2021 Digital Season Schedule Announced

Jan 16, 2021 • 8:00 p.m. EST
John Daversa Quintet

The John Daversa Quintet plays "CUARENTENA: With Family at Home," magical music reflecting the times that the world currently finds itself.

South Florida JAZZ, the premier presenter of modern jazz in the region, goes virtual this season with a livestream performance by multiple Grammy-awarded trumpeter, composer and arranger John Daversa, accompanied by literal instrumental all-stars: internationally renowned pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, virtuoso bassist Carlo De Rosa; drummer extraordinaire Dafnis Prieto, and veteran, stellar percussionist Sammy Figueroa. The band will feature original , nearly magical compositions, predominantly penned by Mr. Daversa, reflecting the times we currently live in. The concert is titled "CUARENTENA: With Family at Home."

February 20, 2021 • 8:00 p.m. EST
Joe Locke Subtle Disguise

Vibist Joe Locke showcases his newest band, Subtle Disguise,
featuring mostly original compositions for the project/band.

Vibraphonist Joe Locke is a six-time recipient of the Jazz Journalists Association’s “Mallet Instrumentalist of the Year” award and has won numerous further accolades and polls. In 2016 he was honored with induction into the Music Hall of Fame in his hometown, Rochester, New York. He remains an active clinician and educator both in the United States and in Europe, and holds the prestigious title of Honorary Associate of London’s Royal Academy of Music. Mr. Locke is a prolific composer and has recorded mostly as leader, but also with stellar artists around the globe.

ARTISTIC PERSONNEL
Joe Locke – vibraphone
Jim Ridl – piano and keyboards
Lorin Cohen – acoustic and electric bass
Samvel Sarkisyan – drums

March 20, 2021 • 8:00 PM EDT
Dan Tepfer (Solo Piano)
“Bach to the Future"

The astonishing pianistic and technological talent of Dan Tepfer will be on display as he follows the arc of J.S. Bach and his impact on modern jazz in “Bach to the Future,” an incredible journey.

Dan Tepfer is one of this generation’s most extraordinary and brilliant talents, earning an international reputation as a pianist-composer and AI innovator with wide-ranging ambition and individualism. By looking at his tour schedule, it’s impossible to predict what Dan will do next. He has performed around the world with some of the leading lights in jazz and classical music, spending a decade as sidekick to the late, legendary alto saxophonist, Lee Konitz, and then becoming a favored accompanist to soprano RenĂ©e Fleming.

Whether it is his extraordinary original and improvisational expressions of Bach’s Goldberg Variations/ Variations or the ingenious intersection between science and art in Natural Machines, Dan Tepfer unfailingly thrills and astounds.

April 17, 2021 • 8:00 p.m. EDT
David Kikoski Quartet
featuring Eric Alexander

The New Jersey pianist has had a long career as one of the area’s swingingest pianists. His band features NY all-stars with renowned tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, bassist Joe Martin and the incomparable drummer, Billy Hart.

One evening on a gig, pianist David Kikoski was told by his saxophonist, “man you are in ‘K-Mode’ tonight.” David loved the reference immediately. Subsequently, that sobriquet evolved into “Kayemode” as it became not just the title of a 2016 album, but also the name of his band. It is true that Kikoski can frequently get into that hard-core beast-like state of effervescent, muscular swing.

On this date, along with preferred rhythm section mates Joe Martin on bass and the splendid, venerable drummer, Billy Hart, is tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, who has been a South Florida JAZZ favorite for several years, now making his fourth appearance. Alexander is one of the most respected and also prolific artists on the jazz scene.

Kurt Elling this Saturday at JazzAid Live from Pinecrest Gardens w/ Pay-Per-View Worldwide Viewing

Kurt Elling
at
JazzAid LIVE FROM THE BANYAN BOWL

Saturday, December 12, 2020
Grammy Award Winning Jazz Vocalist
Kurt Elling

Renowned for his singular combination of robust swing and poetic insight, GRAMMY winner Kurt Elling has secured his place among the world’s foremost jazz vocalists. Declared “the standout male vocalist of our time” by The New York Times, Elling has garnered unprecedented accolades, including a fourteen-year run atop the DownBeat Critics Poll, a dozen GRAMMY nominations, and eight Jazz Journalists Association awards for “Male Singer of the Year.”

Elling’s voice is instantly recognizable, embracing listeners with his warm, rich baritone and navigating the full span of his four-octave range as a virtuoso instrumentalist and a compelling storyteller. Whether transforming timeless standards or crafting his own enthralling originals, Elling balances elegant lyricism and technical mastery with wry humor, emotional depth, and keen observations into the human condition.

“Elling combines authenticity with stunning originality,” is how The Wall Street Journal describes his talents, while The Guardian has called him “a kind of Sinatra with superpowers.” The Toronto Star has gone so far as to say that “Kurt Elling is the closest jazz will ever get to having its own saint,” while The Guardian makes up one voice in a chorus calling him “one of jazz’s all-time great vocalists.”

Elling’s most recent release, The Questions, vividly exemplifies his ability to respond to the world around him with both urgent immediacy and a unique perspective. Co-produced by NEA Jazz Master and acclaimed saxophonist Branford Marsalis, the album searches for answers to the culture’s most divisive social, political and spiritual issues in the songs of Bob Dylan, Carla Bley and Leonard Bernstein, and the poetry of Rumi and Wallace Stevens. Elling had previously joined Marsalis and his long-running Quartet for 2016’s GRAMMY-nominated Upward Spiral, which All About Jazz hailed as “suffused with graciousness, beauty, and, on occasion, heartbreak.”

Taking the long view of Elling’s audacious and richly varied career, the Washington Post lauded, “Since the mid-1990s, no singer in jazz has been as daring, dynamic or interesting as Kurt Elling. With his soaring vocal flights, his edgy lyrics and sense of being on a musical mission, he has come to embody the creative spirit in jazz.”

Adrian Cunningham & La Lucha • New Holiday Classics Release Now Available

Brighten Your Holiday
Moments with Fresh Songs
with that Familiar Holiday Magic!

Arbors Records presents

Adrian Cunningham & La Lucha
New Holiday Classics

Featuring Camila Meza, Clairdee, & Jamieson
Music & Lyrics by Gloria Muñoz & Mark Feinman

Adrian Cunningham & La Lucha present New Holiday Classics for Arbors Records. Songwriting team Gloria Muñoz and Mark Feinman composed music and lyrics for all ten tracks, that range in style from jazz to pop, to a danceable vallenato, and to upbeat R&B. A diverse cast of musicians came “together” to safely record this music in studios across continents. Muñoz writes in the liner notes, “We listen to the same holiday songs year after year after year. But this year is different because we are different. 2020 changed the world in unimaginable ways.” New Holiday Classics presents fresh new songs to help listeners celebrate this holiday season all year long. While it’s not a typical holiday album, it’s sure to become a favorite and an instant classic.

Backed by the trio La Lucha of chart-topping Everybody Wants To Rule The World, the album features guest singers Camila Meza, Clairdee, and Jamieson. Cunningham sings on six songs, including the two straight-ahead jazz tracks; the warm weathered, “Florida Holiday” and Grinch-like swinger, “It’s So Good To Be Bad.” In addition, he triples on tenor saxophone, clarinet, and flute throughout the album, including the funny and upbeat baroque-pop infused “Dapper Winter’s Best.” “Christmas Morning” brings that familiar holiday magic wrapped in a modern perspective.

Soulful singer Jamieson is the album's first guest on “Starlight,” a power ballad focused on how to approach the holidays after loss. The song also welcomes a lush string quartet. Jamieson also turns up the funk in a danceable R&B song, “No Time of Year Like Christmas.”

"Nochebuena" features Chilean singer and guitarist Camila Meza, along with a full cast, including percussion and strings on this Vallenato Cha-cha. San Francisco based vocalist Clairdee is backed by strings on the hope-filled ballad “New Year’s Day," arranged by NEA Jazz Master, Dick Hyman. Adrian & La Lucha closes out the album with "Snowfall," a timely song about unity and change.

Composers Muñoz & Feinman said about the album, “With New Holiday Classics, we set out to write and record all new original holiday music for people making an effort to reconnect with their joy this holiday season. It won’t be easy, but we know that music always helps.”
