toll-free at 877-311-SHOW, as well as online at: southfloridajazz.org, the presenting organization’s official Web site.

LARRY CORYELL-DR LONNIE SMITH TRIOIn the 14-year history of this jazz series, these two gentlemen are the most highly requested artists for repeat performance. Having them perform together, something they have only recently begun to do is a particular treat. Organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, of course, has a long history of collaboration with guitarist George Benson and uses guitar in his band’s typical configuration and has a great following among South Florida jazz fans. Legendary guitarist Larry Coryell can play anything with anyone, especially where swing is concerned. South Florida JAZZ audiences saw that in his four previous appearances for the organization.

Larry Coryell deserves a special place in the jazz history books. He brought a revolutionary sensibility to electric guitar playing in the 1960s; a hard-edged, cutting tone and phrasing that owed as much to blues, rock, and even country as it did to modern post-bop. A true eclectic blessed with impeccable technique, Larry Coryell always has sought to be himself. It is true that this has taken him all over the musical map, from Ravel to Rimsky-Korsakov to rock; not reflecting an identity crisis but an uninhibited musical appetite appropriate to his era. He has been comfortable in almost every style from decibel-heavy electric work to the most delicate, soothing, intricate lines on acoustic guitar. In between there is finger-spraining, fret board-busting, pyrotechnic virtuosity. This description only serves to introduce a complex and brilliant player, who has been at the vanguard of jazz innovation for four decades.

Dr Lonnie Smith, for many critics and fans, is the reigning king of the Hammond B3 organ. Some might say that this self-schooled innovator actually has been that for 40 years, ever since saxophonist Lou Donaldson and guitarist George Benson discovered him in his Buffalo, New York home clubs. Deeply immersed in gospel music as a child, Lonnie sang and played trumpet first before falling in love with the organ, using the records of Bill Doggett and Jimmy Smith as guideposts. His playing is absolutely blues-drenched and soulful with extraordinary time feel. Lonnie mainly digs deep into the pocket, but also can float over the time when appropriate. “The Turbanator” (JazzTimes magazine described him as a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a turban!) is one of the few mature jazz artists whose career has improved in recent years. A fixture in Fort Lauderdale for many years, he now lives in New York much of the time while keeping a busy national and international touring
schedule.

The trio is rounded out by drummer Marty Morell, well known for his historically important role in the Bill Evans Trio with bassist Eddie Gomez in the 1970s.

Funding for this organization is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.
