At 33 years old, Jose Ramirez is currently Latin America’s most popular Blues star and has played with some of the biggest names in the industry. The Jose Ramirez Band placed second at the 2020 International Blues Challenge in Memphis against over 230 bands from around the world.

Originally from Costa Rica and making Florida's Tampa Bay area his first destination before moving north, Jose recently signed a contract with world-famous Blues label Delmark Records in Chicago for the release of his second studio album, the first-ever Latin American to sign with the renowned record company.

Jose was recently nominated for a Blues Music Award in 2021 for his debut album “Here I Come”, produced by blues guitar legend Anson Funderburgh. In the past couple of years, Jose has traveled the world playing the blues. His three European tours included more than 65 concerts in England, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Portugal and Belgium.

Sheba the Mississippi Queen & the Bluesman were International Blues Challenge semifinalists. Sheba’s influences are Billy Holiday, Etta James, Tina Turner, Aretha, and Big Mama Thornton, and she has performed at Springing the Blues, the Coral Gables Blues Festival, and the Long Island Blues Festival. The Bluesmen is led by guitarist Keith Caton and includes top musicians steeped in the Blues that have played alongside Bo Diddley and other greats.

The North Central Florida Blues Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, cultivation, nurturing and promotion of Blues Music. The Society also hosts monthly electric and acoustic jams. See website for more information and membership.

Jazz & Blues Florida On The Road - Memorial Day with Big Al & The Heavyweights at Felix's Lakeside in New Orleans

Yesterday took me a couple miles east on the Lake Pontchatrain shoreline to Felix's Restaurant & Oyster Bar where Al Lauro / Big Al and the Heavyweights were mixing it for the big mix of people out and about for the holiday. Their repertoire provided something for everyone - the boater families, the party people, the slow dancers, and even for those outside the building dancing in the rain when the storm blew through. With four vocalists in the quartet, and each superb on their instruments the group has a groove that is definitely never a rut. Even the staff was smiling, as over-burdened as they were with delivering all those big trays of crawfish and oysters to capacity-filled tables.

Just in from a Florida run, Big Al and the guys had the same effect on the crowd at the Bradfordville Blues Club this past Saturday night. Check out the vids of that packed house dancing the night away, albeit for more of a solid blues crowd there. They will be back in Florida for short run in June, and back for a state-wide tour in October which might include their debut performance at The Funky Biscuit in Boca Raton. THAT will be a party! Well, they are a party whenever and wherever they play for fun people. And they never stop finding the places to do just that in!

MONDAY, May 30, 2022 ~ 4-8PM
Big Al and the Heavyweights

Mark Parsons – bass/vocals

1st destination of the day...

Huh.

Takes a lickin' keeps on tickin'...

Rock, rock, rockin' the rock-a-fellas!

In New Orleans, even the rain loves the sun.

It's raining.  Those are sailboats. This is Lake Ponchatrain.  There's a bridge out there.... Sing it for us Shaun...

Jazz Blues Florida On The Road - Josh Garrett Solo at Lumiere Blues & Jazz Bistro in Houma LA, Sunday, May 29, 2022

GOOD live music!

SUNDAY, MAY 29, 2022 ~ 11AM-2PM
JOSH GARRETT
Lumiere Blues & Jazz Bistro
7913 W Main St. Downtown
Houma, LA 70360
985.262.0757

Josh Garrett

Yesterday went out to Houma to see Josh Garrett provide the music at brunch at the Lumiere Blues & Jazz Bistro.

First time hearing Josh solo. And he totally owns it. Clarity in guitar work and matching vocals with a controlled volume well suited to the songs and venue. He has a full-on band gig later today and it would be great to hear both versions in the same day, but duty calls. Not sure how many years ago I first heard Josh - on the stage of the V.O.W. Allstars closing set when the event was downtown I think. And I knew right away that if some young guy was a STANDOUT PLAYER on THAT stage, I needed to pay attention, and Josh has never proved me wrong. He almost a regular in Florida's panhandle at Paradise Bar and Grill and he really needs to get downstate more to share his bayou-bent blues.

Did you know I used to work (AKA - Offshore Trash) out there in the Houma area? Early 80s while going through my 1st big learning curve about life's lessons in the differences between expectations, trust and acceptance. Making maps of the bottom of the Gulf for Western Geophysical out of Houston. Aransas Pass to Pensacola was our shooting territory. Go to Houma, turn south and go to where the road ended at Fourchon. That was our usual port. Spent Christmas one year onboard docked at the Morgan City Bridge. Juke box dancin' with Lousiana Lou, the Christmas lights of ambulances and police cruisers as they cleaned up the results of someone's header off the river bridge onto the dock next to the ship... and more I can't put down here. THAT all is a book in itself.... Some wild crazy-azz days, and I'm still here. Go figure.
Here's all the pics and vids...
Class joint. Well planned and excuted. Atmoshere, service, food quality - all big city quality with a easier vibe. NOTHING like this existed in Houma 40 years ago!

Hope skip and a swampy jump through the bayou country...

A dock and swamp is all I remember of this place. And those twelve hour crew & provdision turn-arounds was WAY more than enough time to get to Houma and waste a week's pay!

Crossing muddy waters....

As Mary G. put it... "from Thibodaux to Raceland..."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIQgzCai3EQ

I know you've heard about it... even if you've never been here....
She sang it like no one else ever, but Roy Orbison wrote it....

Inside and out...

View from riverside patio deck

Spacious and great acoustics for Josh's solo today.

I had two of them. Both EXCELLENT - prompt, to-order,
and served with a big smile!

I like this one. Almost, kinda, captures the moment...

3-egg, biscuit, bacon, hashers, grits and shrimp. How could
you possibly go wrong with starting the day this way?
Sorry
Spike, no milk for me... I'll eat some more cheese later...

Josh & Misty. Super nice people. Thanks for the music and chat.
Be sure to bring her to Florida on your next tour! Soon, please.

When I grow up , I'm going to get talent, too... Ha!

Another stop along the way...
